♪ [THEME MUSIC] ♪>>HELLO, I AM RONNIE ELDRIDGE, WELCOME TO “ELDRIDGE & COMPANY.” MANY OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY COLLEGES WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH OUR NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS. ONE IS THE CITY COLLEGE ACADEMY OF THE ARTS, A PUBLIC SCHOOL GRADE SIX THROUGH 12 AND CONNECTED TO CCNY. THAT IS WHERE DENNIS MIHALSKY CHANGED THE USUAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS CLASS INTO THE NEWSROOM OF A NEWSPAPER. I LOVE NEWSPAPERS AND I LOVE THIS STORY. WELCOME.>>THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.>>TELL ME ABOUT THE SCHOOL.>>IT IS CITY COLLEGE ACADEMY OF THE ARTS. IT’S IN INWOOD. WE ARE AN EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAM. A LOT OF THE STUDENTS STARTING IN THE NINTH GRADE CAN START GOING TO CITY COLLEGE AND EARNING COLLEGE CREDITS. SOME STUDENTS GRADUATE WITH 60 OR 70. IT IS AMAZING.>>IT IS A DISTRICT SCHOOL. AND THEN, IF YOU ARE FROM OUT OF THE DISTRICT, MAYBE YOU CAN GET INTO IT.>>WE HAVE A FEW FROM THE BRONX AND BROOKLYN WHO KNOW OF THE SCHOOL AND THE PARENTS REALLY WANT THEIR KIDS TO GO TO THE SCHOOL TO BE ABLE TO EARN THESE COLLEGE CREDITS.>>I AM SO ADMIRING OF PARENTS WHO CAN NAVIGATE THE SYSTEM TO FIND A SCHOOL.>>YES.>>IT’S, TOO MUCH RIGHT?>>EVEN AS A TEACHER I DO NOT KNOW HOW IT IS. IT IS A LITTLE COMPLICATED.>>BUT THESE ARE KIDS WHO CAN EARN 60 CREDITS TOWARDS GRADUATION, TO A BA, THEY DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE AN ENTRANCE EXAM OR ANYTHING.>>NO.>>IT’S AMAZING.>>THERE ARE REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO GO TO THE COLLEGE, BUT THAT IS THE REGENTS EXAM. WHATEVER THEIR SCORE IS FOR THAT. MOST OF THEM TAKE THE ELA REGENTS, WHICH IS AN ELEVENTH GRADE CLASS AND THEY TAKE IT IN THE NINTH GRADE OR EIGHTH GRADE AND THEY PASS IT.>>WHAT IS THE STUDENT BODY LIKE?>>WE HAVE ABOUT 600 STUDENTS MAINLY FROM THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, AND WE HAVE STUDENTS BORN IN NEW YORK AND ALSO WHO ARE FROM VARIOUS DIFFERENT AREAS. WE HAVE SOME YEMEN IMMIGRANTS, IMMIGRANTS FROM WEST AFRICA, MOROCCO, PLACES LIKE THAT.>>SO AMAZING. THESE ARE KIDS WHO SPEAK DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. WHAT PERCENTAGE DO YOU THINK ARE REALLY EASY WITH ENGLISH?>>A MAJORITY OF THEM ARE. I AM THE ENGLISH AS A NEW LANGUAGE TEACHER AND COORDINATOR. A LOT OF THEM KNOW ENGLISH VERY WELL. EVEN IF THEY NEED SOME SUPPORT WITH IT, I DO NOT NEED TO DO A LOT OF THE TRADITIONAL ESL STRATEGIES, MORE JUST HELPING THEM WITH FLUENCY AND WRITING.>>YOU TEACH MORE THAN THE NEWSPAPER.>>YES. I ALSO TEACH AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS CLASS, JUST A TRADITIONAL ONE, AS TRADITIONAL I CAN GET, AND A SPEECH AND DEBATE CLASS.>>IS THE PAPER A REGULAR CLASS? OR IS IT AN EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITY?>>CURRENTLY, IT IS A REGULAR CLASS, WHICH I THINK IS THE BEST WAY TO HAVE SOMETHING LIKE THIS AS A NEWSPAPER. LAST YEAR WHEN I STARTED, IT WAS MY PRINCIPAL WHO SAID THAT THIS IS GOING VERY WELL. THIS IS GOING TO BE THE NEWSPAPER.