EBU Hybrid Radio – explained (2011)

I have always loved the raw energy
and the creativity of live radio. What you can see behind me is a
radio show with a difference. Lotta Bromé, the queen of
the Swedish airwaves… ..is interviewing guests in her
inimatable style. We at the EBU are using our production tools,
to create visualization around that show. We are using technologies like
RadioDNS and DAB Slideshow… ..to provide pictures, social media, slides… ..to fill those blank screens
on smartphones and on iPads. We are making the radio of tomorrow, today. We are doing it cheaply, efficiently
and in a way that all our Members can do it. We have thought hard about the workflow
of the production team… ..while we have been
developing the technology. We are making a radioshow much like the way
radioshows have always been made. There is not an awful amount of extra effort
going into it… ..but at the same time we are producing
contextual slides. The slides tell you who is speaking or
tweeting and about what. This is all provided in the background. The real innovation is that it is adding
nothing to the production team’s workflow. This broadcast was a proof of concept. We wanted to show how it is feasible. And we wanted to research what we can
add to a radio programme. The platform is not a turn-key solution. It is important to understand we are not
a manufacturer or seller of a solution. We have created the platform as open source. So it can be integrated by developers or
any consultant working for broadcasters. It also may be interesting
for platform manufacturers. These may wish to integrate these type of tools
or ideas in their production systems… ..to enable broadcasters to have
attractive hybrid radio in the future. If you would like to be among the first to test
this new technology: GET IN TOUCH!
