Coming up on SPTV…. Amateur sports tourneys bring big bucks to
our economy…. And let the open swim season begin! Hi I’m Diane Arthur and welcome to SPTV…. Surprise continues to thrive as a sports tourism
destination! Baseball talent from across the country is
headed to Surprise for a series of nationally-recognized baseball tournaments this summer. Each tournament will host players from across
the country in showcasing their abilities on a regional and national level…. The Wilson Premier Championship West event
June 6 – 10, features 85 teams from Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada,
Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington players as they showcase skills in front of college
coaches from some of the best schools in the country, including Arizona State….. June 13-16 and June 20-23 we host two age
divisions for Prep Baseball Report. This event brings 30 teams to town from Arizona,
California, Colorado, Missouri and New Mexico….. June 30 – July 8, USA Baseball will provide
over 50 teams an opportunity for their players to showcase their best to make it onto the
national team at the USA Baseball U16 West National Championships. And the elite amateur baseball scouting event
“Perfect Game” is July 12-18 and July 19-25. At Perfect Game events, players compete against
top level talent in front of college recruiters and pro scouts from across the country. Look for 150 teams to participate. Collectively, these events are expected to
generate over 1,500 room nights, with over 30,000 visitors, resulting in an economic
impact of over $1 million in hotel stays, food, gas and many other local retail markets. For additional information contact the Sports
and Tourism Department at 623-222-2253. The city is accepting adult sports league
registration for new and returning teams. Adult Co-Ed and Men’s Softball leagues begin
the week of June 17…. The men’s basketball season begins June
18… Co-ed Kickball and Indoor Volleyball begin
later in June, as does Co-ed and men’s soccer play. For more information call 623.222.2271. And this summer you will begin noticing a
change for the Community and Recreation Services Department…. To better communicate the core services that
this awesome department provides, we will be transitioning the department’s name to
Parks and Recreation. Over time we will be making the name changes
to the web, signage and other documents. While we may not be as funny as the former
TV show Parks and Rec, I promise our programs will remain top-notch. Our city pools kick off the open swim season
on May 25…. And what better way to stay cool, than to
enjoy a Dive In Movie Night at the Aquatic Center…. The next one is set for June 15 at 7:30 pm,
where you can enjoy “Aquaman.” Very appropriate! Tickets are $5 for residents and paid concessions
are available. The movie is rated PG-13, so children 12 and
younger must be accompanied by an adult. And as a reminder, always watch your kids
around water. On behalf of the city of Surprise, thanks
for watching.
