UNDERAGE DRINKING IS COMING UNDER FIRE. THAT’S BECAUSE IT INCLUDES A POLL GIVING AREA SCHOOLS A PARTYING STEREOTYPE. KAKE’S MONICA CASTRO WAS IN ANDOVER TODAY AND TALKED TO STUDENTS ABOUT THE ARTICLE MAKING WAVES. HERE’S A PRINT OUT COPY OF THE ARTICLE… IN IT, IT LABELS SCHOOLS AND THEIR PARTYING PERSONALITY. WICHITA SCHOOLS LABELED “GHETTO” AND “DIFFERENT” ROSE HILL LABLED “REDNECK” AND “BONFIRES. SOME STUDENTS I TALKED TO SAY THE NEWSPAPER COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT THE HARSH STEREOTYPES. IN THE LATEST EDITION OF ANDOVER HIGH SCHOOL’S BLUESTREAK NEWSPAPER. THE TOP STORY… SHEDS LIGHT ON UNDERAGE DRINKING. BUT IT WASN’T THE FEATURE STORY THAT RAISED EYEBROWS. IT WAS THE POLL LABELING AREA SCHOOLS FOR IT’S PARTYING WAYS. “I think it was kind of offensive. They probably should have thought more about the other schools and how they would take the information.” 01;08;54 “it kind of makes our schools look bad because they were doing Wichita schools, Rose Hill, Derby and those schools and it makes it seem like that’s all school is about, partying.” OTHERS SAY THEY DON’T SEE WHAT THE BIG DEAL ABOUT THE ARTICLE IS. “I can see some people taking offense to it but it’s mostly kind of a joke. I don’t think anyone is trying to offend anyone.” PARENTS AND STUDENTS SHOCKED ABOUT THIS ARTICLE SAY HOW CAN A STUDENT RUN PUBLICATION GET AWAY WITH THIS… BUT THEY CAN UNDER THE KANSAS STATE PUBLICATIONS ACT. ACCORDING TO THE LAW IT STATES…. [gfx] Material shall not be suppressed solely because it involves political or controversial subject matter. THE ANDOVER SCHOOL DISTRICT ISSUED KAKE NEWS A STATEMENT ABOUT THE SURVEY IN QUESTION. [gfx] Through the Kansas State Publications Act and Andover School District Board Policy JHC, students who have facts and opinions should be allowed to express them in print as well as through oral communications. “the statistics were good but I feel like they could have done without the comments about the other schools.” THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SAYS THEIR STUDENT EDITORS AND WRITERS HAVE THE SAME LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES AS THOSE IN PROFESSION. I REACHED OUT TO WICHITA PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT – WHO WERE MENTIONED IN THE SURVEY — THEY DECLINED TO COMMENT.