>>TELL ME WHAT IT IS LIKE. WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA?>>I WANTED TO DO A NEWSPAPER FOR MY ENGLISH CLASS LAST YEAR. I READ AND WATCH THE NEWS, SO I KNOW AS MUCH AS I CAN KNOW. A LOT OF MY STUDENTS DO NOT. EVEN WHEN I BRING UP- DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHO BERNIE SANDERS IS, THEY WOULDN’T KNOW WHO THAT IS. SO THEN I WAS LIKE, WE ARE GOING TO DO THIS NEWSPAPER AND THEN THEY WILL BE INTERACTING WITH THE NEWS INSTEAD OF THE TRADITIONAL MODEL OF ME TEACHING.>>NOT EVERY KID CAN TAKE THE CLASS, RIGHT?>>I WISH EVERY KID COULD, BECAUSE IT IS MY ONE CLASS WITH 34 STUDENTS EVERY YEAR. I DO GIVE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE NEWSPAPER IF THEY WANT TO. IF THEY WANT TO BE A COPY EDITOR, AND LAST YEAR A STUDENT FROM THE EIGHTH GRADE CAME AND SAID CAN I BE THE MOVIE REVIEWER. I SAID, IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, WE CAN DO THAT. HE DID ABOUT THREE REVIEWS. IT WAS FUN TO WATCH.>>YOU ARE NOT A NATIVE NEW YORKER?>>NO, I AM FROM CALIFORNIA.>>DID YOU HAVE A SCHOOL NEWSPAPER IN HIGH SCHOOL?>>I DID, AND THAT IS WHY I WANTED TO BRING A STUDENT NEWSPAPER TO MY SCHOOL, THE SCHOOL THAT I’M TEACHING AT, BECAUSE IN HIGH SCHOOL IT WAS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND ABOUT 3000 SOME STUDENTS THERE. BUT, THE NEWSPAPER WAS SO IMPORTANT TO THE STUDENT BODY AND THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. SO, JUST TO SEE MY NAME IN THE NEWSPAPER, OR MY FRIENDS WRITING FOR IT, OR AN ARTICLE ABOUT SOMETHING THAT WE DID, IT WAS EYE-OPENING AND INSPIRING TO SEE THAT. THE COMMUNITY ALSO WOULD CONTRIBUTE ADS. SO, KNEW STUFF THAT WAS GOING ON IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. I SAW THAT THERE WAS NOT SUCH A COMMUNITY OR COMMUNICATION AMONG EVERYONE, BECAUSE A LOT OF TEACHERS ARE IN THEIR ROOMS AND STUDENTS GO FROM CLASS TO CLASS. I WANTED TO BRING AS MUCH AS I COULD FROM MY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPER TO THIS COMMUNITY.>>A LOT OF THE KIDS REALLY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE WORLD, HUH? IT IS DISCOURAGING TO HEAR.>>ONLY ABOUT LOWER THAN 50% OF YOUTH EVEN TRUST LOCAL NEWS. 75% OF THEM GET IT FROM SOCIAL MEDIA.>>DID YOU SAY TRUST IT?>>YES. TRUST LOCAL NEWS.>>WHAT DO THEY WATCH IF THEY GET IT FROM TELEVISION?>>IT IS NEW YORK ONE OR THE LOCAL SPANISH CHANNEL THAT THEY WILL LISTEN TO. BUT, THAT IS BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS ARE WATCHING IT, SO THEY WALK BY AND THEY HEAR IT.>>THAT IS SO DISCOURAGING, ISN’T IT?>>A MAJORITY OF THEM GET THEIR NEWS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA OR FROM A CELEBRITY THAT POSTS A STORY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THEY ARE NOT GETTING THE WHOLE STORY, THEY ARE NOT GETTING THE BASICS OF WHAT YOU SHOULD BE KNOWING AS AN INFORMED CITIZEN. THAT IS WHY I REALLY WANTED TO GET THIS, SO THAT THEY CAN SEE THE EFFORT PUT INTO MAKING A NEWSPAPER, AND THEN THE ABLE TO START READING THE NEWS AND SEEING –>>AND THE PRINCIPAL ENCOURAGED YOUR IDEA. THEY LIKED IT.