Should Americans fear automation? Andrew Yang says jobs are suffering

TO THEIR CONTROL. SO WE TOLD YOU A LOT ON THIS SHOW ABOUT THE POTENTIAL DANGERS OF BIG TECH. SOME OF THOSE DANGERS ARE IMMINENT AND TECHNOLOGICAL AND THE MAIN ONE IS ROBOTICS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. REMARKABLY, THE PERSON, THE POLITICAL FIGURE WHO IS MAKING THE MOST SENSE ON THIS SUBJECT WHO HAS THOUGHT ABOUT IT MOST DEEPLY IS A DEMOCRAT WHO IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. HE IS ANDREW YANG. HE IS AN ENTREPRENEUR AND DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND EXPANDED AUTOMATION COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE VIOLENCE IN THIS COUNTRY AND WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW. HE JOINS US TONIGHT. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR COMING ON AND I MEANT THAT WITH SINCERITY. I HAVEN’T HEARD ANYBODY IN OUR POLITICAL CONVERSATION DESCRIBE THE THREAT AS CLEARLY AND COMPELLINGLY AS YOU HAVE. WHY SHOULD WOULD HE BE WORRIED ABOUT AUTOMATION?>>IF YOU LOOK AT THE BACK DROP WE AUTOMATED AWAY 4 MILLION MANUFACTURING JOBS MICHIGAN, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, WISCONSIN, MISSOURI AND THOSE COMMUNITIES HAVE NEVER RECOVERED WHERE IF YOU LOOK AT THE NUMBERS HALF OF THE WORKERS LEFT THE WORKFORCE AND NEVER WORKED AGAIN AND THEN HALF OF THAT GROUP FILED FOR DISABILITY NOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MANUFACTURING WORKERS IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE TRUCK DRIVERS, CALL CENTERS AND FAST FOOD WORKERS ON AND ON THROUGH THE ECONOMY AS WE EVOLVE IN TECHNOLOGY MARGINALIZES THE LABOR OF MORE AND MORE AMERICANS.>>Tucker: WHAT WILL THE EFFECTS OF THAT. THAT’S A MASSIVE DISPLACEMENT OF PEOPLE. WHAT WILL HAPPEN ONCE THAT HAPPENS?>>WELL, AS YOU SAID, I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE DISASTROUS WHERE IF YOU LOOK AT TRUCK DRIVERS ALONE, BEING A TRUCKER IS THE MOST COMMON JOB IN 29 STATES THERE ARE 3.5 MILLION TRUCK DRIVERS IN THIS COUNTRY. AND MY FRIENDS IN SILICON VALLEY ARE WORKING ON TRUCKS THAT CAN DRY THEMSELVES BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE THE MONEY IS WE CAN SAVE TENS, EVEN HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS BY TRYING TO AUTOMATE THAT JOB. I WAS JUST WITH TRUCK DRIVERS IN IOWA LAST WEEK AND IMAGINING THAT COMMUNITY RECOVERING FROM THEIR INCOME GOING FROM LET’S CALL IT $50,000 A YEAR TO MUCH, MUCH LESS THAN THAT CATASTROPHICALLY. IT’S GOING TO BE A DISASTER FOR MANY, MANY AMERICAN COMMUNITIES.>>Tucker: YOU ARE ONE OF THE ONLY PEOPLE I HAVE MET HONEST ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF INDUSTRIAL LABOR INDUSTRIALIZABOR INDUSTRIALIZATOR INDUSTRIALIZATION. ALL BECOME COMPUTER PROGRAMMERS THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN. MY QUESTION IS DO WE HAVE TO SIT PASSIVELY BACK AND LET THIS HAPPEN TO HAPPEN TO THE COUNTRY.>>THAT’S WHY I’M RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. I THINK IT WOULD BE INSANE TO WATCH THIS AUTOMATION WAVE OVERTAKE OUR COUNTRY AND ECONOMIES. WE ARE NOT OSTRICHES. WE GET IT. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS REAL. SELF-DRIVING CARS AND TRUCKS TESTED ON THE HIGHWAYS RIGHT NOW AND WE NEED TO EVOLVE AND START PUSHING THE WAY WE THINK OF ECONOMIC PROGRESS TO INCLUDE HOW OUR FAMILIES ARE DOING, HOW OUR CHILDREN ARE DOING. AND THINGS MATTER TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. G.D.P. IS GOING TO LEAD US OFF A CLIFF. YOU KNOW, ROBOT TRUCKS GREAT FOR G.D.P. TERRIBLE FOR MANY, MANY AMERICAN COMMUNITIES. GET WITH THE PROGRAM AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO ACTUALLY MAKE THIS ECONOMY WORK FOR PEOPLE.>>Tucker: I SIT WITH MY JAW OPEN I AGREE WITH YOU SO STRONGLY. LET ME ASK YOU FINALLY WHY ISN’T THIS A CENTRAL QUESTION IN THE CAMPAIGN OF EVERYBODY RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT ON ANY SIDE AND WHY INSTEAD ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT ISSUES THAT ARE REALLY ARE KIND OF FRIVOLOUS? WHY AREN’T THEY TALKING ABOUT THIS.>>IT’S A GOOD QUESTION, TUCKER. ONE OF THE REASONS I’M RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT IS TO PUSH THIS IN THE CENTER OF THE MAINSTREAM AGENDA WHERE EVERY CANDIDATE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO ABOUT THE FACT THAT WE’RE AUTOMATING AWAY THE MOST COMMON JOBS IN THE ECONOMY RIGHT NOW. AS WE ARE SITTING HERE TOGETHER THE LABOR FORCE PARTICIPATION RATE IN THE UNITED STATES IS 63.2%. THE SAME LEVEL AS ECUADOR AND COSTA RICA. AND IF ANYONE THINKS THAT’S WHERE AMERICA OUGHT TO BE, THAT NUMBER IS EVEN GOING TO BE FURTHER CHALLENGED WHEN ALL OF THIS TECHNOLOGY COMES ONLINE. MAKE AMERICA EMBRACE THIS CHALLENGE OF THE 21st CENTURY AND THEN TRY AND ADDRESS IT TOGETHER AS A PEOPLE.>>Tucker: LAST QUESTION. SHOULDN’T PEOPLE WHO CITE UNEMPLOYMENT STATISTICS BE PENALIZED FOR SAYING SOMETHING SO STUPID?>>YEAH. WE HAVE A SERIES OF BAD NUMBERS. AND I REFER TO G.D.P. AS ONE CERTAINLY HEADLINE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS COMPLETELY MISLEADING AND ONE OF MY MANDATES AS PRESIDENT IS I’M GOING TO UPDATE THE NUMBERS. THEY ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.>>YES, YES. SO WE CAN KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON. OTHERWISE YOU CAN’T MAKE WISE DECISIONS.>>RIGHT NOW AGAIN AND YOU KNOW. THIS OUR LIFE EXPECTANCY HAS DECLINED FIRST TIME IN 100 YEARS BECAUSE OF A SURGE IN SUICIDES AND DRUG OVERDOSES. HOW CAN YOU SAY AN ECONOMY IS HEALTHY WHEN OUR PEOPLE ARE DYING?>>I LITERALLY — I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ON THE OTHER ISSUES AND I JUST SUPPORT WHAT YOU SAID SO

