[CC] Daniel Howell’s BBC News TV Clip Interview with Ben Hunte

– [Dan (in video clip)] “Hello Internet”. [Dan (in video clip)] “Hello Internet”. [Dan (in video clip)] “Hello Internet, it’s
your boy Daniel here–” [Dan (in video clip)] “As my new apartment video background currently looks like this, which is–” [Dan (in video clip)] “Why do you think this is?” [Dan (in video clip)] “…Ah, well– It’s your father– [Dan (in video clip)] “Eh?– Your dad.” [Dan (in video clip)] “…A consciousness
forever floating [Dan (in video clip)] “five feet over my
head starring sardonically–” [Dan (in video clip)] “Hello Internet.” [Dan (in video clip)] “Spoiler alert, I’m
not straight”. [Dan (in video clip)] “Sex. [Dan (in video clip)] “The foundation of life. [Dan (in video clip)] “And the only–” – [Dan (in person)] It feels like my whole life, [Dan] I’ve just had this
glass wall in front of me, [Dan] And so much of my personality, [Dan] So much of my life, especially with
me being a comedian on the internet [Dan] With so many followers, [Dan] People feel like they know
me so well, and they do. [Dan] It’s just now there’s nothing, [Dan] There’s no obstacles
in my life anymore. [Dan] I literally feel like I’ve been
walking around in a glass box. – [Dan (behind loud music)] So for me, this
wasn’t just: [Dan (behind loud music)] “Oh, I’m going to write a [Dan (behind loud music)] “funny comedy
about coming out about being gay”. – [Dan] So then I did the most awkward
on brand thing for me, [Dan] Which was to just
tell them in an email. – [Ben] What? – [Dan] Yeah, I literally just emailed my family, [Dan] Because it got so ridiculous,
it went on for so long, [Dan] And I was too scared. [Dan] So I literally sent them
an email and I was like: [Dan] “Basically I’m gay”. [Dan] And then I just went send. [Dan] And then I thought look, this is
just the start of the conversation, [Dan] I’m sure we’ll go on about this, [Dan] But I just need to rip the plaster off. – [Ben] Yeah. – [Dan] And that was the terrifying moment. – [Ben] As an online influencer, [Ben] Do you feel that you provide the
LGBT education that some schools won’t? – [Dan] Definitely, I mean this is what the
internet and social media has become, [Dan] Entire communities of young people form [Dan] To create spaces where
they can talk about things [Dan] Because they’re just not
getting it from the real world. [Dan] So yes, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr, [Dan] These are the places that
these young people go to, [Dan] To find a community [Dan] and to actually learn about how
to exist as the person they are, [Dan] Because at the moment, this isn’t
what formal education is actually providing. – [Ben] Let’s talk about haters. [Ben] Were there haters to your video? – [Dan] Not as many as I thought. [Dan] When we talk about
social media in general, [Dan] I think the biggest misconception
that people can have [Dan] Is that this is a fight that is anywhere
near over, just because it’s 2019. [Dan] I mean yes, I think we all agree
the world is a much better place [Dan] Than it was 15 years ago, when [Dan] I was a struggling teenager. [Dan] But when you have the debate over [Dan] what people should be taught
about in schools right now, [Dan] The two women that got
attacked on a bus in London. [Dan] We can’t lie to ourselves and
say that everything is fine right now. [Dan] I think that at this moment, [Dan] We’re actually going through a politically
divided time where there is a bit of kick back [Dan] From people that don’t like that some people [Dan] are fighting so hard to have these spaces [Dan] And to feel accepted. [Dan] So actually, I picked a bit of
a dodgy month to come out [Dan] To be honest.
(both laugh) [Dan] I was like looking at the news like,
“Oh wow, great timing”. [Dan] But to be honest, that’s what
made it even more important. [Dan] You know I couldn’t go: [Dan] “Actually it’s a bit scarier right now
that it was six months ago or a year ago”. [Dan] It’s: “No, this is the most important
time for me to say. [Dan] “No this is the truth
and this is where we’re at”.
