  • "Gun doesn't pull the trigger" AND….. there are no transitional fossils and carbon dating isn't accurate…….. the climate has always been changing…….in god we trust……Seems this type of thinking is relatively prevalent amongst US republicans.

  • The issue I have with deeper background checks and red flags is this:

    Person A: Has some minor, manageable mental health issues and actively seeks help. Gets medication and counseling – is then unjustifiably deemed potentially dangerous, gets red flagged and cannot purchase a firearm.

    Person B: Extremely disturbed, but does not say a word – no red flag and innocent people end up in mortal danger.

    We will need to know the difference. Due process under these circumstances would need to be highly scrutinized for reasonable justification. No room for hard-line judging on this issue.

    Additionally, regarding legislation proposed in the wake of recent mass shootings, most people with mental illness do not experience the extremes of suicidal nor homicidal thoughts, and indeed many types of mental illness that uses those drugs is used for treating mental illnesses not associated with these thoughts. They fall into the mild to moderate depression range, that while medicated, or in many cases unmedicated, poses no threat. To take away your rights merely on the basis of medication is a brutal assault on the individual.
    This proposed legislation may also preclude some people from seeking the very help they need for fear of losing the right to protect themselves and others. Mental illness already has enough stigma already. Additionally, your assumption is that the people on medication are not otherwise functioning while on it is a false premise. The point of the medication is that it allows people to function. This law is punitive on functioning people.

    This is bad legislation.

    To bad our current politicians lack the wisdom of the Founding Fathers.

  • All gun laws outside of the 2nd amendment are unconstitutional on the Federal level. It's a State right and an individual right. One State may have a very large militia and another not. The individual right cannot be infringed at any level.

    We can start by legislating that ammunition has a lower level of gun powder. Bolt action rifles can still use the ammo but rapid fire weapons would jam. Then if you want the high power ammo you will need a special federal licence that is checked daily against state and federal law agencies to see if you have been a bad boy. If you have a restraining order or on the no fly list for example – then you don't get to buy the higher power ammunition and stock pile it. You still have your second amendment rights you just can't buy ammo that will work effectively in a rapid fire weapon.

    Then the law enforcement agencies can intervene before someone has a chance to stock pile ammo as they know who is buying high power ammo and how much of it.

    Your second amendment rights are still intact. The government isn't telling you what guns you can or can not own.
