Could there be a second Brexit vote? – BBC News

the brexit debate has dominated
everything in politics over the last couple of years
what if Parliament decided it doesn’t necessarily need to happen could you
guys get another vote not another one well possibly to be honest there isn’t
an easy answer but let’s talk through the politics and some of the
possibilities firstly the Prime Minister has always said she won’t hold one she
is a plan she’s trying to get backing for at the moment but what if she can’t
get enough support in Parliament it will either be more uncertainty more division
or it could risk no brexit at all yup you heard that no brexit at all
there are a bunch of campaigners who have been saying this for a while
whenever we know what Brexit is going to look like
let’s ask people if they still want it but the idea has been picking up more
and more traction labour says it could be an option although their position
hasn’t always been clear they’d much prefer a general election our preference
would be for a general election we can negotiate our future relationships with
Europe but some Labour MPs are fighting hard to make another referendum happen
now listen to this from the Shadow Chancellor
yes we’ve kept on the option on the table of a another referendum of sorts
it’s not just about labour the SNP have said they would back another vote on
Brexit in the way of a second referendum the so-called people’s vote I think the
SNP MPs would undoubtedly vote for it would that’s a very important moment so if and it’s still a
big if labour were to back it and opposition parties got on site a few Tory rebels –
it’s possible the idea of another referendum could have a majority in
parliament the question then is where their MPs could force the government to
hold one okay rewind a second remember there’s no guarantee we’ll get to this
stage but if we did get there that would need to be legislation in Parliament
that would take weeks and making a vote happen, before we officially leave might not be possible and even if all that did happen
what would the options be the PM’s deal no deal calling the whole thing off
so is it possible yes but there are a lot of hurdles and almost nothing in
politics at the moment is certain

  • As if you needed another reason not to watch any of the BBC's products.

As an individual, I stopped watching this extremely biased channel years ago.

The licence fee urgently needs to be scrapped, the BBC needs to stand on its own two feet in the market, where either it will wither and die, or realize it needs to stop ramming politically correct nonsense down people's throats, and actually make entertaining programme's, and neutral reporting/ current affairs programme's.

I voted Brexit… what a joke the way it’s been handled I think if we don’t have a brexiter running the show what chance do we have… not a fan of another Vote
But if we do have one there should be three choices…1 stay 2 take chequers deal 3 tell them to stick it and walk away

  • A final say on the deal is fine if the referendum is a choice between May's deal or no deal. What we don't want is another vote on whether to stay in the EU or not, we've already had one and voted to leave – that should be the end of it.

  • Waaahh, but the voters were lied to… Waaahh..
Yes they were lied to when they were told Common Market would lead to manufacturing boom. (It actually resulted in biggest de-industrialisation in the world.)
They were lied to again when they were told joining wouldn't affect sovereignty. They weren't even asked about Maastricht or Lisbon, but when they finally were they voted out.
Now, true to form the anti-democrats want to ignore something that didn't go their way. Then they wonder why no-one likes their Eurovisions.

  • I could see one happening but it would be a travesty at this point. There could have been a second vote built in, but for people who say their only reason to have one is to overturn the previous vote that they lost is not democratic.

To have one to sort something out at this point looks ridiculous. There is no question or combination of questions that will make any sense. All directions have uncertainty built into them so to pit a relatively fleshed out future against one like remain that has only had starry eyed expressions of support for the last few years is not going to work. There isn't any reasonable number of questions you could put on a ballot. To put more than two on the ballot pretty much ensures a hung result. The only rational ballot would be the May deal versus crashing out. That leaves remainers out, even though the May deal is sorta remain. And the May deal is so insane nobody should put it on a ballot.

  • Brexit Countdown says:

Forget another vote UK. You had your say, you knew what you voted for and proof of this are the vote trends. If they didn't know what they voted for there would have been a uniform distribution of percentages across the country. UK should leave the EU once and for all and take with it is imperialistic mentality, veto rights, funds rebates, pound Sterling and all the other preferential crap it enjoyed as an EU member. Really counting the days for March '19!!!

