CNN Newsroom Live 7/28/19 – CNN Live Stream Now Today July 28, 2019

off on this Twitter tirade about representative Elijah Cummings in the district that he represents which includes the city of Baltimore for a combination of reasons the president obviously unhappy with the way that representative Cummings grilled DHS officials during House testimony earlier this week on the issue of immigration and the president apparently also watching Fox News in the hour before this series of tweets were sent out they did a segment about West Baltimore in which a Fox News commentator negatively compared conditions in that city to conditions at the southern border laying the blame on representative Cummings so that's where you get the president's line of attack forget questions about decorum were about race baiting which we've seen this president do in the past there's also the fact that these tweets are misinformed representative Elijah Cummings district is actually one of the most well educated and most of fluent predominantly African American districts in the country so the picture that the president is painting is to say the least inaccurate the mayor of Baltimore Jack Young weighed in on this attack listen to what he said I guess everybody in the seventh District will be assaulted including me I mean you grass on the district see all the developers we had done and we're still working to rebuild some of the areas that need to help the most so for him to say that was an insult to me as a resident who lived in the seventh congressional district that was totally Edsel we're not going to ignore anyone the grading Baltimore City and its elected leadership know what President Trump as we've seen before digging and tweeting this out on Saturday evening the president writing quote Elijah Cummings spends all of his time trying to hurt innocent people through oversight he does nothing for his very poor very dangerous and very badly run district take a look and then he hashtags it blacks for Trump 2020 president Trump shifting into campaign mode there but it appears he will need some help courting the african-american vote let's not forget President Trump got eight percent from the African American community during the 2016 election for Sanchez CNN at many Democrats are furious over mr. Trump's remarks and they are pushing back hard on television and social media congressman Cummings fired off this response mr. president I go home to my district daily each morning I wake up and I go and fight for my neighbor's it is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the executive branch but it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents and this reaction also from Baltimore politician Nick Mosby speaking earlier with CNN's ana Cabrera if President Trump ever decided to step foot in any part of West Baltimore he would see hardworking Americans who wake up every single day who try to prepare their kids to become the best Americans who go to work who own small businesses who are the bedrock of what we see in communities all throughout this country and for him to try to disparage and insult overwhelmingly majority a part of the state of Maryland the city of Baltimore is just completely unacceptable House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was born in Baltimore she defended Cummings as a beloved member of Congress at a champion of civil rights Pelosi added we all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership Democratic senator and presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren went a step further listen Donald Trump once again is a racist who makes ever more outrageous racist remarks to be attacked and hometown newspaper The Baltimore Sun summed up its opinion with this headline better to have a few rats than to be one we have mainly seen silence from Republicans on mr. Trump's tweets the lieutenant governor of Maryland though who is a Republican did respond tweeting mr. president I have substantial policy differences with congressman Cummings however I hope your criticism is not directed at the many good and hard-working people who live in the district it's fair to say that some stories hit a little closer to home than others especially for people who grew up in Baltimore the place that they call home but the word infested as an african-american journalist to hear that word infested used over and over seemingly reserved only for people of color the president attacks I understand how my colleague Victor Blackwell well felt as he delivered the facts straight down the line but the attacks hurt listen infested he says the president says about congressman Cummings district from the day out was brought home from the hospital to the day I left for college and a lot of people I care about still do there a challenge is no doubt but people are proud of their community I don't want to sound self-righteous what people get up and go to work there they care for their families there they love their children who pledge allegiance to the flag just like people who live in districts of congressmen who support you sir they are Americans too sometimes it's not about right and left sometimes it's just about right and wrong so to reiterate Victor's point mr. president these are Americans too well said it will we'll see if this issue shows up in the next debate Democrats are just days away from the second round and will talk about how they will struggle to set themselves apart that's coming up also two Americans are sitting in an Italian jail police say they stabbed the police officer there we go live to Rome for details about this case in say a dozen people were shot in a Brooklyn neighborhood on Saturday night insert the mayor of the city bill de blasio said the shooting shattered a peaceful neighborhood event this happened at a park at least one person is in critical condition well the next round of Democratic presidential candidate debates will be held Tuesday and Wednesday in Detroit hosted by CNN it is a crowded field as you likely know 20 people competing for airtime and public recognition for the front-runner Joe Biden the former US vice president this is a chance to assert himself to stand out more forcefully after his less than commanding performance for the first debate for others they'll be looking to articulate their vision and to build name recognition no doubt the candidates are spending this