Headlines: Teaching Partners September Meeting

We’re here at the first meeting of the
Teaching Partners. The Teaching Partners is a faculty learning community
facilitated by the Teaching Center. We engage faculty across all campuses and
all disciplines who want to learn a little bit more about their teaching
learning and improve their acumen through the resources that we provide
here at the Teaching Center. I really value the opportunity to come to where
there are other faculty members who really care about teaching and who have
a lot of ideas about teaching as an opportunity for us to share our
experiences, concerns, ideas. I work in the School of Nursing and often times the
Health Science schools are not in collaboration with the other schools on
campus. So I think the faculty should collaborate more and learn about what is
going on in other parts of campus as well. In this particular meeting we have
three separate round tables underway. Each roundtable is discussing a different
topic about educational technology or something timely in higher education. So
it was an opportunity to think about three things that maybe had not
necessarily occurred to me to give some thought to and hear particularly what
people in other disciplines are thinking about those topics which were mentoring,
creativity, and working with LatinX students and faculty. We really want the
Teaching Partners to feel like this community is for them and by them. There are very few opportunities for us as teachers to talk about teaching and it’s
very liberating to do that. We’ve had folks from outside of the Pitt community
join us for Teaching Partners meetings so the networking opportunity is pretty
powerful. I don’t think we can do enough as far as collaborating with
faculty from other schools and I think we need to have more of that and more
evidence-based practice so that we can work to improve our student experiences
which will improve our student outcomes. I think students benefit when faculty
think harder about what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and how else they
might do it. Faculty you’re invited to join at any
point throughout the school year and if you’re looking for more
information you can find it on our website: teaching.pitt.edu.