  • Is the uk considered a Democratic country still? If the brexit vote is not followed through, why should anyone believe any votes matter at all?

  • Rule Britannia……….. Britain never never never will be slaves. The referendum was about Independence, taking back control and leaving the institutions it wasn't about a trade deal
    Leave means leave
No deals better than a bad deal. The people have spoken its enshrined in law we leave March 29. its in the Tory manifesto. WTO deal gives us a clean break and 39 billion quid back in our pocket. WTO is better economically a lot of things will be cheaper and we can do tariff free deals if we want.8% of businesses trade with the EU the rest are saddled with their rules and regulations. Democracy is dead if we don't now do what we voted for. If Ukip campaign on taking us out of the EU at the next election they ll have my vote

  • Remainers…..bright sparks who want to make themselves a minority in their own country so they can have a few quid in their pocket in the short term, an continue to live their materialistic lives. Admirable if it's sustainable, it's not. Minority's are oppresed in any society. You think staying in the EU will be good for children an their grand children? Best tell them to keep their heads down when the oppresed become their oppresers. The demographical change has already brought more terrorism, crime, and sexual assaults on a scale we have never experienced before. Proof is the pudding, but these greedy PC short termists libtards can't see past their nose. That's ok though you go against commomsense an empower them a bit more by campaigning to stay in the EU. Absolute fools these remainers, trencherous people.

  • What is going on. Reading the comets below it looks like the people of this great nation are fighting against each other (with words) trying to debate if the enemy is the EU or not. Looks like the enemy is the one half who think differently to the other half of the same British nation.

  • bigfrog Australia says:

So if the outcome is not what a minority wanted, lets make brexit so difficult and fear monger for over a year and have another referendum and hopefully we have scared enough people to vote stay. Despicable.

  • No … we had "The Vote" which categorically must be honoured we shall leave. No ifs no buts we are leaving.
But the media should stop eroding democracy by implying the UK have changed their mind. Not only are you eroding democracy …. as the comments below show …. you are eroding opinion on finacial support you receive via license fees. No one cares where they get their programmes from as long as they get some. If the BBC fell it would be chip paper by the afternoon. So …. read the room guys you aren't liked you certainly aren't respected and blankly put you are another tax which most would happily see the back of. So tread carefully BBC …. the ice beneath you could not be thinner 😕

  • How did we ever manage before we joined the EU???…. it must have been a miracle!!!!… oh that's right…. we had the common market.
The EU was only created to apparently stabilise the counties, post WW2, to prevent more wars.
Now Ironically the EU dictatorship is at risk of creating ill feeling itself!.
The only people making leaving the EU difficult, is the government, who at the end of the day, do not want to leave. They hope to create smoke and mirrors to scare the public by Bias propoganda media reporting and then appear to HELP us by hinting at a 2nd referendums.
    What a shower of shite!!!…
We are the British people… . Do they think we are stupid?…..
Do they think we would stand for this betrayal?…..
I think it's time they had a reality check, before people power shows its hand…

  • Could there be? There should be!! The British people were misled and lied to by the likes of Nigel Frogface Fraudage and BoJo over what leaving Europe would mean. If there isn't a second referendum, then it's time for a General Election with each party clearly stating their position on being in and/or out of Europe.

  • I feel disgusted with Parliament and the undemocratic remainers. May is determined to put forward a deal she knows will be rejected. This can then be used as an excuse for what they call a 'people's vote.'

  • Isn't it funny how nearly all of those who kept calling the BBC biased turn out to be getting their views from unabashedly biased right wing sources, some of who I wouldn't trust as far as I could throw them. It's very much a case of be careful what you wish for, unless you really want everyone to be totally at the mercy of corporate lobbies and their disinformation campaigns.

What I would say is that in the last 3 years its become extremely noticeable that the Beeb has become absolutely obsessed with PC race, gender and identity politics – to the extent that it looks as though they've been taken over by some cabal somewhere deep in the bowels of Television Centre who believe those things must pervade absolutely everything, even to the extent of becoming the primary objective. That said, the BBC is such a broad church that still pursues high quality, objective news journalism of a standard matched consistently by precious few others. Overall, they're much farther removed from being out-and-out centred at its core on disseminating propaganda like certain news organisations I could mention. If the day ever comes when they really have been turned into an outright propaganda channel then it would be time to abolish the license fee,but as a whole that is still a long, long way from being the case.