  • Wow!! A candidate once in a successive generations. Smart, sharp and knows how to solve America's problems. Make him your president.

  • Vincent Gagliano says:

Alright, not to take away from the conversation. Because it's an important one. Check out 0:34 . He got stuck.

  • Tucker seems genuinely enthusiastic on Yang. I have a feeling he might vote for Yang in the general election if he makes it there.

  • That's why we're here today………..Andrew Yang has lined up this kind of people…..like-minded people , all of us seeking the same thing, the higher order of ourselves. THAT IS WHAT AUTHENTIC POWER IS. AUTHENTIC POWER IS USING THE ENERGY OF YOUR PERSONALITY TO SERVE WHAT YOU WERE BORN TO DO. ANDREW HAS FOUND A HEALTHY, GROUNDED, WHOLESOME PART OF HIS PERSONALITY TO LIVE IN AND LIVE BY. HE HAS A NEW PERCEPTION OF COMMUNITY. THE ONLY WAY TO CHANGE THE WORLD IS TO CHANGE YOURSELF. ANDREW YANG IS USING HIS PERSONALITY TO SERVE HIS GREATER CALLING. WE ARE EACH VEHICLES OF GLOBAL TRANSFORMATION. DISTINGUISH BETWEEN LOVE AND FEAR IN YOURSELF, AND CHOOSE LOVE EVERY TIME! THAT'S THE WAY TO AUTHENTIC POWER. ANDREW YANG IS SO INSPIRING!!!

