What The Media Gets Wrong About Donald Trump And His Voters | Morning Joe | MSNBC

JOININGS NOW, MSNBC ANCHOR AND
POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT STEVE KORNACKI.
>>STRANGE THINGS CAN OBVIOUSLY HAPPEN IN THESE SPECIAL
ELECTIONS. >>IS A STRANGE THING HAPPENING?
>>SCOTT BROWN GOT ELECTED IN 2009 AFTER THE OBAMACARE BATTLE.
KANSAS, THOUGH, IS THERE ANY WAY THIS GUY’S GOING TO LOSE?
>>IT’S REALLY HARD TO SEE BECAUSE WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE
PRESIDENTIAL VOTE IN THIS DISTRICT, THIS IS A DISTRICT
DONALD TRUMP ACTUALLY DID A LITTLE BETTER THAN MITT ROMNEY
DID FOUR YEARS AGO AND ROMNEY WON IT BIG.
27 POINTS. IT WAS 60-33.
I THINK TO THE EXTENT HAVE YOU SOME REPUBLICANS WHO ARE WAS IN
HERE IS YOU HAVE TO LOOK A LITTLE DEEPER.
IT’S THE STATE ISSUES AND IT’S SAM BROWNBACK, THE GOVERNOR.
A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON ELECTION DAY LAST NOVEMBER.
IT WAS A TRUMP STATE ALMOST TWO TO WIN OVER HILLARY CLINTON.
IT WAS A MASSACRE AT THE PRESIDENTIAL LEVEL.
DEMOCRATS GAINED SEATS IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE IN KANSAS ON
THAT SAME ELECTION DAY. THAT INCLUDED A DISTRICT, A
STATE SENATE DISTRICT IN THIS CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT.
THERE’S A BIG — THERE’S EFFECTIVELY THREE PARTIES IN
KANSAS RIGHT NOW. THERE’S A BROWNBACK REPUBLICAN
PARTY, AN ANTI-BROWNBACK REPUBLICAN PARTY AND A
DEMOCRATIC PARTY. THE FEAR OF REPUBLICANS IS THAT
TWO OF THOSE MAY BE IN A RACE LIKE THIS, IN A LOW INTEREST
RACE, MAYBE THEY UNITE TO BRING BROWNBACK A MESSAGE.
THE CHANCES OF THIS BEING CLOSE IS NOT THAT GOOD.
>>WHAT ABOUT GEORGE? >>IT’S MORE INTERESTING.
IF YOU LOOK ALTHOUGH REPUBLICANS, THE TRIGTAL
REPUBLICAN VOTERS WHO TRUMP STRUGGLED WITH IN NOVEMBER AND
WHO DEMOCRATS ARE COUNTING ON IN
’18, WHITE COLLEGE EDUCATED, WHITE-COLLAR SUBURBANITE.
THAT’S THIS DISTRICT IN GEORGIA NEXT WEEK.
THIS IS A DISTRICT MITT ROMNEY CARRIED BY MORE THAN 20
POINTS — >>DID TRUMP WIN THIS BY —
>>BY ONE. >>WENT FROM 23 FOR ROMNEY TO 1
POINT FOR TRUMP. IT’S BECAUSE OF THE BIG SWING
AMONG COLLEGE EDUCATED WHITES. THEY SAY WE NEED TWO DOZEN
SEATS, DEMOCRATS SAY, TO FLIP THE HOUSE.
THERE ARE TWO DOZEN SEATS LIKE THIS ONE IN GEORGIA.
IF THEY CAN WIN THIS ONE IN GEORGIA, THEY SAY, THAT’S A
SIGNAL THEY COULD HAVE THE NUMBERS IN 2018.
>>FAIR TO SAY GEORGIA ON A NATIONAL LEVEL IS REALLY THE ONE
TO LOOK AT OPPOSED TO KANSAS, WHICH IS PROBABLY MORE ABOUT THE
GOVERNOR THERE? >>I THINK — IF WE GOT FUNNY
RESULTS OUT OF KANSAS IT’S A HUGE NATIONAL STORY.
I THINK MORE THAN LIKELY THE TRADITIONAL PARTISAN FORM WILL
REASSERT ITSELF. DEMOCRATS — THINK OF THE LAST
WEEK OR TWO IN THE NOVEMBER, IN THE FALL CAMPAIGN.
DEMOCRATS WERE SEEING NUMBERS IN STATES THEY NEVER THOUGHT THEY’D
SEE, SAYING HILLARY CLINTON COULD WIN A GEORGIA AND THEN A