weekend practicing for that debate moment that they hope to break out well maybe they can't anticipate everything that might happen of course they can't but fortune tends to smile on those who are best prepared for more about it here's CNN's Gloria Borger by this kickoff rally California congressman Eric Schwaab well was center stage but at the first primary debate he was nearly off the stage walking out is that is really intimidating you're just pointing at people you like I don't know if I know you're not but you know I'm pointing I'm waving then you feel like you're just like completely you know vulnerable and just everyone's looking at you that debate would be his last today and our presidential campaign our polling just you know it's stayed flat it did it didn't it didn't go anywhere remaining at less than 1% and as the field lines up for the to CNN debates the pressure is really on because in the fall securing podium spots will be twice as hard so Detroit could be the end of the trail maybe 12 13 of these candidates there's not going to be another shot after this to some extent not qualifying for the next debate is a death sentence there's a lot of ways to screw up a debate what is essential is to think about what can I do so that there won't be a total disaster here McCain attack phrases Bradley attack phrases Stuart Stevens has prepped Republican candidates from George W Bush and Dick Cheney to Mitt Romney ideally before debate you look at your polling and you'd say who do I need to talk to you would never make an ad that just says well I don't know I'm not sure if it's gonna apply to it'd be like shooting a shotgun in the air and hoping ducks fly by what really drives coverage in these debates is friction it has taken someone on as Kamala Harris did attacking Joe Biden's record on bussing there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bused to school every day and that little girl was me she's won once she says that because she's defined herself and she got her bio and you you liked that person and you're pulling for that person so it didn't seem contrived it was a different stream prepared and contrived I think prepared as you've thought about it she's comfortable talking about race and it shows Biden was uncomfortable being challenged in that way and that showed – I mean your prezi united states with your vice-president you walk in a room people usually applaud and you're not used to having somebody get in your face if you were advising joe biden right now what would you tell him to do be on offense offense be on offense you are there to win votes you're not there to defend your lead that's fine if you're Biden or if you're Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders fighting over many of the same voters but if you're not a name-brand candidate breaking out can be hard to do and this other alternatives up there that are acceptable there's always this question like why are you on the shelf I mean do we really need like eight variations of barbecue potato chips when you're speaking you just like feel the glare of the moderators looking at you like you're not the top tier person like you can just like feel you know that so you had like five minutes four minutes and 45 seconds but who's counting yeah what can you do really in that amount of time have a moment that gets replaced if we're gonna solve the issue of student loan debt pass the torch if we're gonna end gun violence for families who are fearful sending their kids to school pass the torch do you think you've got a little too torchy there again you know I I thought all of these issues as someone who has worked on you know gun violence and student loan debt that many of them are generational didn't look a little contrived though too many torches yeah maybe I could you know one one fewer torch in these debates preparation can be everything you can't do it for five minutes here or there they get no lifeline it's them it's the camera the audience the opponents there's no phone a friend and they're gonna sink or swim and that's where you know this is an important test in the process and after all that studying and all those rehearsals how does it feel backstage when your candidate goes off script it's a very special feeling when you're standing it you know you're standing there watching the television you're thinking what are they doing that is not what we said right on the other hand I will say as a campaign manager there is no way for you to know what it is like public failure is never easy but with 20 candidates it's more than likely you have to be willing first of all to admit that you're probably going to lose and be willing to lose and stand for something you can try too hard running for president and it will always come back and bite you so it's a fine line for every candidate on stage and press but don't look like you're trying too hard you know just be yourself Gloria Borger CNN Washington all right let's separate the contrived from the authentic Oh with Scott Lucas Scott joining us this our professor of international politics at the University of Birmingham also the founder and editor of EA worldview this hour and Birmingham England good to have you Scott very good morning to you all right so let's talk about the front-runner and Joe Biden promising to take off the gloves this time he says no more mr. nice guy but isn't that what voters like about Joe Biden how do you see him striking that balance it's gonna be very interesting for Joe Biden because what happened before the first debate is is he was really riding the wave of name recognition I mean after all he was the vice president he's been in Washington for 40 years but then when he got tested on issues specifically the issue of racing of bossing that it wasn't enough to get him by so I don't think it's enough to say oh I'm gonna take the gloves off I'm gonna be tough Joe as opposed to nice Joe I think the question is how does he engage with those other nine candidates on that night on the podium about climate change about economics about immigration as well as about issues of race in other words I think Joe Biden is gonna have to get down and start discussing issues whether it's nice or nasty in terms of the Tony tries to strike well we know the former vice president will likely be pushed he'll face senators Canella Harris and Cory Booker both have taken issue with Biden's