Film and Television Production Degree at Edge Hill University

My name is Joe Preston and I
study film and television
production at Edge Hill University. When I first became interested
in the subject of film would
be at A-Level studying film studies and
A-Level art and design, two
different passions of creating things and
studying things really came
together. The reason why I chose this
particular course is because
on the Open Day and Applicant Day it was a very
safe learning environment that’s
very important to me and the facilities here were
really going to give me a
chance to explore what I wanted out
of the course. What I have studied over the
past three years , is very
broad but very specified at the same
time. For example first year is
quite a general look at the
practice and theory, second year is a lot more
specified, for example I took
a cinematography module called Advanced
Production and editing module
called Advanced Post Production. And then in third year, I’ve
just implemented what I’ve
learnt over the past two years and
the put that into my final
produce. So for the most part when you
go into a lecture it’s going
to be theory based, where as seminars and
workshops are a lot more
practice based. I am assessed through
coursework in our group
productions or individual productions or individual
essays. The strengths of the staff
would be their industry
standard experience, they’ve all worked within
industry, the staff are
research active. The teaching staff have
supported me both academically
and personally. The facilities are absolutely
amazing, for example the edit
suites all have 5K Macs in them, run
very fast very smooth, great
for editing. We also have access to an
amazing TV studio, state of
the art facility and the equipment we have access
to is constantly being updated
so we have the best technology available
to us. The resources I couldn’t have
done without would have to be
the Media Store where we book all of our
equipment and the editing
suites. We have a lot of guest
speakers come in, for example
David Morrissey from The Walking Dead and
David Yates whose directed a
few of the Harry Potter Films. In terms of work experience I
know have a camera internship
starting at Lime Pictures. Another benefit would be the
trip to York to the Aesthetica
Film Festival I was able to book onto a
workshop and really network
with people. The careers that are open to
students are vast, for example
this could be cinematography , editing
within film, television,
marketing, social media. My course highlight would have to be my
experimental film being chosen
to premiere at Keswick Film Festival and
support one of my tutors
feature films. The three words I would use to
describe the course would be practical, insightful and
varied.
