UTEP Headlines Newscast 09.25.15

It’s Friday, September 25, 2015. Hello, I’m Elizabeth Ashby. Here’s what
you need to know about what’s happening at the University of Texas at El Paso. ### More students are selecting UTEP as their
University of choice. For the 17th consecutive year, a record number
of students registered for the fall semester. This growth demonstrates UTEP’s continuing
success in providing an accessible and excellent education to the Paso del Norte region. The University registered a total of 23,397
students compared to 23,079 last year, a 1.4% overall increase. UTEP’s positioning as a national doctoral/research
university has been reinforced by its overall 12.8% increase of new graduate students from
Fall 2014 to Fall 2015. ### Several UTEP faculty members were recognized
at Tuesday’s El Paso City Council meeting with the Star on the Mountain Award. These educators recently received the prestigious
UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Awards. Of the 79 winners in the entire UT
System who were recognized at a ceremony in Austin last month, 10 of those were from UTEP. This prestigious recognition is for undergraduate
educators within the system’s 15 academic and health institutions who have demonstrated
extraordinary classroom performance and innovation in instruction. ### Another prestigious recognition was given
to UTEP President Diana Natalicio, She was one of four higher education visionaries who
received the Carnegie Corporation’s 2015 Academic Leadership Award. The Carnegie Corporation says that the recipients
were chosen for demonstrating vision and outstanding commitment to excellence and equity in undergraduate
education. Each honoree’s institution will receive
a grant of $500,000 to be used toward the institution’s notable academic initiatives. ### It’s that time of year again! The UTEP Homecoming festivities kick off Sunday
with the Miner Dash 5K Run/3K Walk and Family Fitness Fiesta. They continue all week until the UTEP Miners
face the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday, October 3. See a full list of activities, including the
lip sync contest, Homecoming pageant, the parade and pep rally, and individual college