BIG REALITY CHECK ON ELECTION DAY.
THAT COULD HAPPEN IN GEORGE, TOO.
>>IN KANSAS, A STATEWIDE ISSUE AND ALSO A NATIONAL ISSUE, DID
MEDICARE, THE GOVERNOR’S, YOU KNOW, REFUSING TO TAKE IT HAVE
AN IMPACT? >>YEAH.
LOOK, THERE’S THE MEDICAID ISSUE IN KANSAS AND ALSO THE BIG STORY
HAS BEEN SCHOOL FUNDING AND TAX CUTS.
BROWNBACK HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY ADAMANT STICKING TO THIS TAX CUT
PACKAGE THAT HAS DECIMATED SCHOOL FUNDING ACROSS THE STATE.
HAVE YOU REPUBLICANS FROM PARTS OF THAT STATE SAYING WE NEED TO
BE A LITTLE LESS RIGID ON THE TAX SIDE FOR THE SAKE OF SCHOOL
FUNDING. THAT’S BEEN A BIG OPENING,
ANTI-BROWNBACK. ESTES IS ASSOCIATED WITH SAM
BROWNBACK, THE GOVERNOR, STATE TREASURER, FACE OF THE
REPUBLICAN PARTY. THAT’S SORT OF THE FEAR THERE.
>>”SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE” OPENING SKETCH WAS ABOUT DONALD TRUMP
AND HIS SUPPORTERS IN UNION, KENTUCKY.
PEOPLE THINK MAYBE THEY WERE BEING MADE FUN OF, MAYBE IT’S
ACTUALLY THE LIBERALS SHOWING JUST HOW CLUELESS THEY ARE.
TAKE A LOOK. >>I WORK IN UNION BUT MY WIFE
WON’T MOVE BECAUSE SHE’S IN A FEDERALLY SPONSORED DRUG REHAB
PROGRAM THAT’S AN HOUR A WAY. >>TERRIBLE.
MY WIFE DOESN’T WANT TO MOVE EITHER.
>>BUT LIKE I WAS SAYING, MY WIFE STAYS BECAUSE OF THE
FEDERAL REHAB PROGRAM. >>WELL, DON’T WORRY ABOUT THAT,
OKAY, BECAUSE WE’RE GOING TO GET RID OF IT.
>>YOU’RE — YOU’RE GETTING RID OF IT?
>>YES, JUNKING IT. JUNKED.
NOW SHE CAN LIVE WHEREVER SHE WANTS TO.
DID I MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER NOW? >>I’M NOT SURE.
BUT I VOTED FOR YOU AND YOU’RE MY PRESIDENT.
>>I WORK TWO JOBS FOR MINIMUM WAGE.
>>MINIMUM WAGE GONE, GONE. >>OKAY.
PERFECT. WE CAN’T AFFORD A NEW HOUSE
BECAUSE MY MORTGAGE IS UNDER WATER.
>>WE’RE GETTING RID OF IT. >>MY MORTGAGE?
>>NO, YOUR HOUSE, JUNKED. >>OKAY.
AND WE CAN’T EVEN DRINK OUR OWN WATER BECAUSE THERE’S LEAD IN
THAT. >>NO, WE’RE GOING TO KEEP THAT,
THOUGH. YOU STILL LOVE TRUMP.
WE STILL LOVE TRUMP? >>YOU’RE MY PRESIDENT.
>>GUYS, YOU’RE BLOWING MY MIND. KEEP EATING THAT FINGER CHILI.
I HEAR MY HELICOPTER. REMEMBER, I’M ONE OF YOU.
>>I DON’T KNOW. >>THERE’S A LOT OF CRITICISM
ONLINE ABOUT THAT SKETCH. TWEETED SNL COLD OPEN IS WHAT
THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY THINKS OF RED AMERICA, WHICH IS WHY IT
WENT RED. >>I THINK THERE’S SOMETHING TO
THAT. THERE’S A NARRATIVE YOU ALMOST
SEE SORT OF IN THE SORT OF CULTURAL PROGRAMMING THAT COMES
OUT OF BLUE AMERICA THAT HAS BEEN WAITING FOR THE IDEA THAT
THESE TRUMP VOTERS ARE GOING TO REALIZE THEY WERE DUPED.
YOU SEE THATHAT SORT OF — THAT THEME IS HEAVY IN A LOT OF
COVERAGE I’VE SEEN — >>THAT SKETCH IS MAKING IT LOOK
LIKE THEY’RE TOO DUMB TO BE DUPED.
>>THAT SEEMS TO BE THE MESSAGE. THEY’RE SLOWLY GOING TO FIND OUT