  • William Wallace says:

A second vote is NOT democratic. When you've voted for something, it's not democratic to have another vote before you've implemented the thing that you voted for in the first place. LEAVE means LEAVE !

  • Taken from Mo…

NOW THESE ARE REAL FACTS. So after you read them all tell me your honest opinion should we stay or should we go. Cadbury moved factory to Poland 2011 with EU grant.
Ford Transit moved to Turkey 2013 with EU grant.
Jaguar Land Rover has recently agreed to build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata, the same company who have trashed our steel works and emptied the workers pension funds.
Peugeot closed its Ryton (was Rootes Group) plant and moved production to Slovakia with EU grant.
British Army's new Ajax fighting vehicles to be built in SPAIN using SWEDISH steel at the request of the EU to support jobs in Spain with EU grant, rather than Wales.
Dyson gone to Malaysia, with an EU loan.
Crown Closures, Bournemouth (Was METAL BOX), gone to Poland with EU grant, once employed 1,200.
M&S manufacturing gone to far east with EU loan.
Hornby models gone. In fact all toys and models now gone from UK along with the patents all with with EU grants.
Gillette gone to eastern Europe with EU grant.
Texas Instruments Greenock gone to Germany with EU grant.
Indesit at Bodelwyddan Wales gone with EU grant.
Sekisui Alveo said production at its Merthyr Tydfil Industrial Park foam plant will relocate production to Roermond in the Netherlands, with EU funding.
Hoover Merthyr factory moved out of UK to Czech Republic and the Far East by Italian company Candy with EU backing.
ICI integration into Holland’s AkzoNobel with EU bank loan and within days of the merger, several factories in the UK, were closed, eliminating 3,500 jobs
Boots sold to Italians Stefano Pessina who have based their HQ in Switzerland to avoid tax to the tune of £80 million a year, using an EU loan for the purchase.
JDS Uniphase run by two Dutch men, bought up companies in the UK with £20 million in EU 'regeneration' grants, created a pollution nightmare and just closed it all down leaving 1,200 out of work and an environmental clean-up paid for by the UK tax-payer. They also raided the pension fund and drained it dry.
UK airports are owned by a Spanish company.
Scottish Power is owned by a Spanish company.
Most London buses are run by Spanish and German companies.
The Hinkley Point C nuclear power station to be built by French company EDF, part owned by the French government, using cheap Chinese steel that has catastrophically failed in other nuclear installations. Now EDF say the costs will be double or more and it will be very late even if it does come online.
Swindon was once our producer of rail locomotives and rolling stock. Not any more, it's Bombardier in Derby and due to their losses in the aviation market, that could see the end of the British railways manufacturing altogether even though Bombardier had EU grants to keep Derby going which they diverted to their loss-making aviation side in Canada.
39% of British invention patents have been passed to foreign companies, many of them in the EU
The Mini cars that Cameron stood in front of as an example of British engineering, are built by BMW mostly in Holland and Austria. His campaign bus was made in Germany even though we have Plaxton, Optare, Bluebird, Dennis etc., in the UK. The bicycle for the Greens was made in the far east, not by Raleigh UK but then they are probably going to move to the Netherlands too as they have said recently.

Anyone who thinks the EU is good for British industry or any other business simply hasn't paid attention to what has been systematically asset-stripped from the UK. Name me one major technology company still running in the UK, I used to contract out to many, then the work just dried up as they were sold off to companies from France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, etc., and now we don't even teach electronic technology for technicians any more, due to EU regulations.

I haven't detailed our non-existent fishing industry the EU paid to destroy, nor the farmers being paid NOT to produce food they could sell for more than they get paid to do nothing, don't even go there.
I haven't mentioned what it costs us to be asset-stripped like this, nor have I mentioned immigration, nor the risk to our security if control of our armed forces is passed to Brussels or Germany.
Find something that's gone the other way, I've looked and I just can't. If you think the EU is a good idea,
1/ You haven't read the party manifesto of The European Peoples' Party.
2/ You haven't had to deal with EU petty bureaucracy tearing your business down.
3/ You don't think it matters.

