Chris Philp – BBC News – Common Market 2.0 is not a solution for Brexit

Labour’s Lucy Powell talking this
morning about a common market 2.0 outside the EU but part of an economic
area would that be something that you could potentially back? No because the common market 2.0 or Norway plus as Nick Bowles used to call it means being in
the single market so you’ve got to follow all of the rules including on the
City of London and you’re in the customs union effectively so any free trade
deals the European Union does we’re bound to follow but equally we can’t
do any free trade deals of our own unlimited free movement of people would
continue and we’d keep making budget contributions to the European Union at
pretty close to the current levels plus we’d have the effective jurisdiction of
the European Court of Justice so all of those things would remain but crucially
we’d have no seat at the table we’d have no veto over trade deals no vote on
single market rules so it’s a considerably worse position than
actually remaining in the European Union so I don’t think that option is a flier
at all the other option is a No Deal exit on the, well I guess it’d be the
12th of April, but I don’t find that terribly appealing
because that would obviously disrupt trade and the other option is to revoke
article 50 cancel the whole thing which clearly dishonours the referendum But would you go for one of those other options to avoid a No Deal Brexit which
you yourself say you don’t find terribly appealing would you go for one of those
other options rather than reach that point? No I’m not sure I would like I say
I voted positively already and for the deal as it stands so I’ve made my choice
I’ve sort of done my duty by voting for something positive which Parliament as a
whole has failed to do now I know the deal has flaws and they’ve been
sort of well debated but in life in politics as in life perfection is
never available you have to compromise and I think the deal does deliver
and but no I wouldn’t be wanting I certainly wouldn’t back revoking article
50 and I wouldn’t support common market 2.0 either to be honest