THEY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS BEST FOR THEM.
>>BUT IT GOES BACK TO THE ARROGANCE OF A BOOK, WHAT’S THE
MATTER WITH KANSAS? >>WELL, CAN IS JUST FINE
WITHOUT YOU, MANHATTAN. KANSAS CAN MAKE ITS DECISIONS
WITHOUT YOU. LOOK — I MEAN, THERE ARE ENOUGH
PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN CITIES IN ELITE CENTERS THAT HAVE ENOUGH
OF THEIR OWN PROBLEMS. THIS ARROGANCE — AGAIN, IT IS
WHY — >>PART OF IT IS ARROGANCE.
>>THERE IS SOME TRUTH TO — >>THEY HAVE A TERRIFIC BATTING
AVERAGE, MORE HITS THAN MISSES. BUT A SKETCH LIKE THAT REALLY
SHOWS HOW SOME PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY IN MANHATTAN, LOOK AT
SOME PARTS OF THE WORLD, INCLUDING PLACES LIKE STATEN
ISLAND, THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE —
>>IT’S LIKE THE PEPSI AD. >>LET’S GO VISIT STATEN ISLAND.
LET’S DROP IN ON PADUCAH, KENTUCKY, AND SEE HOW NATIVES
FEEL ABOUT AMERICA. >>AND TAKE SOME SAMPLES WHILE
WE’RE THERE. >>YEAH.
>>THE BIG IS PROBLEM IS THIS ELITISM DOESN’T END UP HURTING
THE CONSERVATIVES. IT ENDS UP HURTING THE VERY
PEOPLE THAT THEY — THAT ARE MOCKING THEM AND I’M NOT TALKING
ABOUT JUST THIS ONE “SNL” SKETCH, I’M TALKING ABOUT
WHETHER IT’S ACADEMIA OR POPULAR CULTURE BECAUSE THEY’RE THE ONES
THAT WAKE UP THE DAY AFTER GEORGE W. BUSH IS RE-ELECTED IN
2004 WALKING AROUND LIKE ZOM BUSINESS SHOCKED OR SHOCKED
DONALD TRUMP CAN WIN. I DON’T MEAN TO KEEP REPEATING
THIS, BUT THERE WERE CERTAIN PEOPLE THAT GOT ABSOLUTELY
SECURED FOR EVEN SUGGESTING DONALD TRUMP COULD WIN.
THEY WERE SO CLOSE-MINDED ABOUT EVERYTHING, THEY WOULD NOT EVEN
CONSIDER THE ALTERNATIVE THAT DONALD TRUMP COULD WIN.
>>I THINK THAT ONE OF THE THEMES OF THE CAMPAIGN WAS A
CULTURE CONDESCENSION. I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT POLICY,
I’M TALKING ABOUT THE WAY THEY LIVE THEIR LIVES, RELIGION OR
GUNS OR MOVIES THEY WATCH. I THINK THAT’S CONTINUED AND
PROBABLY ONLY GOTTEN WORSE SINCE HIS ELECTION AS MANY PEOPLE IN
COMEDY SEE THEMSELVES AS PART OF THE RESISTANCE IN SOME WAY.
AND THERE’S PROBABLY A RE-ELECTION OF THAT IN THAT
SKETCH. LATER IN THE SHOW THEY DID A
TAPED PIECE WITH LOUIS C.K. WHERE THEY MOCKED THE
COUCH-SITTING SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIORS.
I ACTUALLY DO THINK IN MANY WAYS “SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE” HAS TRIED
TO MAKE FUN OF THE THINGS THAT NEED TO BE MADE FUN OF.
DO YOU BELIEVE THEY’RE PART OF BLACK LIVES MATTER BECAUSE THEY
LIKE THE FACEBOOK STORY? >>I WAS ABOUT TO SAY, AND WE
WERE SAYING AT THE SAME TIME, AFTER THE ELECTION THE BROOKLYN
BUBBLE SCRIPT. OF COURSE, THERE WON’T BE ANY
POLICE OFFICERS OR FIREFIGHTERS THERE BECAUSE THEY DON’T LIVE
INSIDE THE BUBBLE. >>YOU TOUCHED ON, I THINK, AN
IMPORTANT ISSUE IN TERMS OF COMMUNICATION.
WHAT WE SAY, HOW WE SAY IT, WHEN WE SAY IT.