OUT OF EUROPE we need to be out of it . And we need OUT NOW…

  • Wheres the creation that made this once great nation? Wheres the can do spirit? Are we truly led to believe that the day after brexit the world would say to hell with Britain? Really?
Isnt the' truth' politics is the paid arm of corporate globalisation, agendas aplenty in a melee of created problems..

  • Fake news where is the Tommy march video and why do you remove the comment section when you put Tommy Robinson videos on. And I want a replay of the England match in the World Cup and I want another car 😂🤣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

  • No Brexit at all? I think you mean no deal. If you want to have another vote that's ok, I'm all for democracy. It would have to be after the EU referendum result has been implemented though.

  • Why the British PM May is so stubborn like a donkey in case of second referendum? In 2016 UK voters didn't know the consequences of brexit, and its protagonists like Farage showed false perspective of it. Now the UK nation has much broader knowledge of it and it justifies second referendum. She is denying the people right to vote arguing that it would be against democracy. In fact her persistent denying of second referendum is against democracy.

  • Liberals in USA: we won popular vote, electoral college is fascism

Liberals is UK: popular vote was a mistake lets try one more time

  • A second vote tells the British people that democracy does not exist. Period. Go down this road if you think you can, but the consequences shall be massive. Free, sovereign people expect their representatives to honour their "honouring the outcome".

  • You know, there sure are a lot of comments determined to be angry about this report. Look back at the report and note that it doesn't advocate anything, you wouldn't think it looking at a lot of these comments.

Makes you wonder how many of them are genuine rather than engineered to make you angry and stupid.

  • I don’t understand everyone saying a second referendum would be a betrayal to the people and to democracy!! the first referendum, people weren’t as educated about what brexit would entail as they are now, and that’s ok, but since we and the government (I hope) are smart enough to realise that now, and have a better grasp of what it actually means, a second referendum is the only thing that doesn’t betray the rights of people, considering how much has changed. Either way, a second referendum would never be a “betrayal to the people” since it would result in parliament and the government acting on what the majority want.

  • A second referendum would never be a “betrayal to the people” since it would result in parliament and the government acting on what the majority want – I’m sure that parliament realises that people’s minds have changed – it’s their responsibility to therefore allow us the freedom to vote – it’s not a betrayal to the people because a vote allows parliament to act on what the majority of what people want, quite simply.

  • incorrigible delinquent says:

When will the BBC stop living off the people by extorting a licence fee with home invasion and fake criminal proceedings. The law states that monetary disputes are civil. So the BBC also commits fraud and treason.

  • Good luck everyone says:

Brexit is for brainless, paranoid, knuckle dragging white trash who will NEVER have a better future! Might as well die today numbties.

  • Vishesh Raisinghani says:

Let's have another referendum. A lot of the old people are dead since the first vote and we could stop this nonsense once and for all

  • caspers last stand me says:

Could there be no brexit at all ? Could there be a second referendum ? And these things generally run in three's so here is the third, could there be a second civil war in the UK, think very carefully about the leading questions you ask as you may not like the answers, the genie has already been let out of the bottle, do you really want to risk opening more of these bottles ?

  • Surprisingly respectful point from Mr Jeremy Corbin there, about holding an election in the stead of a second referendum. standing up for democracy?! What's going on? Maybe it sounded to blatantly communist? 😂 And obviously completely bias and, in no way impartial, reporting from the BBC with a sprinkle of stupidity from the SNP on top, wonderful…

  • Robbie Craughwell says:

The BBCs campaign for a re- run of the people vote is Truly breath takingly pathetic! As is SLYNEWS, Big Big clear out coming boys and girls of the pretend media.