>>YES. SHE LOVED THE IDEA.>>AND IT HAS ENCOURAGED YOU TO GO ON TO OTHER SCHOOLS. BEFORE WE GET TO THAT, IS THERE EVER A CHANCE IT WOULD BE A EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY THAT A LOT OF KIDS WOULD JOIN?>>IT COULD BE SOMETHING WHERE IT COULD ALSO BE AN EXTRACURRICULAR AFTER SCHOOL SO MORE STUDENTS CAN BE INVOLVED. I HAVE A SPEECH AND DEBATE CLASS AND A DEBATE TEAM. SO THE SPEECH AND DEBATE CLASS IS FIVE DAYS A WEEK DURING THE SCHOOL DAY AND THE DEBATE TEAM IS AFTER SCHOOL SO THE KIDS WILL BE GOING BACK AND FORTH.>>YOU ARE GETTING KIDS INTERESTED IN THE NEWS IN MORE THAN ONE PLACE.>>IN THE DEBATE CLASS THEY HAVE TO DEBATE — I BRING UP THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF DEBATE, SO THEY COME OUT WITH THESE TOPICS THAT ARE RELEVANT TO WHAT IS GOING ON, SO THEY NEED TO DO RESEARCH AND FIND OUT AND IT’S REALLY FUN TO WATCH THEM.>>THEY DEBATE EACH OTHER, THEY DO NOT TRAVEL?>>THERE IS A DEBATE LEAGUE BUT IN MY SCHOOL WE DO IT IN THE CLASS AND THEY ARE DEBATING AND GETTING VERY HEATED ABOUT THESE TOPICS THAT I NEVER WOULD’VE THOUGHT THEY WOULD HAVE HEATED ABOUT.>>HOW DO THEY BECOME THE STAFF OF A NEWSPAPER? WHO IS THE EDITOR, HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN? IS THERE AN EDITORIAL BOARD? DO YOU DO EDITORIALS? DO YOU TAKE INVESTIGATIVE KIND OF STUFF? WHAT DO YOU DO?>>WE FIRST GIVE THEM ALL THE OPTIONS THAT THEY HAVE. I ALSO SAY THAT THEY CAN ADD ON TO ANY OF THE POSITIONS IF THEY DO NOT SEE A POSITION THAT THEY REALLY LIKE. I WILL TELL THEM THAT THERE IS THE EDITOR IN CHIEF, ASSOCIATE EDITOR, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, BUSINESS MANAGER, AND THEN WE HAVE DIFFERENT SECTIONS WITHIN SO THEN THE FIRST CLASS THEY GOT TO CHOOSE THE NAME, OF THE WHOLE NEWSPAPER, WHICH IS “THE CLAW WEEKLY.” I WAS LIKE, IT IS YOUR NEWSPAPER WHAT DO YOU WANT TO NAME IT, AND THEY VOTED ON THAT. AND THEN THEY HAVE THE NEWS SECTION, THE DOSE, THE FASHION SECTION IS THE DRIP. WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT THEIR FASHION IT IS THE DRIP.>>THE BOYS ARE AS INTERESTED AS THE GIRLS?>>AND THEN WE HAVE THE GOSSIP, EDITORIAL TYPE. AND THEN THE CLUTCH, THE SPORTS SECTION. IT IS INTERESTING BECAUSE GIRLS, YOU DO NOT REALLY — THE BOYS ARE WANTING TO BE ON THE DRIP, SO THERE IS NO –>>NOT A SEXIST THING.>>THEY ARE ALL WANTING TO CONTRIBUTE TO ALL OF THE DIFFERENT SECTIONS.>>WHAT DOES IT INSTILLS?>>A SENSE OF SELF WORTH. THEY SEE THEIR NAME IN THE NEWSPAPER WHEN IT IS PUBLISHED, AND IT ALSO GIVES THEM THE PROFESSIONAL SKILLS WHEN THEY LEAVE HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE OF HOW A HIERARCHY WORKS. IT ALSO GIVES THEM A SENSE OF PROACTIVE BEHAVIOR. I TELL THEM THAT THERE IS A DEADLINE, AND IF THEY DO NOT MEET THE DEADLINE IT WILL NOT BE IN THE NEWSPAPER, BUT I WILL STILL GIVE YOU A GRADE. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE GRADE. THEY CARE ABOUT SEEING THE STORY IN THE NEWSPAPER. IT IS REALLY GREAT TO SEE THAT THEY WOULD RATHER JUST BE IN THE NEWSPAPER.