The Falling Man | Behind The Photo | 100 Photos | TIME

Took an Express Subway train from times square to Chambers [street] which is to stop just before the world trade Center the first thing I saw was the two world trade centers both of them had smoke and fire coming from I just started making my pictures I was photographing the burning building when Emt says oh my gosh. Look at that, and we started seeing people coming down at the building I instinctively picked up my camera and started photographing them following him as they came down Until I photographed what must become known as the falling man It’s a very quiet photograph It’s not like a lot of other violent photographs from other disasters There’s no blood. There’s [no] guts. There’s nobody getting shot, but people react to it in a way that They feel that they can relate to this photograph That they might have been in the same situation, and they might have had to make whatever choice the man in the photograph made You have to be very aware of your surroundings when you’re in a situation like this you [have] to be careful that you don’t become [a] victim journalists don’t run away from falling building We don’t run away from the fire we run to it because it’s our job to record history [I] Didn’t know I [had] that photograph of that man in that position Until I actually saw it on my computer when I got back to [the] office I Called one of our photo editors, and I showed him the picture I said I [this] is it this has got to be the picture this man was like an arrow bisecting the two world trade centers I Woke up the next morning, and I opened up the paper, and there was my photograph of following that It was a very brave thing for them to use that picture it was the only picture that was like that of anybody falling from the building [the] only picture that showed any kind of human interaction [like] that a paper in Allentown Pennsylvania used the picture they put it on their whole back page in the newspaper And then the editor said that it was that important to photograph And he got a lot of mail letters the editor saying he shouldn’t have run this this is not something I want my children to see Tom [Juneau] the author of the esquire article. He’s the one who came up with the name the falling man That was the name of the article And it sort of stuck I’ve never regretted taking that photograph at all. It’s probably one of the only photographs that actually shows someone dying that [day] We have a terrorist attack on our own soil And we still don’t see pictures of our people dying and this is a photograph of someone dying you

Tbh, the people jumping/falling on LIVE TV is one of the things I remember most. I mean, it didnโ€™t go on for long, there wasnโ€™t even that much time between when the towers got hit and when they fell, an hour maybe? 90 mins? And I wasnโ€™t a kid per se, I was 20, but once those buildings actually collapsed, I definitely knew nothing would ever be the same again. Then, even more traumatic was the days afterward… They were showing lower Manhattan absolutely covered in posters and flyers of people trying to find their missing loved ones. Thousands. I think they pulled out like 7 survivors. It really really did change everything. Itโ€™s hard to describe to my kids, and anyone else who doesnโ€™t remember life beforehand. Whenever I stand shoeless at security in an airport with my 3 oz. bottles of contact solution and hand sanitizer in a clear plastic baggie, my mind flashes back to that day, those posters. I canโ€™t help but wonder if this man was on one.

  • He is wrong about one thing. There are pictures of others who died that day. What about all the firemen who were seen going into the WTC? A lot of those fellers never got out & yet we see their pictures in books. Just saying.

    1. WTC-7 freefall collapse supposedly caused by office fires but the impossibility of freefall without demolition devices ??

    2. NIST was not given the opportunity to examine WTC-7 steel remains when it is their job to identify any design or material deficiencies in an unusual collapse of a building ??

    3. Complete lack of wing debris at the Pentagon where a gigantic 757 supposedly crashed with no entry of the extensive wings.ย  Where were pieces of the flaps, ribs, aileron, tail section??
    4. The World Trade Center building scrap metal shipped "expedite" to China…80% of the steel were gone within 6 month of 9/11
    5. The motive of officials for confiscating privately owned video materials from the surrounding area of the Pentagon and not returning the material long after the 9/11 case was closed ??
    6. Unwillingness for the officials to release all the Pentagon security camera footages on 9/11 to this day ??

    7. The impossibility of the 767 crashing into the Twin Tower in one piece and especially without the outer wings breaking apart??

    8. The impossibility of cell phone calls made at cruising altitude at over 400mph over rural areas where cell phone towers are scarce back in 2001??

    9. Cheney gives Stand Down order—Fighter Interceptors not effectively engaged, Surface to Air Missile not used in restricted airspace to protect high value targets during a sudden threat of air war?? Did NORAD overlook the fact that a commercial airliner could be hijacked and be used as a missile and hit a nuclear power plant?? Think again. Then why wasn't the plane heading for the Pentagon tailed by a fighter and shot down??
    10. Mass Media ban of news reports that contradicts the official 9/11 story ??

    11. Rumsfeld not directly reporting to the Emergency Command Post after the 9/11 Attack when there can be no guessing if there could be further attacks including chemical or biological ??