IT AND REVOLVES AROUND THE REACTION OF THE PAST THREE, FOUR
DAYS, THE MEDIA REACTION TOWARD PEOPLE WHO SENATE ONE WAY OR
ANOTHER THAT THE MISSILE SHOTS, THE 59 CRUISE MISSILES, WAS A
GOOD THING. FINALLY A PRESIDENT OF THE
UNITED STATES STOOD UP. IF YOU SAY ANYTHING AT ALL THAT
IS DEFINED BY SOME ELEMENTS OF THE MEDIA AS SORT OF NORMALIZING
DONALD TRUMP AS PRESIDENT, YOU GET CRUSHED.
>>THAT’S THE STUPIDITY OF — THAT’S ONE OF THE DUMBEST THINGS
THAT HAS HAPPENED SINCE THE ELECTION.
PEOPLE ARE SAYING, WELL, YOU KNOW, YOU’RE NORMALIZING DONALD
TRUMP BY SAYING HIS GENERALS PUT TOGETHER A PRETTY GOOD PLAN,
WHICH, BY THE WAY — >>THOSE GENERALS ARE —
>>TOM FRIEDMAN, DAVID IGNATIUS, JOHN KERRY, JUSTIN TRUDEAU —
>>HILLARY CLINTON. >>HILLARY CLINTON, MOST OF THE
FREE WORLD, I’VE GOT REALLY BAD NEWS FOR PART-TIME THAT USE THIS
NORMALIZATION TEST. STEVE, DONALD TRUMP IS
NORMALIZED WHEN HE GOT 306 ELECTORAL VOTES.
HE DIDN’T BECOME PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES THURSDAY
NIGHT. HE BECAME PRESIDENT OF THE
UNITED STATES JANUARY 20, 2017, WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT.
AND WE SOUND STUPID, MORE DUMB THAN USUAL WHEN WE’RE ON TV
GOING, TONIGHT DONALD TRUMP BECAME PRESIDENT.
NO, NO, HE BECAME PRESIDENT WHEN HE HELD HIS HAND UP ON JANUARY
20th. WE LOOK CLUELESS.
IT IS NOT UP TO US DECIDE WHEN HE BECAME PRESIDENT.
THAT DECISION WAS MADE ON NOVEMBER 8th.
>>I HAVE TO SAY — I THINK ON NOVEMBER 8th, DAY AFTER THE
ELECTION, THERE WAS SO MUCH TALK, I THINK, IN THE MEDIA,
PEOPLE WHO WERE SURPRISED BY THE OUTCOME.
AND I WAS CERTAINLY SURPRISED BY THE OUTCOME, I THINK, LIKE MOST
PEOPLE WERE, BUT THAT THIS WOULD CHANGE THE WAY THE MEDIA THOUGHT
ABOUT THE COUNTRY A LITTLE BIT. MIGHT BROADEN THE LENS OF THE
MEDIA. I FELT IN MY CASE, IT HAS.
ONE OF THE THINGS I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT A LOT SINCE THE
ELECTION, THIS WORD BUBBLE, THE IDEA OF BUBBLES.
I THINK THERE’S ALMOST LIKE
CARICATURE, CLICHE NOTION. THERE’S A LOT OF DIFFERENT
BUBBLES IN THE COUNTRY. SOCIAL MEDIA IN SOME WAY IS
LIVING IN SOME KIND OF BUBBLE. WHAT’S MISSING IS AN
APPRECIATION THAT, YOU KNOW, IT MAY NOT MAKE ANY SENSE IN
YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, IN THE CULTURE, VALUES, PRIORITY, THE
CONVERSATION OF LIFE THAT TAKES PLACE ON THE UPPER WEST SIDE OF
MANHATTAN, IT WORKS THERE. BUT IT MAY NOT MAKE ANY SENSE ON
THE UPPER WEST SIDE OF MANHATTAN, THE CULTURE, THE
CONVERSATION, THE VALUES OF YOUNGSTOWN, BUT IT WORKS THERE.
AN APPRECIATION IT CAN — DIFFERENT THINGS CAN WORK IN
DIFFERENT PLACES. >>THERE ARE BLIND SPOTS.
“THE NEW YORK TIMES” EDITOR HAS TALKED ABOUT HOW THEY HAVE A
BLIND SPOT ABOUT RELIGIOUS FAITH.
THEN ON PALM SUNDAY WEEKEND, THEY RUN AN OP-ED OF SOMEONE
BASICALLY COMPARING EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS IN THE SOUTH TO