  • We have tons of data on the direction of our economy and no one uses the data..until now. High tech people know how fast these changes are coming.
I am voting for Yang even if I have to write in his name.

  • Jeff Greenwade says:

Andrew Yang 2020! He's a fact and policy oriented candidate, and he's the only "politician" talking about and informed on AI and automation. He also doesn't have political baggage, and he really doesn't care about anything else except coming up with real, good, meaningful solutions to modern problems.

Side note: he also seems to make some on the left very angry. So if you like his ideas and want to troll the left, vote Andrew Yang! 😉

  • Chinese Bots taking over Fox News overnight, by weary America… Be forever skeptical of foreign influence in social media. Question why nearly ALL positive Yang comments are generating 600-800 thumbs up, Yang is just NOT that popular.

  • Does it seem a bit suspicious that every single comment on a Fox News video is pro Yang? Is youtube messing with this comment section or are these Chinese bots?

  • We need to organize circuit government positions for government tasks that maintain the proper functioning of public programs. These positions can be standardized and catered to the general human public, while we eradicate infiltration including 'underworld sleepers'. People automation, not machines.

  • Samba Warrior says:

Im not against people like jeff bezos etc getting rich, because they have earned it. However, there is a problem when they are bordering on monopolies, where there are automated warehouses, grocery stores, cars etc. They and these companies are sucking up all the resources and making huge profits while the rest are getting nothing but anxiety. Lets build a society where these companies are allowed to exist and grow, but also serve the people, and not just the ultra billionaires at the top. Lets automate away the warehouses, transport etc, and redistribute the money to the people who can then focus on more important things, like maintaining a stable and healthy society. Keep the communities clean, improve agriculture help out when help is needed. Working solely for money like we do today by having dumb jobs is not helping us progress. Oh and banks are getting more and more automated a swell, and so is the law professions.

  • Take a look at HK lately? Unemployment and underemployment is already starting to gut China's manufacturing-centered economy. American service-oriented economy will be automated away in 5-10 years. Got that long for us to do something before the riots start.

    600,000,000,000.00 offset welfare benefits

    $2,170,800,000,000.00 net cost

    paid for by:

800,000,000,000.00 increase in taxes – VAT

    $1,370,800,000,000.00 subtotal

700,000,000,000.00 savings in cost of homelessness, emergency room care, incarceration,
    $670,800,000,000.00 subtotal

800,000,000,000.00 increased revenue from 10 to 12% increase in GDP from healthier more productive citizens and taxes on top earners and pollution.*

$(129,200,000,000.00) it could more than pay for itself

  • Congratulations to Tucker for being honest and able to listen. I’m a hardcore conservative but Andrew strikes me as a independent in democratic clothing that I can get behind.

  • Listen man, anyone who can get Tucker to agree with them on just about every point deserves to have a go at the presidency…good luck Andrew!

  • I dont know, he raised his hand when the question was asked: "Do you believe in providing free healthcare to undocumented immigrants?"

  • Toyota Toddler says:

To all Republican friends, if you support yang please register as a Democrat and support him in the primaries! A notable strength of the Yang campaign is his support from both sides of the political spectrum, so we can use all the help we can get!

  • christian0097 says:

Even though Yang would have no chance against Trump in the debates and I highly doubt he would win the primary. I am so happy that Tucker gave him the respect and time to articulate his points, it is common sense, so you have to wonder if a few people are getting it right and you think its right, why are the super super wealthy not getting it?? Because they dont need to worry Bout it.

  • Fernando Martinez says:

Why can't the rest of the DNC see this? If you come onto a Conservative News Network, you'll get fair treatment and constructive criticism. Every Time he shows up, people make it very clear that he and any Democrat that's willing to speak constructively, is welcome any time. Tolsi Gabbard is the only other one to do this.

  • "I don't even know what you think on the other issues and I just support you on what you said so much."

    – Tucker Carlson to Andrew Yang, Democratic Presidential Candidate.

That is what we call building a consensus. Not left, not right. Forward.

  • I’m sure most likely won’t make it as president but Trump should bring him on in to help with this issue and the one with corporations arnt paying taxes.

  • BottleofFaygo 500 says:

The only Democratic Candidate who actually makes sense and does not seem corrupted like the other Democrats. Yang and Trump seem like the only good candidates.

  • This guy is real deal, thank you Tucker for having him on. Mr. Yang has refreshing look on things and he has my support!