  • The left only seem to like "democracy" when they get their desired results. It's not how this is supposed to work. They really ought to find a way to make a smooth Brexit and negotiate good and workable trade deals and move forward, but they mucked it up…

  • Knowledge is Power says:

I don't get what's so wrong about a second vote. I mean, i know the majority has voted for leave, but on the other hand, the deals proposed aren't good at all, and no deal is a pretty bad option as most world economists would say, so surely letting the people vote for whats on the table isn't that bad. If the country truly wants leave, even with the the bad options available, then a majority leave would still occur, and if people realised that brexit might not have been the optimal choice, they vote otherwise, i fail to see how it was undemocratic.

  • So what? We’re gonna keep voting until we remain? The whole point of a democracy is to listen to what the people want, no matter how ‘slim’ the majority is. “New information” what new information?! Leaving the EU means we can control our own borders, our fishermen thanks to the EU are losing out on the fishing trade because other countries are allowed to fish in our seas. The whole point of Brexit is we have sovereignty of our land and borders, and not be completely dictated to by Brussels. Calling normal working class people dumb because they voted Brexit is ignorant and is complete nonsense, the government asked us what we wanted, and we gave an answer.

  • We need the EU for our prosperity and jobs they say. Try telling that to the people who live in provincial towns and cities that are on their arse. Doubt leaving will make much of a difference to them. That is why they voted out. Nah, all Brexit will hurt is big business and banks, or those who want a nice pool of cheap labour to make them even richer.

  • So if remain possibly win on the next vote, should we possibly have a third vote, like 2 out of 3, maybe, to get final result, or is that possibly it ?

  • There better not be another vote the people have spoken if the people who missed it or are not happy that is not how it works. You should've prepared better or actually voted. You live in a democracy and the majority chosen the path of the people. If there is a change because there isn't a deal.or a small minority is crying then you spit in the fave of the founding principles of a democratic country. I hate the left with a passion and you cucks at the bbc

  • the BBC and the remainers need to learn that we voted leave , remain lost! they are simply spoilt brat kids kicking and screaming till they get what they want! liberalism has ruined this country freedom of speech has gone too far the other way, the BBC and in fairness other media outlets aswell constantly ram 2nd referendum or no leave down peoples throats , people are fed up to the back teeth of it

  • Sad to see U.K. voters have their share of corrupt politicians. Hey politicians, the People did vote. You all are pretty much like our Pelosi and Schumer, worthless!

  • Given what we’ve learned about Russian interference in the US election, it seems to me that a revote would most importantly ensure that the vote was not hacked by Russia. What a sane if the UK has been unaware of how much was done? If the Brexit vote is a gauge of what the people want, a second vote would guarantee that the answer would be certain. If I were wanting a vote, I would offer two votes, exactly the same, with the winner being two out of three.

This is too important to risk that Russia made the decision, not the UK.

  • No Britain isn't ready for brexit! But its gearing up for little Britain!!!!! Yeh bet no bet Yeh bet no bet!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂

  • Yes my own father will come straight back to UK and bask in the sunny days here in Scotland lol
Well they went to these other countries giving them our British money well they can just stay there lol

  • Politicians who advocate a second referendum say the choice should be between whatever deal May offers or staying in the EU. Would they like it if the choice was between accepting May's deal or no deal? If there is a "people's vote" all three choices – accept deal, have no deal, remain – needs to be on the ballot paper.

  • They never thought we would vote to leave so there plan was to make it look like they couldn't agree on a Brexit plan and ask the public for help, cue a second referendum, basically making us think that we are the solution, grind down the sheople to the point that there sick of hearing the word Brexit and because the sheople have listened to all the scaremongering that they will vote to stay in. Its social manipulation people, WAKE THE HELL UP. If we stay in the EU after we voted to leave then I will tear up any political leaflet that comes through my door and will use this whole mess to tell my children why we should NEVER EVER vote again as will the rest of us who voted to leave. Britain is on a balance between democracy and dictatorship and currently I am ASHAMED to be British phhffftt

  • Mike Stouchberry says:

Have a second referendum a 3rd a 4th maybe 5th. They are doing all this crap on purpose so brexit doesn’t happen. 75 percent of mp’s never wanted brexit in first place. No wonder a deal will never pass. It’s a sham, why have referendums at all if they don’t uphold the vote