RUNNING THIS OP-ED PALM SUNDAY WEEKEND BECAUSE YOU DON’T
UNDERSTAND WHY SOUTHERN EVANGELICALS MAY NOT HAVE WAN

100 thoughts on “What The Media Gets Wrong About Donald Trump And His Voters | Morning Joe | MSNBC”

  • Not long ago the press said the very ppl who supported Trump will be hit hardest by Trump policy…then SNL does a skit about it, then all the sudden the media is arrogant (but not Morning Joe)- fu Morning Joe…you're part of the problem in the media of not forcing these repubs to actually answer the questions without deflecting and spinning

  • As a resident of Kentucky, that skit fully depicts how I perceive Trumpers… And I'm surrounded by them. I can literally identify them as I'm walking down the street.

  • Pres. bone-spurs entire campaign and administration are just one huge contrived SHITSHOW soap opera reality show specifically designed to get free publicity for all his family's companies. NONE of them have divested. They are making money hand over fist! Trump said even bad publicity is publicity. The more drama the better.

  • The SNL skit was a little stark, but I think that was the entire point. It's not liberal "arrogance." It's the harsh reality that working-class, conservatives are going to be hurt the most by the man they helped into office. Sorry, but you can't expect a billionaire to relate to the needs of working class citizens. Trump speaks big-business! That's all he knows! Hate to to break it to you, but he doesn't care about mining jobs, after-school programs, rebuilding rural USA, and he's proven that in a matter of weeks! Anybody with a mouth can stand in front of a crowd and make promises, but that doesn't mean he or she has to stand by those commitments. It's called "campaigning." Trump identified the needs and wants of rural, working class Americans and took advantage of them.

  • "What's the Matter with Kansas" author is harshly critical of the Liberal Elites, in his most recent book, "Listen Liberal". Ignorant example.

  • Robert Cantsay says:

I live in a very RED state, and MOST Trump supporters are simple-minded beer and whiskey guzzling malcontents, in jacked-up 4X4s with NRA stickers on the bumper. Yeah Donald Trump tells lots of people off, and that's what they want. Just some loud mouth, who's vulgar and bombastic –the more vulgar and bombastic the better.
Donald Trump rallied them–just like he said, he could shot somebody and he wouldn't lose a vote–this is the RED State I live in.
The key to winning here is anger and guns. If you have both, you're a shoe-in to win. Tax cuts and loves Jesus helps too. Wallah, Donald Trump has em ohh'ng and ahh'ng at his rants and Twitter tweets, the more outrageous the better.

  • It's annoying that all of these panelists are clutching their pearls in surprise. Look, if you voted for Trump because he was gonna "drain the swamp" or "build the wall" or "lock her up" or "ban the Muslims" then you deserve to have people point out the absurdity of it all. Oh, it hurt your feelings? Well, welcome to the rest of us.

  • I hate that they act like people in New York aren't people. One minute we are too PC next..we are hurting their feelings

  • Drazenka Svedruzic says:

So, if I like this SNL clip I'm "out of touch liberal elite, who doesn't get American people"? Isn't it condensending to call people condensending? In this "cultural war" media is talking about, liberals are bad guys? Maybe this is why democrats lost.

  • Vince Fernandez says:

That arrogant guy with no tie doesn't get the point of the SNL skit. The point was that trump supporters still back him even AFTER finding out they were duped.

  • Samantha Bee and the Daily Show and other shows have interviewed real Trump supporters. And those Trump supporters are way stupider than the SNL skit. The SNL skit was attempting to gently nudge those folks to wake up. And your show is also helping to wake these people up. Sure, they were being mocked by SNL- but it wasn't severe mocking. It was gentle mocking. At this point, after all the stupidity and corruption coming from the White House, some gentle mocking might help them to wake up to reality. Trump is a treasonous traitor con-man, a snake-oil salesman. When the die-hard Trump supporters do wake up, they will want Trump tarred and feathered. When they do turn on him it will be drastic – because they will be very angry.

  • Trump supporters may not be dumb per se, but the overwhelming majority of them are pretty ignorant. They don't know anything about politics outside of Trump's twitter feed. They cling to their Bibles and their guns… the vast majority don't trust mainstream media anymore so they frequent terrible alt-right conspiracy propaganda websites… even FOX News I'd consider more a propaganda station than a news organization. Republicans are ignorant and uninformed, and vote against their best interests all the time. Many are single-issue voters and vote for whoever has the strongest stance against abortion…

  • Drazenka Svedruzic says:

If you are poor, you deserve it. I'm taking your healthcare, job training, scool lunches….You'll still vote for me, right? Because this other guys are "out of touch liberal elite".

  • Wow, its pretty obvious that the dems comments here are those who still think MSNBC does truthful reporting. All the while the rest of the WORLD knows that MSNBC is nothing more than FAKE NEWS from an organization along with the rest of mainstream media (CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NYT, NYP and others) carried water for Barack Obama, who turns out to be the worst president in US history, who left no legacy behind other than chaos at home, and a middle east on FIRE. A dispicable excuse for an American President who allowed a half million people in Syria to die unnecessarily because of his cowardess. And now that the mainstream media arm of the Democratic Party has lost all credibility, they continue to step into crap, and continue to push false naratives that we the people can see right through. And it is quite funny to see some of these naratives they try to push. The dems and mainstream media have rendered themselves irrelevant because of the childish whining and crying over their HUGE LOSS, then spreading fake news all over the place! As the rest of the US and the world are watching, the dems and media outlets mentioned have become the laughing stock of the planet. FOX NEWS IS ONE OF THE ONLY NEWS SOURCES TO BE TRUSTED. Those fake news outlets mentioned have solidified their demise and only pushes their fake narratives to the SNOWFLAKES. And MSNBC and CNN are the WORST.

  • Why is it so wrong to tell the truth? Even the trump supporters know they act like this, while I have seen many of his supporters turn on him for fake bombing Syria many of them still walk around like they love having bloody cut off fingers in their Chili!

