Trump hails ‘big victory’ in Supreme Court asylum order

GOOD MORNING AT HOME AND TO YOU. THE HIGH COURT REVERSING DECADES OF U.S. POLICY ALLOWING THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION TO DENY ASYLUM TO MIGRANTS WHO PASS THROUGH ANOTHER COUNTRY FIRST ON THEIR WAY TO THE U.S. BORDER WITHOUT FIRST SEEKING PROTECTION IN THAT PREVIOUS COUNTRY. KELLYANNE CONWAY, COUNSEL TO THE PRESIDENT WITH US ON “AMERICA’S NEWSROOM” TWO HOURS AGO SAID THIS.>>HUGE VICTORY, THE SECOND VICTORY THIS SUMMER HANDED BY THE SUPREME COURT FOR THE PRESIDENT’S VISION ON BORDER SECURITY. IF YOU ARE COMING HERE SEEKING TO COME INTO THIS COUNTRY, YOU MUST FIRST SEEK SAFE HAVEN IN THE COUNTRIES THAT YOU PASS THROUGH.>>Bill: HERE IS JOHN ROBERTS BEGINNING HIS DAY FROM THE NORTH LAWN THERE. GOOD MORNING.>>BILL, GOOD MORNING TO YOU. BIG VIEK — VICTORY FOR THE WHITE HOUSE LAST NIGHT. THAT WAS OVERTURNED BY THE NINTH SIR COURT OF APPEALS. THE LAST NIGHT THE SUPREME COURT GAVE THE WHITE HOUSE THE BIG VICTORY TO GO FORWARD IN ALL 50 STATES AT LEAST TEMPORARY. THE PRESIDENT SAID REALLY BIG COURT WINS ON THE BORDER LATELY. FOR THE MOMENT THE U.S. GOVERNMENT CAN DENY ASYLUM CLAIMS FROM MANY PEOPLE WHO TRAVEL THROUGH A THIRD COUNTRY BEFORE REACHING THE UNITED STATES BORDER. IT WILL AFFECT CENTRAL AMERICAN MIGRANTS WHO TRAVEL THROUGH MEXICO. IT WILL FORCE CENTRAL AMERICANS TO APPLY FOR ASYLUM IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES AND A SAFE THIRD AGREEMENT WITH MEXICO WHICH WOULD ALLOW MIGRANTS TO APPLY FOR ASYLUM IN MEXICO. THE ACTING CUSTOMS AND BORDER PATROL COMMISSIONER SAYING THERE ARE STILL POTENTIAL LEGAL HURDLES AHEAD BUT HE IS ENCOURAGED BY THE SCOTUS DECISION.>>THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER. WE’RE STILL GOING THROUGH HEARINGS ON THE MERITS OF THIS CASE RIGHT NOW. RIGHT NOW WHAT THAT MEANS WHILE THAT IS GOING ON WE CAN FULLY IMPLEMENT THIS RULE ALONG THE ENTIRE SOUTHWEST BORDER AND HIT THIS CRISIS.>>THE SUPREME COURT RULED 7-2 TO ALLOW THE POLICY TO GO FORWARD WHILE THE CASE IS DECIDED ON THE MERITS. TWO DISSENTING JUSTICES GINSBERG AND SOTOMAYOR, EVEN THOUGH OTHERS SIDED WITH THE MAJORITY, DEMOCRATS NOT HAPPY AT ALL WITH WHAT THE JUSTICES DECIDED.>>PEOPLE COVERED BY THIS RULE BARRED FROM SEEKING ASYLUM HERE ARE SIMILARLY SEEKING TO ESCAPE PERSECUTION, VIOLENCE, CONDONED BY THE GOVERNMENTS IN THEIR COUNTRIES, DRUG TRAFFICKING AND THREATS AND THIS KIND OF RULE CONTRAVENES THE SPIRIT, IF NOT THE LETTER OF THIS LAW. AND THE INTENT OF CONGRESS.>>AS THE WHITE HOUSE CELEBRATES VICTORY AT THE SUPREME COURT THE PRESIDENT LOOKS FOR A NEW NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR. MIKE POMPEO HAVING LUNCH WITH THE PRESIDENT TODAY TO DISCUSS IT. SOME TALK ABOUT HE COULD TAKE THE JOB AS KISSINGER DID. MULTIPLE SOURCES ARE WAVING ME OFF THAT POSSIBILITY FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. POMPEO MAY EXIT TO RUN FOR SENATE NEXT YEAR. YOU WOULD LOSE NOT JUST YOUR SECRETARY OF STATE BUT NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR BUT CONCERN GIVING POMPEO BOTH JOBS WOULD CONCENTRATE A LOT OF POWER UNDER HIM. NON-POMPEO CHOICES THE TOP CONTENDERS ARE STEVEN BEGAN, THOUGH HE MAY BE TAKING A DIFFERENT JOB. RICK LIDEL, THE FORMER NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR. ROBERT O’BRIEN AND BRIAN HOOK. WE ARE TOLD THE WHITE HOUSE IS LOOKING FOR A LOW-KEY NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR UNLIKE BOLTON. SOMEBODY MORE IN THE MOLD OF STEVEN HADLEY DURING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION, WILL THE NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR BE MORE OF A LIAISON BETWEEN THE COUNSEL AND THE PRESIDENT?
