you've almost religiously avoided stating or even implying a political allegiance is that because as a news anchor you feel the integrity of your broadcast would be compromised that sounds like a good answer I'll take it there was a short piece on Vanity Fair's website by Marshall Westbrook you probably saw it where he calls you the Jay Leno of news anchors you're popular because you don't bother states in the world like 180 of them have freedom all right and got you a sorority girl just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth one day there's some things you should know and one of them is there is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that were the greatest country in the world were 7th and literacy 27th and math 22nd in science 49th and life expectancy 178th in sacrificed we cared about our neighbors we put our money where our mouths were and we never beat our chest we built great big things made ungodly technological advances explored the universe cured diseases we cultivated the world's greatest artists and the world's greatest economy we reached for the stars acted like men we aspired to intelligence we didn't belittle it it didn't make us feel inferior we didn't identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election and we didn't scare so easy we were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed by great men men who were revered first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one America is not the greatest country in the world anymore enough

When fiction contains more reality and we live in an era where reality contains more fiction.

    >insert tragic sigh<

  • Such a stupid fucking show, with such incredibly thick and re-worked environments to make Sorkin sound even more of a pretentious waste of space, that's the only incredible part of it. A scene with Fix You playing on the background to report the news… garbage. Glad it got cancelled and finally Sorkin exposed for the massive wet wipe he is.

  • This is one of the single most powerful, moving and emotionally impactful speeches I’ve ever listened to. How amazing would it be, then, if it wasn’t a load of bullshit?

  • When I came to the US as a foreign exchange student in 2007, I was told again and again that America was the best. I thought that was really strange seeing as NOBODY I talked to even knew where my country was. I was asked silly questions like "Do you know what the internet is?" I left a country where everyone used Wifi and was placed in a town where people were still using modems, and they treated me like I came out of an amish community. I was told that America got new things (cars, phones, etc) and we got what they didn't use anymore… again, I was told this by people who couldn't even point at Europe on the map. I find it striking that these people could be so sure they were better than anyone else when they didn't even know what else was out there.

  • Jeff Daniels about this scene, Aaron Sorkin and Sam Waterston who drove more than an hour to see it and "to see if I have a job or not." =>

  • Pusher Love Man says:

Last week I saw Jeff Daniels in the Broadway production of To Kill A Mockingbird that Aaron Sorkin adapted. I got to meet him afterwards, and asked him, “What makes America the greatest country in the world?”

He responded: “That’s a long monologue I’d have to re-memorize.”

Best possible answer he could’ve given, IMO!

  • Can we imagine how awesome this show would be if it was still on air today, with that is currently on the news! I mean…!

  • Greatest country??USA? It never was the greatest country. No country ever was.
There were great empires like the Roman empire, British empire etc, but there has never been a "greatest country" in history.

  • Cristian Zubieta says:

I actually want him to pin point the exact moment which the USA was everything he said. I'm not American so I don't know much about its history but I'm not sure it existed.