  • I think it's ironic that the group of people who call liberals "snow flakes" are the same ones so offended by SNL skits

  • Morning Joe (Aka conservative panel) Who cares about SNL speaking the truth about trumps base, it's time to get back to news that matters, trump and Russia collusion.

  • Hekat the Evil B-tch says:

The SNL sketch was a slight exaggeration of how some or many Trump supporters will stand behind him no matter what he does… Remember; it is Trump himself who said he could shoot someone in the middle of 5th Avenue and not lose any votes… The behavior of these supporters is material that literally writes itself. Condescension to one person is simple truth to another…

  • Stephanie Emmerich says:

Not from Kentucky, but I'm from Southern IL, which is part of 'Trump Country,' and this is how Trump supporters who are begin screwed over by the Trump administration react. No matter what stupid stunt he pulls in direct contrast of what he said he would do, they still support him, and believe that he is looking out for the 'little man.'

  • Joe, you're wrong.

The SNL sketch accurately depicted Trump voters.

The Washington Post has done at least 3 articles that I've read where Trump voters who know the government programme they rely on is being cut in the Trump budget, yet they say they would still vote for Trump.

One 70yo woman will lose her government job and even said she would probably die in her home because of that, still would vote for Trump.

That kind of insanity is hard for comedy writers to resist.

  • Well the sad truth is that some of them are too dumb to realize they've been duped. They're also ignorant, biased, and party loyal to a fault. When 37% of conservatives aren't aware that Obamacare and the ACA are the EXACT SAME THING, yet they've crusaded for years to repeal it, but now want to keep it because they've been correctly informed, they have a problem.

SNL is over dramatizing things, but I've seen the vids of actual republicans being interviewed by networks, and half of them only know the rhetoric preached to them by their favorite candidate. They can tell you up and down what they hate, but can't go into any real specifics about why they hate it. They just chalk it up to "well Obama did it, so it's bad."

  • He became president by republican politicians not the American people thus he's not the legitimate leader by far

  • Much ado about nothing. The Republicans will win in the Kansas special election. There just not enough democrats in Kansas to make a difference. In Kansas, a bad Republican will still win over a good Democrat. Politics is a team sport.

  • 1) Donald Trump say i am very rich.
    2) Donald Trump doesn't respect women #PussyGrabber
    3) Donald Trump Being Racist
4)Donald Trump fuels diplomatic row with Britain after apology from US officials over GCHQ wiretapping claims

  • You "decimate" school funding to drive public SECULAR schools to close. THEN you use "vouchers" to force parents to send kids to the ONLY schools AVAILABLE: "Jezzus is lord elementary". This is all tied into evangelical hatred of schools that AREN'T FORCING jesus on kids. Fundies have a major "generational replacement gap" and they're going to try and force christianity into young lives however they CAN. Disgusting

  • Re: the SNL skit, sorry but as many articles I have read from Trump country districts, this is exactly what has and is happening. Journalist went to Kentucky to talk to them about the coal industry and jobs. Journalist found out that the people there know very well that coal jobs are not going to come back because the demand is down. They also do not want those jobs back because they are dangerous, bad for health and bad for the environment.
Yet, at the same time, they all voted for Trump, on the premise that he would bring back coal jobs. So either they are smart for knowing coal jobs is a non starter, or they are ignorant for voting for Trump based on him bringing back coal jobs. They cannot be both at the same time. Just saying.
Then, we hear that some Trump voters didn't realize the Obamacare they wanted repealed, was the same thing as the Affordable Care Act, that kept their families alive in the past few years. Really? Come on, this stuff is not made up.

  • How was the act of war firing 59 missiles into a nation state without congressional approval legal?
Are we a country of laws? We the people of the United States.

  • Is it really so unfair to ask Trump supporters why they supported him? Is it so unfair to ask them what they think of putting his family into power when no one elected them?

All of us fear losing our jobs and our benefits. Everywhere our problems and our concerns are so similar. Every small town has the same trouble finding the money for schools, fire protection, police.

If the problems are the same, why is it so unfair, so "unfeeling", so insensitive to try piercing the walls of conflict separating our common understanding of what solutions we have before us?

Our elections are being run on emotions and not on factual, rational considerations. That truth must be faced and factored into the responses of shows like SNL. The mockery is not of the problems exposed but of the disconnect between the problems we all recognize as our common experience and the inexplicable way we are separated in any effective use of a commonly controlled and compliant government that will not answer to the governed when the governed call upon it to do so.

Who is benefiting from that conflict?

If you are not seeing clear improvement in your wellbeing, look to those you put in power and insist they work in your interest or replace them. That activity is what makes an election useful.

    What else can anyone propose?

