MA Sound Design for Film and Television

Sound is the most important element in storytelling.
In film, in television, even in gaming as well. It is the element
which envelops the audience. Whilst it’s invisible, many people don’t realise
how important it is. What I like about it is the fact that you
can subtly influence the way that the viewer feels the emotions of the
movie and is told the story. You can tell a lot of story through sound. We learn all the aspect necessary to be competent
in the media industry. TV studio, animations, video games, documentary,
dramas, but on top of that there is a strong academic
background that helps us understand how to develop message through
sound. It starts probably about where that little
peak is so just trim it into there. The best aspect I found form the course is
that you’ve got to work on a lot of collaborative projects with other students
from different disciplines so I had I had a particular interest in sound for animation,
so it was great to come here and work with the animation students
from the university. Developing a portfolio of collaborative work with directors,
editors and other disciplines and things that you do on your own. It was that showreel that helped me get a
job at studio. The media School within Bournemouth University’s
campus is very well equipped. We have got 24 hours a day access to our facilities. You get to use industry standard equipment
which is great because when you get out into the real world, that’s what employers
expect you to use. For example we have Foley studio where we
can do all the production for the films, the short films or voice overs with really
good microphones. For location recordings we have field recording kits that include
SQN kits with the Sennheiser radio mics and shotgun microphones. It’s great to learn in a pro-tools environment. the course has been running since 1997 and
we’ve got a number of graduates which have worked very successfully in the
feature industry but also who have made very respectable careers for themselves
in the games industry. After I finished the course I worked in a
studio in Dubai. We worked on big brands like Pepsi, Nike, Coca-Cola doing sound design
for TV commercials. So far on the course I have been doing animations.,
documentaries, short films, commercials now I’m aiming to do my masters
project in video games. Bournemouth is a great place to live, you’ve
got the beach, the forest, it’s a vibrant town, there’s a lot going on
here. it has a lot of different clubs, bars, restaurants,
whatever you need. I actually grew up here so I was lucky enough
to have one of the best universities for sound design on my doorstep.
