welcome to the UCSC film and digital
media department our major offers an integrated curriculum where students
study the cultural impact of movies television video and the internet while
also producing creative work in video and interactive digital media if so
desired this Bachelor of Arts degree provides students with the critical
skills to analyze world cinema popular TV and new media along with the
technical aesthetic and intellectual principles fundamental to creating a new
work in these forms film and digital media are key technologies of our age
and central engines of California’s economy by studying their global
cultural impact and by producing a new generation of media literate media
makers our program provides the critical and artistic vision vital to 21st
century citizenship students who earn a BA in film and digital media will gain
the skills knowledge and understanding that will enable them to demonstrate
their ability to employ research skills including the use of appropriate print
and Technology sources in the discipline to construct effective arguments to
understand pre-production process and post-production digital media and
filmmaking processes they will be able to demonstrate the relationship between
different types of form and meaning through the creation of film and digital
media projects or the critical analysis of them
and their ability to work collaboratively to produce a film or
digital media project our students will gain a broad knowledge of film and media
history internationally and develop scholarly writing skills appropriate to
the discipline of film and digital media they will be able to analyze interpret
and critique films and media from a variety of theoretical perspectives
using the critical vocabulary and methodologies of the discipline and
will be able to articulate and defend their research and practice in a
critical environment this major is for students who wish to learn how to view
and analyze film and media in depth and to explore or enhance their abilities as
filmmakers or digital media makers including animation if that is the path
they wish to pursue the students may choose to complete the requirements for
our general major which focuses mainly on critical studies learning film theory
and history and doing critical and cultural analysis of film and media the
general major does allow students to explore some video or digital media
production if they wish there are also other opportunities for students to
pursue further critical studies or production courses beyond what is
required for the general major many of our students choose to double major or
pursue a minor in another discipline if students plan carefully they may
complete both degrees in four years some of the other areas of study our students
have combined with film and digital media are art theater arts history of
art and visual culture electronic music synthesis
history literature psychology and the Latino and latin-american studies our
major offers quarterly fellowships to our students to support their class
projects or research film and digital media students affiliated with Porter
College in their junior or senior year may apply for these funds near the
beginning of each fall winter and spring quarter to support projects or research
they will be completing that quarter students can become involved with
internships in the area including the Museum of Art and history located in
downtown Santa Cruz Santa Cruz community television the Santa Cruz Film Festival
and the International Jazz Festival we maintain close relationships with past
alumni of our program who are currently successful in the industry and offer
students internships our students have interned at various companies such as
Lionsgate Pixar Walt Disney and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences these internships are great networking tools and some of our
students have been hired by these agencies after graduation there are many
opportunities to study abroad taking film courses at schools located
around the world our department has developed a special relationship with
Sussex University in Brighton England where students can participate in a
direct exchange program and substitute several film courses toward their major
studying abroad exposes you to other cultures and the art history of that
country and may create friendships that can last a lifetime graduates of the
program have established careers as professionals in the fields of film
video television and digital media working as filmmakers editors digital
media artists film archivist media educators script analysts
cinematographers television producers computer programmers and studio
executives recent graduates have screened work at the Sundance Film
Festival cinequest the Milan Film Festival cannes Film Festival and on HBO
graduates have a strong track record of gaining admission to top graduate
programs for MA MFA and PhD degrees including USC UCLA NYU Columbia Chapman
the American Film Institute Cal arts the University of Iowa and the University of
wisconsin-madison the Career Center on campus is an
excellent resource for students looking for resume writing workshops career
options job announcements and general guidance on pursuing a career in film
and digital media