>>DO THEY EDIT IT, OR DO YOU?>>THEY EDIT IT. SO THEY HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS. THEY HAVE TO PITCH THE IDEA TO THE EDITOR, THE EDITOR PITCHES IT TO THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, THEY GIVE APPROVAL AND THEN IT GOES TO ME.>>YOU HEAR SO MUCH ABOUT THE INABILITY OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES TO WRITE ANYTHING. WHAT HAPPENS THERE?>>I THINK THAT IT IS A MIX. ONE, THE STANDARDS HAVE BEEN VERY FOCUSED ON JUST ONE FORM OF WRITING, WHICH IS TYPICALLY ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING BUT DOES NOT REALLY GIVE THEM OTHER OPTIONS OF CREATIVE AND THINGS LIKE THAT BECAUSE SOME STUDENTS ARE NOT GOING TO BE GOOD ARGUMENTATIVE WRITERS, BUT THEY WOULD BE VERY GOOD CREATIVE WRITERS. WITH POETRY, AND JOURNALISM AS WELL. THAT IS ONE OF THEM. ALSO THE TESTING ASPECT WHERE THERE IS SO MUCH TESTING AND IT IS BUBBLING IN. AND IT IS NOT DOING A LOT OF THE WRITING.>>SO IT’S A RELIEF FOR THEM TO GET TO THE NEWSPAPER.>>IT GIVES THEM A LITTLE MORE FREEDOM.>>SOME PLACE I READ ABOUT YOU IS THAT YOU ENCOURAGE REBELLION OR HOW TO HANDLE AUTHORITY.>>I ENCOURAGE MY KIDS TO QUESTION ANYTHING. EVEN QUESTION ME. IN THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS I WILL DO THINGS THAT THEY WILL LISTEN AND GO ABOUT DOING IT, AND THEN I WILL TELL THEM, WHY WERE YOU LISTEN TO ME? THEY SAY I AM THE TEACHER. THEN I SAY, JUST BECAUSE I’M THE TEACHER YOU SHOULD STILL QUESTION. IT DOES COME BACK TO ME AT THE END OF THE YEAR WHEN THEY’RE ALL QUESTIONING EVERY LITTLE THING THAT I’M DOING, BUT THEN THEY START DOING THAT IN THEIR DAILY LIVES WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT I WILL — I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS POLICY AND WHAT IS GOING ON, CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THIS? BUT I WILL ENCOURAGE THEM TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES, AND THEN IF THEY DO DISAGREE WITH A POLICY, WILL LET US PUT IT IN THE NEWSPAPER AND GET SOME PEOPLE –>>WHAT DO THEIR PARENTS HAVE TO SAY?>>THEIR PARENTS LOVE IT. A LOT OF PARENTS COME IN, BRING A COPY OR GIVE THEM A COPY, AND THEY ARE SO EXCITED AND PROUD TO SEE THAT THEIR CHILD’S NAME IS IN THE BYLINES. THE PARENTS LOVE IT AND IT GIVES THEM AN IDEA OF WHAT IS GOING ON INSIDE THE SCHOOL FROM A YOUTH PERSPECTIVE.>>DOES IT CHANGE THE PARENTS’ VIEW OF AUTHORITY?>>I DO NOT THINK SO. THERE IS A SENSE OF RESPECT AUTHORITY AND DO NOT QUESTION IT TOO MUCH. I THINK WITH TEENAGERS THEY ALREADY HAVE THE SENSE OF WANTING TO CHALLENGE EVERYTHING, SO HEARING AN AUTHORITY FIGURE SAYING QUESTION IT, THEY WILL DO IT.>>YOU GOT A MASTERS DEGREE FROM CITY COLLEGE.>>I DID, IN 2016.>>DID THAT PROPEL YOU TO THIS PARTICULAR SCHOOL?>>I DID THE NEW YORK CITY TEACHING FELLOWSHIP –>>WHICH IS WHAT?