    12. Shanksville…lack of commercial airline debris??

    13. Former Deputy Secretary of Defense Wolfowitz in the Bush Administration with dual citizenship…a complete violation of Department of Defense regulation to have a person in that high of a position with allegiance to a foreign country ??
    14. The presence of CIA and Secret Service in WTC-7 that marks that building as significant to their secretive activities ??
    15. No solid proof of the hijackers…not on the airline passenger manifest, not on official airport security camera with time stamp and location identification but only a passport supposedly survives when the FBI presumes that the almost indestructible "armored black box cores"were completely destroyed in the crash. Passport found before the collapse of the building on a domestic flight (No passport required on domestic flight)??
    16. The release of the Hollywood movie Pearl Harbor just prior to 9/11 for the New Pearl Harbor PSYOP??

I will never forget these images. Give me the platform, and I'd eradicate these sinister fucks and their ideology from history.

Its bizarre that someone can get a prize for taking a picture of an innocent person falling to their death. Itโ€™s like the swedish saying; one manโ€™s death is another mans bread.

By destroying the world, cities and lives, it is only a fair return. The Americans are predators who put the world through war and tears

  • sportinlife jones says:

Bush and Cheney the ultimate evil for knocking down the towers to justify a phony war for oil and for profit. Especially Cheney. Satan probably let Cheney sit on the throne when he gets down there.

  • i think the reason this photo is so famous is because you can clearly see the man dressed for work. it's the guy you see every day at the office; wearing his slacks and button down. that's why it's so relatable.

  • ShadowTail OwO says:

The people that jump, in every picture that ive seen. There bodies look so calm. They look so limp, and accepting. Its just like their letting this happen. I can imagine it. I can imagine what he heard, what he thought, what he felt. Honestly, its such a calm picture. I feel like he didnt hear the chaos around him. I feel like he heard ringing in his ears. And I feel like the only thought was the things he loved. Either that, or just the peace of mind. Then its all cut off. No more. 9/11 is such a haunting day. We lost so much. It's horrible. May all the people who died lay peacefully. And all the ones who lost somebody or something, I hope you're okay.

  • The towers blew up Cheney ,Rumsfeld,, don't believe the cretins from Washington, the towers were insured 3 days before the explosion! ! ! And you know who the insurers are… the Bush family

  • Jaxon Robertson says:

wasn't alive when this happened but is always blows my mind that something the destructive and deadly really happened and my heart goes out to all the family members and first responders that had to go through this horrible piece of history

  • I'm not American, I never witnessed the tragedy, I didn't have any family that were greatly impacted by it in any way, hell, I wasn't even alive when it happened, but just looking at the footage and hearing the lasts phone calls is just absolutely heartbreaking. Hearing their shakey voices and knowing that those will be some of the last words that they'll ever say stirs up so much emotion that I can't even describe. It's not just the phone calls that are so soul crushing, but images such as this one have you thinking of what was going through the victims' minds, knowing that they were going to die, and some, like this man, even accepting it. I know that this still affects people to this day, whether it be because they personally knew a victim, they witnessed it, were even in the building… etc. and if any one who is affected by what happened on 9/11 is reading this, then I want to send my prayers and wishes to you and your family. If this tragedy didn't affect my life in any way at all, and I'm this heartbroken by this, then I can't imagine the pain you had to go through. Stay strong

  • Imagine what it felt like to fight every ounce of your body, mind and spirits will to survive to let go from that height knowing it will be over instantly….most if not all of us have been asked or thought what it would be like to pick the way we die and I'm sure 99.9999999 percent said quick and painless….I dont know if this way was either.

  • Something that really gets on my nerves is that some of the terrorists that were involved were caught and killed they caused over a thousand people to lose their lives that day and the people from Saudi Arabia are still mad really angers me like if u agree >:(

  • While I will never believe the "Official" version of 9/11 spun by our lying ass government, this was still a sad day for those who lost a loved one. Just saying.

  • In doing some research, I've learned that the FBI changed the names of some of the alleged terrorist on the planes or from the planes manifest. I have the listings in a book I have. And some of those terrorist are said to still be alive & well living in the middle east. And there are still way too many holes in the official narrative of the 9/11 conspiracy theory spun by our government. And one of these days all those lies are gonna come right back & bite em all on the ass. Just hope I'm here to see it!

  • I may not have been born but I was 5 years later. When I was told about that attack I was like so confused and now Iโ€™m 12 years old and I feel so sorry for the people who lost their lives, family, friends and their towers

  • Stephanie Skarratts says:

Johnathan rip my heart is falling for you still 18 years later XXX never forgotten to you all, and to everyone who shared that horrendous day all round the world , stay strong in this world of war

  • Like a warning from history those people waving from then building is saying "Remember us!! Remember our horror, Remember our pain and NEVER allow this to happen again EVER!!!"
It doesn't matter if in the WTC, some building in Africa or the middle East those people had value. They are all loved by family. So like some vile monster terrorism should be crushed!