past record when it comes to things like criminal justice reform like race as you point out is this the winning strategy for them or can Biden get past his past and focus on the present president well I it was interesting in your package that your experts were talking about creating friction to create the moment and and and I understand that but I think the big thing here is you've actually got to create a bit of policy or ideas also as well I think what has been notable is that Kamala Harris got that boost in the first debate because her challenge to Biden was based on an issue about the way that people of color have been treated in the past and treated in the present Julian Castro got a boost in the first debate although he's a relatively little-known candidate for many people because he raised the question of trying to deal with migrants fairly rather than putting them in detention centers and Elizabeth Warren who has not pushed for friction has really pushed for the idea of putting out policies whether it's economic justice whether it's employment whether it's health care so I think if you're going to look at the exchanges between a Harris a Booker another candidate in Joe Biden well Walter Mondale said it to Gary Hart in 1984 where's the beef and I think that line in terms of substance rather than style still carries resumes president Trump we know that he recently commented about Bernie Sanders mr. Trump saying that he seems to have missed his time Sanders the Sanders still have that support that appeal that he had the last election cycle I mean Bernie Sanders still has two things one is he has the name recognition for running in 2016 and he has a lot of loyal supporters who really at times when he was not as well known went into the campaign and have ridden with it for four years now the question is when you have other people that are talking about issues that Bernie raised such as national health care for all such as dealing with the banking and financial systems in terms of fairness for all can he regain the idea that he has something distinctive to say I think in the first debate he struggled to do that let's see if he can retake the stage on the second debate especially is one of the people who I think is overtaking him on issues Elizabeth Warren we'll be right there next to him all right Scott Lucas with perspective thanks a lot thank you George and of course don't forget the next democratic debates only here live on CNN Tuesday and Wednesday coverage starts at 8 p.m. Eastern Time here in the United States you can see an encore presentation 7:00 a.m. London time the our viewers here in the US and around the world you're watching CNN NEWSROOM I'm Natalie Allen and I'm George Howell what the headlines were following for you this hour Democrats are defending prominent Democratic congressman Elijah Cummings this after the US president called him a bully and said that his district was a quote rat infested mess end quote Cummings the chairman of the House Oversight Committee said he fights for his district every day and conducts oversight of the Trump administration as his constitutional duty protesters demanding free and fair elections were met with the police crackdown Saturday in Moscow Russian officials say more than 1,000 people were detained protesters took to the streets after a number of independent and opposition candidates were barred from municipal elections demonstrators in Hong Kong they are staging an unauthorized March looking at a live image right now 431 p.m. there in Hong Kong this is the eighth straight weekend of pro-democracy protests this after police and demonstrators clashed during an illegal rally on Saturday police say they arrested an alleged organizer after yesterday's protest saying that he ignored police objections Hong Kong police say they fired rubber bullets and tear gas into the crowd Saturday because protesters threw bricks and glass bottles at them but Amnesty International says police escalated the tension targeting were treating protesters civilians and journalists police charged protesters as well as CNN's Anna Coren and her team inside a train station she described what was happening live on air [Applause] absolute chaos we're just right outside my coming too I have never witnessed anything quite like this it was a peaceful peaceful demonstration inside these purchases they are trashing anything all they were doing was standing here they've been pushed on and they're on a sudden he's rightfully charged a train station we are inside a train station and I want the world to see what is going on here and your loss their batons with their parents right [Applause] these are Porchester curling bricks just standing hey that's a no that that is an umbrella there are still about a hundred thoughtful protesters who are refusing to go home we want you to see what is going on here here at you own inside a shopping mall on the way to the train station it was absolutely wild scene we were being chased through we appreciate Ana and her crew for hanging in there to bring us that story you could hear it in her voice how nerve-racking that was Hong Kong's hospital authorities say 24 people were injured as a result of Saturday's clashes police arrested 11 people and we're following the latest protests in Hong Kong throughout the day of course again this live image as the protests come together we'll have updates here on CNN for you now to Italy authorities have arrested two Americans in connection with the death of a police officer there according to police he was stabbed in Rome during an altercation with these two police add the two confessed to the crime after being interrogated Italy's interior minister says he wants both of them to serve life in prison Barbee nado has been covering the story she joins us live from Rome with more it seems that so far we've only heard from the police on this story but I want to start with you on how this occurred according to police it started as a drug deal gone wrong is that right that's right that's what the police are saying they're saying that these two a 19 year old in 19 and 18 year old Americans from San Francisco bought cocaine in Rome on early morning hours of Friday and when they got the cocaine they determined or realized very soon that it was actually crushed aspirin so they went back to the pusher and demanded an explanation they stole his