>>IT IS THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO GET PEOPLE WHO DID NOT ORIGINALLY WANT TO BECOME TEACHERS, SO IT HAS A LOT OF CAREER CHANGERS. SO, THEY HAVE THE AGE RANGE A LITTLE BIT HIGHER BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT REALLY WANTING PEOPLE RIGHT FROM EDUCATION SCHOOL.>>WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE?>>I WAS DOING PUBLIC RELATIONS BEFORE THAT.>>YOU WERE COMMUNICATING.>>YES. AND, THE ONE THING IS THAT IT GAVE ME AN ABILITY FOR THIS NEWSPAPER TO TELL THEM HOW IT WORKS FOR BUSINESSES IN THE COMMUNICATION WITH THESE JOURNALISTS AND RELATIONSHIPS THAT ARE BUILT. SO, EVEN WITH THE CONTACTS, I BROUGHT MANHATTAN BOROUGH PRESIDENT GALE BREWER TO SPEAK TO THE KIDS. I HAD A FORMER REPORTER FOR THE NEW YORK POST SPEAK TO THEM. I HAD AN ACTOR ON “13 REASONS WHY” SPEAK AND TALK ABOUT THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MEDIA AND THE IMPORTANCE OF MEDIA LITERACY AND WHAT THEY’RE DOING.>>YOU CAME FROM CALIFORNIA. WERE YOU ALWAYS INTERESTED IN THE THINGS YOU ARE NOW?>>I ALWAYS WAS. I ORIGINALLY CAME TO NEW YORK BECAUSE I WANTED TO BE SOMETHING AT THE UNITED NATIONS. I WANTED TO BE AN INTERPRETER, SO I GOT INVOLVED IN THAT WAY, AND I INTERNED FOR –>>WHAT LANGUAGES?>>FRENCH AND ITALIAN. AND THEN I TOOK MY FIRST FRENCH CLASS AND IT WAS REALLY DIFFICULT THAT IS WHEN I SWITCHED OVER.>>THAT HAPPENS TO ME TOO.>>I WAS LIKE, WE’RE READING LITERATURE NOW, THIS A LITTLE BIT MUCH.>>WAS YOUR FAMILY INTERESTED IN THE COMMUNITY AND POLITICS?>>MY DAD WAS INTERESTED IN POLITICS, HE WAS ALWAYS WATCHING THE NEWS, KEEPING ME UP TO DATE, AND MY MOM WAS INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY, THE SCHOOLS THAT WE WENT TO.>>YOU HAD THAT ADVANTAGE, WHICH SOME OF YOUR KIDS DO NOT HAVE.>>EXACTLY.>>A VERY INTERESTING KIND OF THING. I ALWAYS LIKE TO KNOW WHERE SOMEDAY COMES FROM AND HOW THEY LOOK AT THE WORLD. NOW, YOU ARE EMBARKED ON A CAMPAIGN NOW THAT YOU HAVE SEEN HOW SUCCESSFUL THIS NEWSPAPER IS. I WENT TO THE HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC AND ART BEFORE IT MIXED IN TO BECOME LAGUARDIA AND IT WAS A VERY REBELLIOUS SCHOOL. [LAUGHTER] IT WAS A WONDERFUL SCHOOL. WE HAD A VERY ACTIVE NEWSPAPER CALLED “OVERTONE,” WHICH I THINK THEY MAY STILL HAVE IT. AND THE EDITOR OF THAT WENT TO COLLEGE WHERE HE BECAME THE EDITOR OF “THE COLUMBIA SPECTATOR,” AND EVENTUALLY THE EDITOR OF “THE NEW YORK TIMES.” IT WAS AN EXPERIENCE THAT WAS INCREDIBLE. I ALWAYS FOUND THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED ON THE PAPER, AND THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED ON THE COLLEGE NEWSPAPER, A LOT WENT INTO THAT PROFESSION. OF COURSE IN THOSE DAYS IT WAS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT THING. IT IS VERY EXCITING.>>YES. NOW THE ORGANIZATION IS CALLED STUDENTS DISRUPTING, AND WE ARE EMBARKING TO ADVOCATE AND SUPPORT STUDENTS NEWSPAPERS IN ALL NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.>>HOW MANY SCHOOLS HAVE IT?>>OUT OF 1800, ONLY 200 HAVE THAT. MANY OF THEM, I HAVE SPOKEN TO OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS WHO SAY THAT THEY THINK THE NUMBER IS EVEN LOWER NOW. SO, THAT IS WHY WHEN I SAW THAT, WHILE I WAS DOING MY NEWSPAPER, THAT IS WHEN I THOUGHT WE HAVE TO BE BRINGING THIS TO MORE SCHOOLS.