Headlines: Light board

I am Sam Dickerson. I’m an assistant
professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. My
name is Sera Thornton. I’m a learning scientist and teaching consultant here
at the Center for Teaching and Learning at Pitt. I’ve been using this light board to
record videos for my class. Setup was easy–it’s as simple as: press a button
and do what you would normally do in the classroom. The light board is basically
the same thing as a normal freestanding whiteboard. It’s made out of glass, but
what it does is it makes your writing glow. You are facing the camera because
you’re being filmed through the light board. Your writing is appearing in front of you as if you were just writing on the
screen of the video. This semester was the first time that I tried it and I used
it just for quiz solutions. I now have been able to cover more
material in class because I’m not spending time in class reviewing these
solutions. I got student feedback saying how much
they appreciated having a video where they could go through the quiz solution
step-by-step. They could go back to the portions that they didn’t understand and
a number of students told me that they watch the videos that I produce
repeatedly. Educational video is a really great tool to use with your students
because it allows them to have a resource that they can go back to and
study exactly what they need to learn, exactly what they’re having trouble with. I think because of the quality of the video that results from using the
light board that students are actually motivated to actually watch them. It was
based off of the student feedback that drove me to continue to produce these
videos for the entire semester. The Teaching Center has been absolutely
phenomenal. Sera, who has been leading the effort on the light board, has taken me through all the steps necessary to use it. Setting up the board,
advising me on what makes a good video, and I think all of that support from the
Teaching Center has been why the videos have come out so good.
