ONE WORLD: TARA STILES & DEEPAK CHOPRA

I'm Deepak Chopra you're watching one world and the program is coming to you today from New York City from the Nasdaq building my very special guest today is Tara Stiles she's a very famous celebrity her staff and a great yoga teacher and doing a lot of amazing work helping people all over the world we'll come to that in a little while I wanna start we met at some function a few years ago and then you actually became my teacher for a while and still are where did you grow up Tara I'm from a tiny little town and Illinois where everybody reads your book so everybody reads your books all around the world so I grew up doing meditation just on my own and it was a farm town so lots of corn fields and lots of open space so I did that and did ballet growing up as well so I had yoga and the ballet program so I started doing that from a young age and just kept going mm-hmm when did you move to New York pretty much right after high school so growing up doing dance I always wanted to live here and doing yoga I knew there was a lot of other yoga opportunities here so I just packed my bags and headed on over and when did you take a yoga training yourself I did some sort of informally growing up with different different teachers and then when I moved here I did a few different trainings and a lot of different styles and then just started to realize that all the styles were so different from each other and a lot of them didn't get along with each other and I grew up just you know believing and thinking yoga was this amazing thing that everybody could do but I didn't know there was all this controversy within all the worlds so I was really learning a lot of school many schools yeah learning that there was all these different so I saw an opportunity to more you know invite more people by making it more easygoing and less rigid and more fun so I just started making a lot of friends in yoga and just shake an easygoing way if that was the genesis of stralla yoga i guess i mean i didn't really set out to absolutely not set out to create a note my own style of yoga I thought that was really narcissistic and crazy and just too much of a headache and not really what I thought yoga was anyway I always saw Leo –ga as you know the union of mind body and spirit and just one yoga and I thought having schools was kind of interesting but like also keeping people out of it so I kept leading yoga classes in this very simple way and everybody said oh this is a different style it's you know the movements are in English you're playing music or you're telling me if it doesn't feel good I can do something else it doesn't have a lot of rules so a few years went by and people sort of pushed me into saying you know okay you should create this as a style like if you do you can have instructors that help more people and it can be you know still in a very open system but creating some structure around it can actually do some good in the world so with a lot of resistance I sort of did that and that was the beginning of Australia oh yes and we have a big studio here in New York City yeah there's a studio down and and Soho called stralla and then we have a partner studios now around the world