>>DOES CITY COLLEGE HAVE A NEWSPAPER?>>THEY DO. YES.>>AN ACTIVE ONE?>>YES.>>DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY COLLEGES IN THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM HAVE ONE?>>THERE ARE A LOT OF COLLEGES THAT DO HAVE THEM, EVEN IF IT IS ONLINE. THEY DO HAVE AN ACTIVE NEWSPAPER.>>AND THEY HAVE A VERY GOOD GRADUATE SCHOOL NOW.>>YES. ABSOLUTELY. IT IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS WHERE COLLEGES CONTINUE THAT TRADITION, SOMETHING HAS SWITCHED WHERE IT IS NOT A BIG FOCUS FOR SCHOOLS TO HAVE STUDENT NEWSPAPERS.>>HOW DO YOU HAVE TO GO ABOUT IT? DO YOU FIND A TEACHER WHO WANTS TO DO IT?>>YOU PROBABLY NEED TO HAVE A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH BECAUSE AT FIRST, WE ARE IN THE PHASE OF INFORMING PEOPLE –>>WHO IS WE?>>ME AND THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF MY ORGANIZATION WHO ARE TRYING TO –>>ARE THERE STUDENTS ON IT?>>NO STUDENTS ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, BUT THERE ARE STUDENTS WORKING ON OUR BLOG THAT WE HAVE CALLED STUDENT’S FIRST JOURNAL. THEY ARE WORKING WITH US ON THAT AS WELL. WE ARE TRYING TO INFORM PEOPLE OF THE FACT THAT THERE ARE NOT A LOT OF STUDENT NEWSPAPERS BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK I HAD ONE, YEARBOOK STILL HAPPEN, THERE MUST BE NEWSPAPERS STILL HAPPENING. IT IS NOW JUST THE FACT OF INFORMING PEOPLE THAT THAT IS NOT THE CASE.>>AND THE BLOG?>>THE BLOG IS RUN BY THE STUDENTS AND THEY WRITE ABOUT –>>FROM YOUR SCHOOL?>>A LOT OF THEM ARE FORMER STUDENTS OF MINE. THEY GO TO COLLEGE NOW. ONE IS AT NYU AND ANOTHER IS AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY. I HAVE THEM WRITE WHAT THEY WANT TO WRITE ABOUT FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE AND A LOT OF THEM HAVE DIFFERENT IDEAS. SOME OF THEM LIKE TALKING ABOUT TRANSPORTATION, OTHERS LIKE TALKING ABOUT HOW SHE CAME FROM A SCHOOL THAT WAS MAINLY DOMINICAN AND THEN WENT TO HOWARD UNIVERSITY AND REALLY LEARNED A LOT ABOUT HOW SHE WAS NOT DOMINICAN AND SHE’S NOW VERY CONFIDENT.>>SO INTERESTING. SO THE OUTREACH, ARE YOU GETTING HELP FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION?>>RIGHT NOW WE ARE DOING IT GRASSROOTS. IT WILL BE THROUGH FINDING THE TEACHERS IN SCHOOLS WHO WANT TO BE ABLE TO DO A STUDENT NEWSPAPER.>>CAN YOU DO THAT THROUGH THE UFD?>>IT IS SUPPORTIVE OF WHAT WE ARE DOING, BUT WE ARE GOING TO BE GOING THROUGH JUST FRIENDS WHO KNOW FRIENDS WHO WORK AT DIFFERENT SCHOOLS, AND BE ABLE TO PICK OUT A COUPLE IN EACH BOROUGH, BECAUSE I WANT TO ENSURE THAT EVERY BOROUGH IS REPRESENTED, ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT ARE UNDERREPRESENTED.>>HOW IS THE EDITOR CHOSEN?