The Gospel Is Good News: R.C. Sproul through the Years

Right now as as I talk to you I’m in a television, a
broadcast television studio. I think one of the most important things we
do is to try it to deepen our understanding of the character of God. I think we will discover very soon through
our study of Scripture that God is holy. He’s righteous. He’s just. And we’re not. Only Christ has made an atonement, and that’s
what we need. The only way sinners can get past the gates
of heaven is by wearing the robes of somebody else’s righteousness. This powerful call of God that works what
it intends to work goes back to the very act of creation. Anything that happens in this world cannot
happen apart from divine sovereignty. If God is not sovereign, God is not God. It matters profoundly what it is that you
believe. The thing I want to get across to you is this:
that unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. I want to keep it simple; the gospel is so
plain in Scripture that a child can understand it. To be a Christian is to be forgiven. The essence of the Christian faith is grace. The essence of the Christian ethic is not
arrogance but gratitude. When I put my trust in Him, He imputes or
counts to me His righteousness, and on the basis of that imputed righteousness, God declares
me just right now. So if I die right now, I go to heaven right
now because I have all the righteousness I will ever need to get there—namely the righteousness
of Jesus Christ. That’s good news because it’s the gospel.

  • The greatest legacy that any of us can hope to achieve, is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. The Legacy of Dr. R. C. Sproul has been to unashamedly declare the glory of God to a humanity that naturally flees from His holiness. Although we wrestle with the immediate loss of one of our generations greatest ministers of the Gospel, we know that it is better to be with Christ. Our prayers are for Vesta, R.C. Jr. and the rest of the Sproul family in the immediate loss of a husband, father, and friend. May the sweet memory of a life well lived give you comfort. For the rest of us may we continue to be strengthened and emboldened by the wonderful truth of the Gospel that our faithful departed minister of the Gospel has so faithfully proclaimed.

    Soli Deo Gloria.

  • Sarah Gebremicael says:

"The heart and courage of Martin Luther and also the theological precision and passion of John Calvin. He was a bright and burning light". #GodUsedRC. He taught, defended, and proclaimed the beauty and the truthfulness of the Gospel and the whole Scripture profoundly with boldness and clarity, I am grieving and will miss him immensely.

  • So sad today at the loss of Brother Sproul, not mourning as one with no hope, but just sad that this world has lost such a powerful voice for the Gospel. Thank you RC for teaching me over these years the true nature of God as witnessed by the Holy Spirit through the Word…you will be missed, but until we meet again, I pray that the legacy God has built through you for believers across the globe will inspire, illuminate, and challenge us forward as we await His return.

  • What a privilege to be able to use R.C. Sproul's teaching materials in jail Bible studies. What joy in seeing lives transformed by the Lord Jesus Christ, whose words and concepts were so effectively illuminated by Dr. Sproul, in ways that made him a mentor to so many others through his ministry.

  • Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

  • A great Reformed Theologian who instilled in many a love for the sovereignty and holiness of God and the doctrines of grace. Lamentably truths we hear so little of these days.

  • "If God is not sovereign, then God is not God" – beautiful words.
It's amazing how my heart hurts for someone I never met. Thank you for your service Dr. Sproul.

  • God blessed his Church with this wonderful saint of God, R.C. His book Chosen by God and his many other titles cemented my faith in the Reformed truths found in the Sacred Scriptures. R.C. was instrumental in bringing my sons and wife in a Reformed understanding of the Faith. My life and the life of my family was touched and blessed and forever changed because #GodUsedRC

  • Starting at 1:33 he states "When I put my trust in Him, He imputes or counts to me His righteousness, and on the basis of that imputed righteousness, God declares me just right now."

Compare that to what Jesus told His disciples to preach:
"Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem" (Jesus, in Luke 24:45-47).

In fact, Jesus gave us a warning: "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5). Is anyone sensing there's a problem here? Putting your "trust in Him" is not the same as repenting.

We can have mercy, including redemption from the death penalty earned for past sins, IF we'll confess and forsake sin:
"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13).

Jesus made a payment of our death penalty available for us. We can now have redemption from our death penalty for past sins if we'll come to God in repentance, turning from sin that earned us the death penalty in the first place.

Without repentance, we remain unredeemed from our death penalty for past sins and will surely perish in death (Romans 6:23) for those sins. Jesus' warning, "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" makes perfect sense. "Faith alone" is a deception!

"And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30). Jesus is ". . . the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him" (Hebrews 5:9). There's nothing in that verse about "faith alone." If we'll obey and come to God in repentance, we'll have redemption and we'll have Jesus' righteousness imputed to us . . . as long as we abide in Him, continuing in repentance. "Faith alone" or "just trust" conveniently bypasses the need for repentance, in spite of God's command and Jesus' warning that we must repent!

I think that RC Sproul has been the most influential Christian in the Reformed faith since the Westminster assembly first drafted the Westminster Standards. He has definitely been the most influential contemporary theologian in my family's understanding of what reformed teaching is. May God raise up another man like RC Sproul to continue preaching in full strength and with similar zeal the truth and essence of reformed theology. I'm glad that Ligonier ministries is prepared to continue without their dear and faithful leader, and I also realize the difficult standard by which they must measure up to in his absence. God bless the Sproul family. I could not end this note without also giving gratitude for RC's optimistic eschatological teachings, as I am a Postmillennialist, and my father taught me much of what I know about the Olivet Discourse from RC Sproul's sermons on it.

  • clean.clear.comprehensible. There is no excuse for not receiving Christ; even a child can understand! Thanks, RD Sproull. Rejoice in His presence!

  • So being Born again, made new? Does that mean we stop sinning? Or just a wink at sin? Being made new, means NEW… the old man is dead… You are not made new and continue to live in sin, that is a lie – to continue to sin isn't new, that is the same… This guy is missing something…

  • Naomi Talking Money says:

So incredibly grateful for his life! His study on the Holiness of God truly changed my life in college and I meditate on Isaiah 6 often to this day. Thanks be to God for his life!

  • My public channel says:

The good news is that this this man has for first time since he died the last time been introduced to reality (again) and has realized that everything he believed in and talked about endlessly on earth is false and never existed. Christianity is 100% false. It wasn't designed nor intended as literal truth. It's a collection of myth stories which spoke to the consciousness of the time – people of no education who relied on myth. People who thought the earth was flat and that the sun went into hiding at night. These are the people you share your religion with. If any of them could have time traveled to this day and to this country to witness how this arcane religion continues to rule mass consciousness, they would either be horrified, or they would die laughing. There is no one who knows less about Christianty than Christians. Google "Who wrote the gospels" and keep reading for a month. You will find that no one knows who wrote the gospels. Google the synoptic problem of the gospels after that. There are only copies of copies of the gospels. In Greek, no less. Not the language of that area at that time. The original title pages are missing. I could go on, but I dont want to spoil your fun. Oh, and we reincarnate. So the whole paradigm of once and out, either hit a brick wall or each sushi poolside for eternity is a bit off. Theism is for the mentally disenfranchised. Be well.

  • Thanks Dr Sproul, You Lead by example, Nothing but the Word of God, that we Must embrace , thanks go on to Glory , Well done.

  • In so few but quintessentially powerful words, RC has explained the glory of the Good News. Grace, God’s grace, by which we are made righteous through Jesus Christ.

  • Believer squad I need ur help! everyone who truly knows there a Christian , spread the word go and let everyone about Jesus if they don’t understand it’s better to use ur time helping an unbeliever become a believer than doing ur own things u want