backpack allegedly and then they made a deal with the pusher in order to try to get the backpack back and to get real cocaine this is according to the police at that point the police officer working undercover and apparently without any weapons which is a big curiosity had an altercation with along with a partner with these two 18 19 year-old Americans at that time the police alleged that the American boys stabbed beat up and stabbed the police officers then ran to their hotel room hid the bloody knife and their bloody clothes in the ceiling panel and were they're escaped out of the country that is according to the police narrative and they've really driven the narrative so far and it's important of course to know that the police lost one of their own this is a man who just returned back to the force after his honeymoon much-loved in Rome much respected within the force and so you know I think we've got a lot of emotion running high from the side of the police at this point Natalie we had such a tragic tragic story we'll have attorneys for the teenagers or the families of these teenagers made any statements to elaborate on perhaps what the story is here well the family of Finnegan elder did release a public statement saying that they didn't have a lot of details and that they express their sorrow for what happened to the police officer the lawyer for that young man is well this is a court-appointed lawyer at this time made a statement that his client is no longer exercising his right to remain silent at this point we haven't heard from the lawyer for the other young man we understand that he is also as an American citizen and an Italian citizen according to some of the court documents we've seen this young man was actually visiting family in a city outside of Rome and had met his friend from the states and they'd come into Rome to party it up and that's what we're hearing but as these cases always go you know they as they evolve you find out more details and as there are lawyers and representations and we have even heard that the State Department and the consulate haven't been allowed access to either of these American citizens and that that's also something that really really needs to be looked into and we are doing our best to get to the bottom of where this investigation is going all right we'll hear from you again soon then thanks so much Barbie no Joe for us in a Rome the father is being charged with manslaughter and negligent homicide in New York this after his one-year-old twins died after being left for hours inside a hot car sadly this kind of tragedy is all too common in the u.s. CNN's Dianne Gallagher has more for us this is just an absolutely crushing story out of the Bronx there in New York City police say that a 39 year old father left his twin one-year-old children strapped into the backseat of his Honda while he went to work at a nearby VA hospital according to the police there those children were left in the car for at least eight hours now witnesses said that they heard that man 39 year old juan rodriguez saying that this was a mistake this was not his fault he did not do this intentionally but he has been charged in the death of his one-year-old daughter and son two counts of manslaughter two counts of criminal negligence we spoke to a man who says that he's been the best friend of Rodriguez for the past nine years and he called Rodriguez a great father he says that he was a social worker at the nearby VA hospital and that they just seen the twins the night before that they had celebrated their first birthday is a neighborhood with a bounce house and bubbles and really just seemed in disbelief that this had happened here now we have made attempts to contact Rodriguez's Rodriguez's attorney it was 86 degrees in New York that day and look unfortunately it is far too common parents leaving their children in hot vehicles it sounds shocking but over the past 20 years about a quarter of those hot car deaths involving children those kids were left in the parking lot of a place of employment while a parent or a caregiver went to work and so look experts do say if you think you're going to forget if you're busy you're tired whatever just be safe put a shoe put your phone put your bag in the back seat because it only takes minutes for these children to die in those cars let alone the eight that police say these twins were left in their car well the father Juan were Regas appeared in court Saturday he posted bail and I've noticed those traffic signs on the interstate those electronic ones are now saying never leave your child in a car warning people to kind of wake up to that it's so important either just to realize that the danger there some people just don't quite quite get it yeah we'll still have the Democrats running for all US for the US president they all agree the president Trump is wrong on immigration but they don't always agree on what to do about it we look at their policies when we come back there you go okay okok not getting in today not on my watch pests never stop trying to get in we never stopped working to keep the mountain Terminix defenders of home men are you urinating more often making late immigration detention centers and reform the immigration court system Castro and O'Rourke have clashed over a section of the law that makes it a crime to enter the US illegally Castro wants to repeal the law making illegal entry a simple civil violation they're using section 1325 of that act which criminalizes coming across the border to incarcerate the parents and then separate them some of us on this stage have called to end that section to terminate it some like congressman O'Rourke have not I helped to introduce legislation that would ensure that we don't criminalize those who are seeking asylum and refuge in this country the detention of families over the last year has shaped the rhetoric of most Democrats Elizabeth Warren is like most of these candidates calling for families not to be detained while their immigration cases are being processed tears families apart the great nation lakhs of children we need at the we must at the borders respect the dignity of every human being that comes here the Trump administration's hardline approach on reducing the number of undocumented immigrants in the country has inspired some candidates to call for the end of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency you don't need this ice though that's the other thing I should say this ice as its form now should be abolished most candidates aren't going that far instead calling for ice to be reformed and some of its immigration enforcement duties to be passed off to other agencies I think it's not just ice it is very clear that the immigration system itself I mean you've heard some of it and there's a lot more we haven't discussed today is completely broken it's absolutely broken Democrats are facing accusations from President Trump of pushing for open borders and being weak on security it's a question that will follow these candidates and it is part of what this president is trying to do to really miss inform the American people to say that Democrats don't care about border security we have to enforce our laws and keep our borders safe the shadow of the border is casting a deep divide on the presidential campaign trail ed Lavandera CNN Dallas all right it's not what you one location this is the eighth straight weekend of pro-democracy demonstrations and they're also demanding justice for the police violence during earlier protests among other issues all of this happening after violent clashes that took place during an illegal rally on Saturday police say they fired rubber bullets and tear gas into the crowds after protesters threw bricks and glass bottles at them let's get what's going on now let's take you straight there live Kristy Lou Staudt it's in the middle of it all Kristy and what is evolving there on the streets today Natalie it's incredible what started as a lawful rally against police tactics in central in a place called traitor garden has morphed into an unlawful March as it's banned out across the city of Hong Kong I am now in Causeway Bay and from the Sogo department store this is arguably one of the most famous shopping districts in Hong Kong this intersection that I'm standing it is usually one of the busiest intersections in Hong Kong if not all of Asia there are no cars here the cars are cleared out it is full of protesters and people and passers-by I talked earlier to a protest leader named Bonnie Lyon of the civil Human Rights Brunton I answer earlier when the March started essential where they were going she had no idea this is a symptom of this decentralized leaderless protest movement in Hong Kong where it's become spontaneous and at this moment we don't know what's going to happen next there are also reports that some protesters are fanning out towards jung-hwan that's the direction of where the China liaison office is that's the top representative of the Chinese central government here in Hong Kong we're keeping tabs on that situation here and what we do see is a number of protesters dressed in black some of them wearing the hard hats they are anonymous many of them wearing masks we've seen them erect barricades bring out the zip lines tying them together they're looking at their encrypted messaging apps and figure out what is this day to play what is going to happen next what is really of protesters this day is the latest in the police response in the events at CNN witness last night Indian loans in the far north of the city where we witnessed there was an unlawful March largely peaceful some protestors engaging in violent acts during projectiles and the police in a very portable Cleary's operation cleared all of them out using pepper spray using tear gas on CNN teams were able to see blood on the floor the train station in you alone as a result about operation the Hong Kong hospital authorities reported 24 people were hospitalized as a result of that the Hong Kong police forces said poor of its own police officers they were injured as oh they have defended their response earlier spoke to a pro-democracy activist Rajpura wall sisters at the beginning of when this unlawful March happened when it was still a legal rally in simple about the police response and how that has galvanized the movement Plus's Osman I would use to describe our protest as anti extradition bill protests of course we knew that the bill is still exist and not terminated and withdraw yet but with the police violence and how government just being the puppet of Beijing we knew that now it's not only related to the extradition bill now it's the summer of this content to see Jinping and Caroline Joshua Vaughn calling this the summer of discontent that is entered its 8th consecutive weekend of protest you're seeing the protesters behind me wielding their umbrellas not necessarily because of the heat not necessarily because of any rainfall but to shield their identities of the shield the activity that is happening underneath those umbrellas it feels like the events that have happened this weekend these unlawful partner protests especially what's happening this day that spontaneously broken out represents a new front in this long summer protests here in Hong Kong previously the protesters would ask for permission the permission would be granted residents of Hong Kong would be aware of the red areas that they should avoid now there's a feeling that a protest movement this could break out at any corner of Hong Kong back to you all right Christie Lou Staudt covering it for us we'll stay in close contact and certainly hope it remains peaceful after yesterday all right protests in Russia as well demonstrators in Moscow were met by force with police and more than a thousand people were detained there police armed with batons they tried to repel the protesters from reaching the City Hall there the demonstrators were demanding free and fair voting this after a number of opposition and independent candidates were barred from municipal elections that's what they got for wanting fair elections the clashes left several people beaten and bloodied Saturday's rally was declared illegal after one of Russia's largest protests in years last weekend all right here in the United States the outrage is raw after the US president insults an American city and its prominent african-american representative to Congress this time the target veteran House Democrat Elijah Cummings the chairman of the House Oversight Committee the president Street called Cummings a bully and said the congressman's district in Maryland was a rat and rodent infested mess where no person would want to live more about it now from CNN's Boris Sanchez at the White House it appears that