>>THEY APPLY FOR THE POSITION ON AN ACTUAL JOB APPLICATION. THEY GIVE US A FEW IDEAS OF WHAT THEY WILL DO, AND THEN WE INTERVIEW THEM AND ME AND MY CO-TEACHER ARE THE PUBLISHERS. SO WE HOLD A FORMAL INTERVIEW WHERE WE SHAKE HANDS AND TALK TO THEM ABOUT WHAT THEIR JOB WILL ENTAIL AND WHAT THEY WILL BRING TO THE PAPER. USUALLY, THIS YEAR, JUST LAST WEEK THE STUDENTS DID HAVE LIKE FIVE WHO WERE REALLY WANTING TO BE THE HEAD OF THE NEWSPAPER. THAT WILL BE A DIFFICULT ONE BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL GOOD AND NATURAL LEADERS. IT WILL BEE WHO WILL BE THE MOST PROACTIVE.>>AND THAT’S SUCH GREAT TRAINING TOO OR DEVELOPMENT AND OPPORTUNITY.>>IN THE INTERVIEWS WE REMIND THEM THAT THIS WILL BE WHAT YOU DO IN A REAL INTERVIEW. DON’T GET DOWN ON YOURSELF IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER. TALK ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE, OR SAY YOU DO NOT KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT OR THINGS LIKE THAT. THE MAIN GOAL OF THE NEWSPAPER FROM THE VERY START TO THE PUBLISHING AND DISTRIBUTING, IS TO GIVE THEM THE SKILLS THAT WILL CARRY ON AFTER SCHOOL.>>THAT IS SO INCREDIBLE KIND OF PROGRAM. ARE YOU ALWAYS GOING TO BE A TEACHER?>>I WILL ALWAYS BE IN EDUCATION AS MUCH AS I CAN, ESPECIALLY, IT IS MY FOURTH YEAR AS A TEACHER. IT IS NOT WORK FOR ME, I ENJOY IT. I AM EXCITED TO GO TO WORK.>>WHAT PERCENTAGE OF THE STUDENTS GO ON TO COLLEGE?>>AT MY SCHOOL WE HAVE A 99% THAT GO. WE HAVE A GUIDANCE COUNSELOR WHO IS LIKE THE FAIRY GODMOTHER, BECAUSE SHE GOES TO THEM AND FINDS OUT WHAT THEY’RE GOOD AT AND SHE FINDS THE SCHOOL RIGHT FOR THEM.>>THAT IS AN AMAZING RECORD. AND THEY ARE ALL CURIOUS?>>THEY ARE ALL CURIOUS. THEY ALL KNOW WHAT COLLEGE THEY WANT TO GO TO, THEY ARE ALREADY EMAILING ME ABOUT VOLUNTEERING FOR ME AND STAYING ON THE NEWSPAPER AND THINGS LIKE THAT.>>LET US GO BACK TO THE WEBSITE OF YOUR ORGANIZATION. IT’S CALLED WHAT?>>STUDENTSDISRUPTING.ORG>>THAT IS VERY ENCOURAGING ISN’T IT?>>[LAUGHING] YES. YES.>>AND THAT IS ONLINE. BUT THE NEWSPAPER IS A REAL NEWSPAPER?>>IT IS PAPER NEWSPAPER.>>AND IT IS ALSO ONLINE?>>NOT RIGHT NOW. OUR GOAL IS TO BE ABLE TO BRING IT ONLINE.>>BETTER NOT TO PUT IT ONLINE. IT MAKES THEM READ IT.>>THE ONE THING I HAVE SEEN IS THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY WOULD THEY BE MORE INTERESTED ONLINE NEWS BUT IT HAS BEEN THE OPPOSITE WHERE DISTRIBUTION DAY PUBLICATION DAY–>>BECAUSE YOU SEE YOUR NAME IN PRINT.>>IT IS SO FUN FOR THE KIDS PASS IT OUT AND I SEE A GROUP OF STUDENTS SITTING AND READING THE NEWSPAPER AND POINTING OUT THEIR FRIEND IN IT.>>IT IS WONDERFUL TO TALK TO YOU BECAUSE OF YOUR ENTHUSIASM AND CREATIVITY. IT IS TERRIFIC. YOU SHOULD BE THE NUMBER ONE TEACHER.>>OH WELL, I WOULD LOVE THAT!>>WE HOPE THAT SOME OF THE VIEWERS WILL CONTACT YOU, HOPEFULLY THEY ARE TEACHERS IN SCHOOLS THAT DON’T HAVE A NEWSPAPER.>>WE HAVE A FUNDRAISER ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 AT THE SEAPORT MUSEUM. WE ARE REALLY TRYING TO JUST SHOW THAT THERE IS A LOT OF SUPPORT OUT THERE AND GALE BREWER WILL BE OUR SPECIAL GUEST.>>GOOD FOR YOU. CONGRATULATIONS, AND MUCH SUCCESS TO YOU.>>THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.>>THANK YOU FOR COMING. ♪ [THEME MUSIC] ♪