Endless complaining followed by no discernable specific improvement should equal a firing of the useless to let others try.

The voters are required to actively discern what the elected propose to do, what they actually do and how that changes the voter's life.

Stupid is as stupid does. Put another way, to be best served by a government, one must watch those in it every second, as an active skeptic and broadly informed critic. Doing that is the cost we must pay to live the life we choose instead of the life someone else tells us we must live.

  • Us trump supporters are very loyal! President Trump was right, he can stand in the middle of 5th Ave and shoot someone and not lose a vote! We love PRESIDENT TRUMP! He was sent here by God to heal this land and there is NOTHING he can do to make me wish Hillary was President!!! #MAGA

  • Andrew Foulkes says:

are we all forgetting that the republicans knew they had lost 11 days out from election day then Comey comes out with the Weiner laptop and all of a sudden the Reps are back in the game? trump should never have won but the weight of timed wikileaks and email hacks
turned the tables, trump is not the legitimate president and yet he is

  • Alexander Craig says:

Don't forget to take in to account those polls. You know. Those polls that showed Trump loosing to Clinton. Those polls.

Why do these shows never tire of "polls"? It it because they are just so darn reliable?

  • Random Entertainment says:

Oh hush up Joe. I don't remember you defending Obama the way you rush to apologise for Trump. Yes under the Democratic establishment there was a lot of arrogance especially by the media in favour of Hillary Clinton but SNL's depiction of some of the Trump voters isn't far from the truth.

  • joe's really beginning to show his true colors.. He loves Trump the Russian.  Joe's said a few bad things about him… but, that's the way news media TROLLS work. "Come into my house said the spider to the fly," you'll be very welcome says Joe.

  • Kris RedWarCube says:

yes SNL are showing it dose not mater how much Trump can treat his people like s#it and lie and they STILL eat all his s#it and say it's icecream

  • Trump supporters love telling it like it is unless it's telling them they're stupid. Or anything to do with science. Or religion. Basically anything that hurts their feelings.

  • Debbie's Back Porch says:

It may indeed seem like elitism, but low information voters are the ones who put Trump in office, in all states. I live in the South and I see it everyday.

  • My voting precinct has 3500 Rep. and 470 Dems. Whether you see SNL skit as belittling or demeaning, or not, it's VERY accurate.I guess "participation trophies" are still as popular as ever. Why aren't ignorant people being portrayed as informed? Many of my neighbors view Trump as a good Christian businessman.

  • Richard Ashton says:

Say what you will, but rationale people do not vote knowingly against their own self interest. People that do vote against their own self interest do so blindly; they are not stupid; rather they are ill informed or uninformed. This is ignorance, meaning a lack of reliable information, but it is not stupidity. People are ill informed because they rely on an information source that is unreliable; they take as truth and news the opinions of confirmed ideologically committed sources. If a person's truth is based on the rantings and opinions of a committed ideologue, then that person will be ill informed, not stupid, but rather ill informed. Uninformed are those who receive and seek no information at all, but vote for the party of their daddy and granddaddy, believing that if it was good enough for daddy then it's good enough for them. Uninformed and ill informed voters often vote against their own self interest. The greater question is how do we as a nation insure that voters are reasonably well informed and make voting decisions based on their actual interest and in the interest of the Nation. We are not a nation of stupid people, but we are a nation of a lot of uninformed and ill informed voters.

  • That's when the whole world hates America, when they think that waging war is presidential
and the world shall be happy that it follows its interests relentlessly and name it is for the sake of the world.

Maneuvering yourself into extremely complex conflicts without any clue is real statesmanship.
Having the White House (totally under)staffed with people who have not the slightest idea of foreign affairs makes you fit to save the world
Having military planning that is months old and useing them blindly between the starters and the main course while casually talking to a foreign statesman in the restaurant of your golf resort makes you a great military leader of the utmost ability.

Joe must have been brainwashed in the last days. Let's see whether he recovers or not.

  • Nalton Jannise says:

I wonder if Joe and Mika were equally offended by the "serious" people in their "news" business who relentlessly attacked President Obama and Democrats. Besides, it was Bobby Jindal (R-LA) who said that the Republican party is becoming the "stupid party". And that wasn't part of a comedy skit.

  • Baldwin is always funny as Trump, and it's funny because that's what Trump is like. And the Trump voter's slavish and unreasonable loyalty is right on. It sure got Joe upset…… Trump is a huge moron so he gets satirized a lot.

  • Joe– you are frigging arrogant. And are so arrogant that you have no ability to see, reflect on yourself. Glass houses… remember.