President Trump was set off on this Twitter tirade about representative Elijah Cummings in the district that he represents which includes the city of Baltimore for a combination of reasons the president obviously unhappy with the way that representative Cummings grilled DHS officials during House testimony earlier this week on the issue of immigration and the president apparently also watching Fox News in the hour before this series of tweets were sent out they did a segment about West Baltimore in which a Fox News commentator negatively compared conditions in that city to conditions at the southern border laying the blame on representative Cummings so that's where you get the president's line of attack forget questions about decorum were about race baiting which we've seen this president do in the past there's also the fact that these tweets are misinformed representative Elijah Cummings district is actually one of the most well educated and most of fluent predominantly African American districts in the country so the picture that the president is painting is to say the least inaccurate the mayor of Baltimore Jack Young weighed in on this attack listen to what he said I guess everybody the seventh District will be assaulted including me I mean you grass on the district see all the developers we had done and we're still working to rebuild some of the areas that need to help the most so for him to say that was an insult to me as a resident who lived and seven Christmases it was totally ed so we're not going to ignore anyone the grading horrible city no president Trump as we've seen before digging and tweeting this out on Saturday evening the president writing quote Elijah Cummings spends all of his time trying to hurt innocent people through oversight he does nothing for his very poor very dangerous and very badly run district take a look and then he hashtags it blacks for Trump 2020 president Trump shifting into campaign mode there but it appears he will need some help courting the african-american vote let's not forget President Trump got eight percent from the African American community during the 2016 election for Sanchez CNN at the White House well many Democrats are furious over mr. Trump's remarks and they're pushing back hard on television and social media congressman Cummings fired off this response mr. president I go home to my district daily each morning I wake up and I go and fight for my neighbors it is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the executive branch referring to his job in Washington but it is my moral duty he said to fight for my constituents and this reaction from Baltimore politician Nick Mosby speaking earlier with CNN's ana Cabrera if President Trump ever decided to step foot in any part of West Baltimore he would see hardworking Americans who wake up every single day who try to prepare their kids to become the best Americans who go to work who own small businesses who are the bedrock of what we see in communities all throughout this country and for him to try to disparage and insult overwhelmingly majority a part of the state of Maryland in the city of Baltimore is just completely unacceptable House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was born in Baltimore she defended Cummings as a beloved member of Congress and a champion of civil rights Pelosi added quote we all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership Democratic senator and presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren went even further Donald Trump once again is a racist who makes ever more outrageous racist remarks to be attacked by a president issuing racist tweets is beyond insulting it is disgusting this president brings shame to himself into the office and here here's the hometown newspaper The Baltimore Sun it's summed it up its opinion with the headline better to have a few rats than to be won some stories hit comb a little closer than others especially for people who grew up in Baltimore it is a place that they call home but that word infested as a black journalist to hear that word infested used over and over again seemingly reserved only for people of color that the president attacks I understand how my colleague Victor Blackwell felt as he delivered the facts straight down the line but the attacks on his hometown hurt listen this morning the president attacked another member of Congress on Twitter this time it's House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings he wrote this Cummings district is a disgusting rat and rodent infested mess if he spent more time in Baltimore maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous and filthy place no human being would want to live there infested it's usually reserved for references to rodents and insects but we've seen the president invoke infestation to criticize lawmakers before you see a pattern here just two weeks ago President Trump attacked for minority congresswoman why don't they go back to the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came reminder three of them were born here all of them are American infested he says a week before his inauguration January 2017 Congressman John Lewis has spent more time on fixing and helping his district which is in horrible shape and falling apart not to mention crime-infested Donald Trump has tweeted more than 43 thousand times he's insulted thousands of people many different types of people but when he tweets about infestation it's about black and brown people September 2014 at the height of an urgent health emergency why are we sending thousands of ill trained soldiers into in bola Ebola infested areas of Africa bring the plague to the US Obama is so stupid infested he says there's a revolution going on in California so many sanctuary areas one out of this ridiculous crime-infested and breeding concept infested he says the president says about congressman Cummings district that no human would want to live there you know who did mr. president I did from the day out was brought home from the hospital to the day I left for college and a lot of people I care about still do they're a challenge is no doubt but people are proud of their community I don't want to sound self-righteous when people get up and go to work there they care for their families there they love their children who pledge allegiance to the flag just like people who live in districts