Compared to the elderly, young people are far more active on social media such as Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp. But seniors have been catching up in recent years. Five years ago, 13 percent of the over-75s were active on social media. This has gone up since then to 40 percent. The most used form of social media is texting, for example via WhatsApp. In recent years, this has risen most among 65 to 74-year-olds but it has also become more popular among the over-75s. The elderly are also increasingly active on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. 17 percent of the over-75s are active on a social network. This is nearly three times as much as five years ago. In addition, internet calls have surged among seniors. Over the past few years, the share of over-75s making internet phone calls has risen from 6 to 18 percent. Would you like to stay on top of our figures? Subscribe to our YouTube channel.