  • Andrew Yang is the one to take on Trump. While others debate with emotions he does it with facts. He'll provide no fuel for Trump's fire of emotionally charged retorts. If the democrats will put aside their own personal agendas and look at what's best for the country they'll realize Yang is the best choice. I like Bernie and Warren too but I can see how a debate between either of them and Trump would be a hot mess. Yang is calm and collected yet clearly passionate

  • Let me see a dummy of a president who is dividing this nation. Who is narcissistic and self gloating. Or a very smart Asian American who is neither left nor right but forward thinking and offers real solutions to America’s problems. I say Yang in 2020. MATH. Make America Think Again…

  • If we vote for him in the Democratic primary, we will see yang vs trump in the debates, and in the general election.

We can only stand to gain, competition would make Trump to have an answer to these issues.

  • Andrew Wang is racist an coward. Because he said that white men are going to shoot everybody when all the jobs are gone.

  • Fox News is doing service to many Americans by allowing Andrew to speak while so called liberal media try to shut him down. Its time Americans choose a democrat nominee who believe in freedom, choice and the miracles of market and entrepreneurship.

  • YouCanCallMeReTro says:

Wow a candidate talking about real issues that affect the American people and not focusing on sideshow issues

  • I am not afraid of A I or automation if it not integrate into nations defence, productivity is a core capitalism economy, and it is healthy, AI and automation is a product of capitalism model,
And please find a place for socialism, hehehe to give humanity, live long into time,
And UBI at a caped annual gross earnings ,for workers, is socialism move, hehehe i am sure it will balance capitalism nicely,
And it will save the capitalism model from it self.

  • DoesItTakeGlockMags? says:

Let Trump finish fixing what the Clintons ruined until 2024 and then have Yang come after to move us forward but he needs to have more love for the 2A

  • Brave for Tucker to have a serious & un-snarky discussion with Yang, a candidate on the opposite aisle at Fox… both men are good… Yang is a future thinker, even if he is affiliated as a Democrat

  • I’ve never seen so many good comments for a lefty on fox… yang is on another level. This guy is gonna unite us and push us forward.

    YANG 2020

  • AndJusticeForALL says:

This guy has actual solutions that can effect us immediately. All the other crap the other politicians say is a distraction. They offer ZERO solutions. This guy has my vote and donation

  • 3:45 Tucker knew that Andrew Yang didn't cited the unemployment statistic since Tucker believes that its stupid, so he tested him with that question. I like how impress he was when Andrew Yang was able to grasped the goal of that question and pointed it out to Tucker that he agrees with it as well, and wanted to make the statistic even clearer to the people.

  • It's blowing my mind that a democratic candidate has Tucker's respect. Andrew is not left nor right, he's forward!!!

  • Артём Лузик says:

I fully understand people who voted for Trump. When you lost you job and someone tells you "hey, I will turn time backward!" – that sounds nice. But in real life you can't. Robots will take our jobs, that's is fact. But, Yang's idea is to make turn it from a threat to a good thing. Universal Basic Income can sounds like a ridiculous idea, BUT remember that just little more than 100 years ago the pension on retirement was a ridiculous idea too. "What, you get paid just because you are old? That's stupid". Check Wikipedia – pension became a thing just 100 years ago. And now it's a normal thing. UBI was not possible in the past, but now, thanks to robots, we can make it. That's why robots can be a good thing, not a thread. UBI is a basically human right to live. If you think about it – a human must has a right not to die homeless when he loses job. So, anyway, in the future some sort of Andrew Yang will be a president. Not just in America. May be not this particular Andrew Yang, may be not in 2020, but that's the future. Face it. And vote for Andrew Yang

  • And Coca Cola killed the soda shops 100 years ago.
And McDonalds killed small diners 50 years ago.
And Macys killed mom and pop stores long ago.
And Sears catalogues killed small retail businesses about 75 years ago.
And the internet made newspapers almost obsolete.
And Youtube has cut down TV viewership.
    It's called progress, Andrew.

Business is tough. Always has been…always will be.
This is all a smokescreen created by the Dems and perpetuated further by Mr Yang.

  • It's called "progress," Andrew.

They said the same thing about the printing press.
    The motor car.
    The word processor.
The assembly line built by Henry Ford over 100 years ago.
    The internet.

  • No clue who the interviewer is, but I had the same reaction to Yang when I watched his Joe Rogan interview. Finally a political candidate with a brain!
