CWA union workers on strike against AT&T in the southeast

MARY: –>>WHEN WE GET TO THE
TABLE WE’LL WORK OUT ALL THE
DIFFERENCES. MARY: THAT’S THE GOAL OF THESE
STRIKES HERE IN ALABAMA. COMMUNICATIONS WORKERS OF
AMERICA MEMBERS AT ATT SOUTHEA
ARE FIGHTING AGAINST WHAT THEY
CALL UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES BY
MANAGEMENT DURING NEGOTIATIONS
FOR A NEW CONTRACT. STEVE MONK IS A LOCAL UNION
PRESIDENT.>>WE CAN’T GET ANYWHERE. MARY: CWA SAYS IT FILED AN
UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE CHARGE
AGAINST AT&T FOR NOT BARGAINING
IN GOOD FAITH, AND NOT SENDING
REPRESENTATIVES TO THE TABLE
WITH THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE DECISIONS. STRIKES ARE PLANNED IN NINE
STATES ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST,
INCLUDING ALABAMA, INVOLVING
MORE THAN 20,000 WORKERS. WE FOUND WORKERS IN GARDENDALE
AND ALONG HIGHWAY 280. PEOPLE PLAN TO STRIKE NOT ONLY
TODAY BUT IN THE COMING DAYS
UNTIL THEY SAY AT&T DECIDES TO
NEGOTIATE IN GOOD FAITH. AT&T SENT US A STATEMENT READING
IN PART, A STRIKE IS IN NO ONE’S
BEST INTEREST, AND WE REMAIN
READY TO SIT DOWN WITH UNION
LEADERS TO LISTEN TO THEIR
CONCERNS. AT&T ALSO SAYS IT’S OFFERED THE
UNION TERMS CONSISTENT WITH WHAT
OTHER CWA-REPRESENTED EMPLOYEES
HAVE APPROVED IN RECENT CONTRACT
NEGOTIATIONS.>>THE LONGER WE STAY OUT HERE
THE MORE THEY’RE GOING TO SEE
SERVICE INTERRUPTED. MARY: ALL AS THE QUESTION
REMAINS, WHAT IT MEANS FOR
CUSTOMERS CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE
IN GARDENDALE, MARY O’CONNELL,