  • Phat Albertina says:

Satire is only funny because it is based on truth. SNL's sketches are funny because they are based on reality. The southern red states are some of the poorest states in the union. Trump's "policy" changes to date have been entirely pro-corporation/pro-wealthy. So why are they still supporting him? Either they really are stupid or just too stubborn to admit they got played. Trump is the worst, and I do mean the absolute worst, president ever elected in the U.S. That isn't just my opinion. That is a quantitatively measurable fact. It's completely logical to question the intelligence, motives and/or sanity of anyone who defends his pro-corporate agenda.

  • The Democratic Party Lost in 2016 for having picked crazy Hillary. She was the reason they lost and she was the worst choice that the Democrats could have made. Crap!

  • i am still a critic of your channel, but your coming around slowly. much more thoughtful than the young turks channel.

  • THESE GUYS ARE MAYBE–JUST MAYBE WAKING UP. WE TRUMP SUPPORTERS ARE MANY AND EDUCATED. OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING HE IS DOING A GREAT JOB AT THIS POINT!!

  • it´s not condescent if it is true. Its fine to make fun off the buble (and it is) but do not make fun of those who vote against their own interest but found the lies and racism relatable.

  • trump voters are delusional and lack all self awareness. That skit and then the response are perfectly representative of these lazy ignorant fools.

  • They call me Mr. Bey says:

Joe, read the comments in this post to get a clue, then take your head out betwixt Trump hind quarters. Trump supporters drank the kool aid and now the reality of their actions are coming home to roost. Trump has never given two shytes about them or their lives. He ran for office to increase his popularity and his wallet; period.

  • Please stop patronizing stupid bigots! I live in Kentucky AMONG these people. They are members of my family. They ARE this stupid. The "elites" don't need to change, the Trump voters need to open their eyes!

  • Tebogo Kefalotse says:

No. Joe you are the one who sounds stupid, you are the one who always goes back and forward on your Trump stance #firejoe

  • Okay. I have to say this Joe. You need to get off of the TV and come to Ohio, Pennsylvania or Michigan where the political and cultural civil war is happening. My family lives in Jim Jordan's 4th district. If Jim Jordan's vision of health care had prevailed, my family would have suffered catastrophically. When I bring this up to my family, who all voted for Jordan, Trump and the state representatives who have been there for years, they blame everything else but the politicians in office. When I ask "what have they done for you lately?" I get some statement about communism, Mexicans taking my job, or abortion. I explain the president doesn't create the budget or funding bills, I get the same responses. They live in a bubble of their own making.

I cheered when SNL did that skit. My family is not doing fine Joe. They are 2 breaths from the bottom. Those of us who are doing okay help as much as we can, but if health care goes down and Trump's budget gets passed, we won't have much left over to help with either. If a representative cares more about their caucus than the people they represent, it's time to go. If the representative is not doing enough to help you, folks need to demand it. You don't have to betray who you are, but why suffer so Jim Jordan can get health care and a comfortable living?
I do not live in a bubble in Manhattan Joe. I live on the front lines. I suspect there are more of us than your supposed Manhattan snowflakes out there. Your argument is getting old.

  • The SNL skit is dead on, and Joe doesn't get it. Trump won because these type of voters didn't see through his obvious (to us) lies, and the absurdity / impossibility of his plans.
The fact that around 40% of the STILL think Trump is doing a good job tells you everything.

  • The people (all of us, as a polity) have to own our shortcomings. Trumps voters were duped, and do indeed seem to be willfully ignorant of it. I'm not perfect, and my vote for Hillary was influenced by BS, too. But the truth is the truth.

  • Honestly, I HATE this "they vote for Trump because the Democrats are soooo mean to them" narrative. If they vote against their own interests because they feel insulted, they are acting like children, this proving the Democrats absolutely right. If the American Voters are too uneducated and stupid to vote, the education system has to be improved.

  • Joe, it's not that "liberal elites in Manhattan" don't get it. It's the Kentucky rubes who don't get it. And since Joe is a fellow Republican who was swept up in that stupid Contract With American nonsense 25 years ago, he doesn't get it either. Joe, it's stupid people like you and your conservative ilk that brought us Trump. Your stupidity brought us to this! That's what you need to get through your thick freaking skull!

    Rachel Maddow is a HACK!

  • I live in TN. I don't think I've heard an informed logical justification for Trump. Yeah liberal elitism is a thing but lets be real here; he rambled like an insane person for over a year. A person couldn't demonstrate that they are more unfit for the job if they tried.

  • Joe seems a little uncomfortable with the SNL sketch. Maybe it because its the closest thing to talent and satire that he has ever seen. It's satire Joe. Need a dictionary? Or does he just need to develop a sense of humour?

Also, very rich indeed to listen to this panel denouncing arrogance. That IS funny.

  • Evangelicals of all faiths are responsible for the mess America is in. Running a country based on cherry picking of religious Judeo Christian myths while paying lip service to freedom of religion of other faiths while threatening the world with nuclear might makes America look as crazy as North Korea.