of congressmen who support you sir they are Americans too sometimes it's not about right and left sometimes it's just about right and wrong Victor's point very authentic to reiterate it these are Americans too we'll be right back after the break my experience with USA has been excellent they really appreciate military family and everything shows with all that USA offers like go with anybody Detroit hosted by CNN and it is a crowded field 20 people competing for air time and public recognition good luck okay for frontrunner Joe Biden to former u.s. VP it is a chance to assert himself maybe more forcefully after his lesson commanding performance at the first debate for others they'll be looking to articulate their vision and to build name recognition Elizabeth Warren is among the chorus of candidates condemning president Trump's attack on congressman Elijah Cummings CNN's Rebecca buck is covering the u.s. senator as she campaigns in the crucial state of New Hampshire while with just a few days until the CNN debate in Detroit Elizabeth Warren hit the campaign trail in New Hampshire on Saturday she is enjoying a burst of momentum in this presidential race just logged 1 million donations to her campaign this week a very important milestone for her grassroots fundraising operation of course she remains in the top tier in polling and though the question going into the debate into as how does she continue this momentum for her her campaign and also build on it first she is going to be on stage with senator Bernie Sanders the two of them side by side both liberal progressive icons both competing for many of the same voters to the far left of the party the question of course is how Warren is going to handle this some of the other candidates for example Joe Biden have been sounding more aggressive in the lead-up to these debates Joe Biden of course will be on stage on Wednesday with senators calmly Harris and Cory Booker Warren said today that she does not plan to be aggressive to start fights with other candidates but she is going to just get out there and tell her message talk about what she believes this campaign is about talk about her plans for America she says she's delighted to be on stage with Bernie Sanders who she considers a friend so we can expect a more even perhaps less contentious debate on Tuesday night but that doesn't make it any less important to any less high stakes for a Lizabeth Warren going into this debate now at the same time she responded today to the tweet by President Trump mentioning congressman Cummings and his district in Baltimore I want you to take a listen to what Elizabeth Warren had to say Donald Trump once again is ever more outrageous issuing racist tweets is beyond insulting it is disgusting this president brings shame to himself into the office now that is some of the strongest language we have heard from senator Warren lately as relates to President Trump she's been focusing for the most part on her own message and what she thinks she brings to the table in this Democratic primary so perhaps left shift and a preview of what's to come from Warren on the debate stage this week Rebecca fought BNN Terry New Hampshire let's look ahead to the debates now with Inderjeet Parmar individuated professor of international politics at city university of london joining this hour from our London Bureau energy good to have you thank you very nice to be here so two days and a lot of Democrats will be on stage all fighting for the spotlight the question here does it benefit these candidates to focus on their individual visions for the future on these key table top issues or to see more of a food fight play out among contenders that are trying to break out well I think it's both of those things really if you look at the micro politics of the debates we have 20 candidates we have about five who are kind of in a in a pack on their own really for now I think with Harris holding up the rear and you have a number of other candidates who basically it's it's almost a do or die last throw of the dice they've got to make a big impact so I think they'll be the ones who will be having to fight it out beta or orc cory booker and the others but fraud and saying no more mr. nice guy but that generally isn't that what voters like about Joe Biden the question here how do you see him striking that balance in 2g I think I think Joseph Biden has a long history and unfortunately a big part of that history is that he tends to make a lot of gaffes in public he brought up the you know he's a support of the Hyde Amendment from the 70s on the issue of abortion he brought up having collaborated with segregationist senators he's got to try to put some of that behind him the unfortunate thing for President I thought former Vice President Biden is that he's steeped in the very history of that party which is really a very protocol for corporate politics as well as the kind of establishment politics of the Clinton administration and so on back in the 1990s it's a very difficult thing for him to be able to steer a path of looking like a statesman and therefore able to take on President Trump in that way and fighting it out with the others because they effectively are attacking core parts of his agenda and just highlighting a point of fact here mr. Biden saying that he no longer supports the Hyde Amendment something that had caught people by surprise for sure but it seems that the Vice President is evolving as he heads into this election cycle Vice President Biden will face senator senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker both have taken issue with his past record when it comes to things like criminal justice reform and race is this the winning strategy for them Indrajit or can Biden get past his past to focus on the present president I think it's very difficult for prayer for Joseph Biden to do that but the problem really lies a bit more deeper than that I would say and that is even the politics of identity which Carla Harris and Cory Booker and others have really staked their their kind of claims on it really does elide some very very objective developments in American society and the population at large the electorate and that is the electorate is much more focused on material issues economic issues issues about inequality and standards of living in the future whereas the politics of the Democratic Party is still playing