  • Never could have forgot this in the rest of my lifeโ€™s. Heart broken ๐Ÿ’. Still rmb how NYC residents walked through Brooklyn bridge to home … firefighters around world trade. ..the collapsed of world trade .

  • at 0:52 see all the smoke coming out in different windows, u can tell that stage ,and that wasn't made on 911, that was a fire practice drill, then put together with 911 ,background for it all the way!

  • Ashley Penfield says:

To be that at peace with yourself is something I probably couldn't do in that situation…. I still cry to this day seeing these poor people and the suffering and sacrifices they went through….

  • People probably think: no,why did they jump they could have made it! And that is maybe true but we donโ€™t know how it was up in there. I canโ€™t imagine how hard it was to breath, see or walk. They were desperate…R.I.P everyone who died at 9/11๐Ÿ˜ž๐Ÿฅ€

  • bush and our own government are responsible and helped do it! The people deserve justice against these evil traitors, it's been way to long for those scummy people to still be walking free and rich from their blood money!

  • This might shock u guys but I was in the east building when the plane hit I jumped out of a window and some peaple at the floor in the city got me and the fire fighters and the police and my brother was killed he was on flight 77 he died I survived and my mom survived she ran to the city were all the peaple were and then I jumped my mom got me and we ran and then the other plane hit and thatโ€™s when the 2 towers fell rip all the peaple who died in this

  • walkermanstick says:

He choose his death , he didnt wany do die on that burning building mybe he wanted to touch the ground one laste time , rest in peace brother …

  • That person falling was a living breathing human being, wearing regular clothes- looks like he went to work that day, not expecting what would happen and itโ€™s sad. He ended his own life because he knew there was little chance for him to survive and he wanted and the rest of the people who jumped wanted to end on their terms and not be stuck in a building

  • I can never imagine the pain of the person and the dilemma in which he had to make a decision where both the end results were death. Choosing how to die in minutes is just unbearable and haunting. If i would had been the photographer, i would have deleted the photo so that it wont haunt me through out my life. Brave were those people who jumped from such a height from where i wont even think of looking down. Its just horrifying

  • Checkerzzz gaming Hi says:

Here you all will be who got the funding from Congress and keeping the money sad see this man falling many of you will be falling jumping off building when they find all of you

  • MARGE TALICA hinkle says:

Its so very sad to think how early on 9/11 witnesses cite around 8 am prior to the attacks 5 art student dancers were setting up their camera equipment to document the event they knew about well before anyone else did!!! Hundreds of people were also given Idigo memos to avoid the WTC that day yet not one of them could alert authorities – warn co-workers or friends!!!! It is well over due that Justice and truth for the 9-11 Victims- happen they truly deserve it after all ofthe years of lies! America should never forget the victims and the real people user racist that caused it!

  • Popcorn With butter says:

Very very sad. Millions of Americans getting killed. Thank you George Bush and Larry Silverstein, May both your families rot in hell.

  • The guy that took this photo was also standing right behind Bobby Kennedy when he was shot and his jacket got covered in Kennedy's blood

  • AwesomeGamer7271 Playz says:

If we can all just have the power of changing back time. and arrest those hijackers before they get in the plane.. jesus christ.. it is such a cruel world………..

  • Kendell Sullivan says:

The lady who said, "I don't want my child to see this?" Doesnt understand how in 18 years violence doesn't effect people anymore. That this photo shows the sad truth of someone who had to come to the two choices of death, waiting…and possibly not dieing right away and being in intense pain. Or sudden death and you become unconscious as you fall and feel nothing…. I hope nothing like this ever happens again.. but if I was in the position id take a quick death. And if I believed in god. I'm sure he would of forgiven me for commiting suicide when I have no other choice.

  • Daven Williamson says:

Yeah get used to it because it's going to happen again I just hope it doesn't happen to you or I or our children but it will happen again. The owners of this world Don't Care About Us and the owners are who did this.

  • Daven Williamson says:

Why would somebody jump out of a building like that anyways? Have you ever looked into directed energy weapons? DEW? The dropping of the Trade Centers both buildings including Building 7 was an inside job there's no doubt about it. These people were murdered by our government and it pisses me off. They did it for an establishment event New World One World Government and if you listen to David Rockefeller or Henry Kissinger and you put the puzzle pieces together even though it's not that big of a puzzle you can see what's going on. There were no Arabs. Most likely Israelis. But who cares it doesn't matter what can you do about it except not be a d**** and believe the propaganda. Wake up.!

  • I was just 4 when this happened but gosh, it still hurts me deeply even if I had no perception of it the moment if happened ๐Ÿ™