on the turf of identity politics only and I think that plays into president Trump's hand is a great deal so unless there's a kind of vision over and above identity fairness which also encompasses issues about you know the minimum wage and healthcare and so on I think it's going to be very hard for any any of the candidates including Joe Biden but also Camilla Harris as well Indrajit Parmar with perspective thank you energy thank you very much all right you can see how they all do the next democratic debates will be live on CNN too and Wednesday coverage beginning at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time here in the US which you can see encore presentations at 7:00 a.m. in London the day after only here still ahead u.s. the world it is good to have you here on CNN NEWSROOM I'm George Howell I'm Natalie Allen the headlines this hour for you demonstrators in Hong Kong are staging an unauthorized March right now police had allowed them to stay put in one location today but many are on the move this is the 8th straight weekend of pro-democracy protests they are demanding justice for police violence during earlier protests among other issues the new protests to tell you about in Sudan people there contesting the official death toll from last month's deadly protests the government says 87 people were killed when police crackdown on peaceful sit-ins in June the opposition though says that figure is much too low we're following a developing story in new york city police say a dozen people were shot saturday night in a park in a Brooklyn neighborhood Mayor Bill DeBlasio said the shooting shattered a peaceful neighborhood event for blocking bills and at election security as new Senate reports warn of an ongoing election threat here's how the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell defended the move though listen clearly this request is not a serious effort to make a law clearly something so partisan 17 as US election infrastructure from 2014 to 2017 and that they are all they also targeted 50 states what tactics do the Russians use in the election and what might they be doing now but there's several tactics that are identified in the report some are just affecting or trying to break into the voter registration systems might mind you that is different than the vote system but the voter registration and specifically the report actually pointed out that the vote itself was never as far as they are aware and those are the key words as far as they are aware was never accessed but also and more is gonna come out on this they used other channels to effect perception they tested different systems out to see if there were vulnerabilities so in other words they were scanning that we're trying to get in they were trying to break into so far we know 18 possibly 21 states so when you say voter registration systems then what would they do what's the goal well the goal here if I'm the Russians what I would do is I would figure out ok these people are listed as Republicans these are listed as Democrats I know the name of the individuals I know how I can target them to affect their perception or opinion of certain candidates who are running so this isn't a one-off where you get in as a Russian and you you get in you change something and you get out this is something that you have to do over time because it takes time to affect somebody's belief in somebody or belief in a philosophy so I see this as just one step in a longer-term plan to then go out there and push messages to certain individuals a certain kind and a different kind of message to certain individuals who may be on the other side of the east side depending on or in the independence and we heard from a special counselor Moeller this week that they haven't stopped this is ongoing he warned leaders on Capitol Hill that this is a threat to American democracy and it is ongoing let's listen to him right here in your investigation that you think that this was a single attempt by the Russians to get involved in our election or did you find evidence to suggest they'll try to do this again oh and what a single attempt they're doing as we sit here and they expect to do it during the next campaign that was a warning and despite that warning Republican lawmakers to feed at a democratic measure right after that saying it was too partisan and that got representative a Republican leader Mitch McConnell branded hashtag Moscow Mitch on Twitter but how important is it at this moment that the u.s. comes together on this issue if not what's at stake look there's no question Natalie this cannot be a issue that the ours are on one side and the DS on the other has to be bipartisan I think the problem that we're seeing is that it's a federal versus state whose territory it is and that's where the real debates are going on but the question of what should be done about it there is no question we should be acting on this now and it's not just the Russians I know director Muller said the Russians are doing it as we speak but I think what he ought to be saying is the Russians the Iranians the other countries then waiting another four years or waiting another two years I mean this this we knew about 2014 and earlier and that's why it's kind of surprising that it's taking so long for the Intel committee to come out with just even one of five reports right there needs to be a sense of outrage to the point that as you say they come together in Washington because does do we have the intelligence and do we have the technology to get ahead of Russia and others and take care of this well let me say something that probably nobody in Washington probably wants me to say we've had the technology to respond to these kinds of things for years this is nothing where you are paying attention and updating your systems using the latest antivirus anti-phishing software and things like that educating your your own government workforce there's all sorts of things that government should have been doing years ago that would make this much more complicated so unless she's surprised that this is being treated as all it's a new cutting-edge thing the fact of the matter is we could have stopped it we need to get the folks on the hill the folks in Washington to actually get together and say we aren't gonna say well let's do it next time we're going to say let's do it yesterday and really truly get together
