CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? Headline Gala | BFI London Film Festival 2018

– [Woman] Nobody is going to pay for the
writer Lee Israel right now. – [Lee] I’m months behind in my rent,
and my cat is sick. – [Man] It’s 4 in the afternoon and
you’re drunk. – I’m hardly drunk. – Crane, top her up. – [Melissa] I play Lee Israel who was a
fairly successful biography writer in the ’80s. Fell on hard times in the
’90s and was essentially told she was kind of obsolete, couldn’t write anymore,
and couldn’t pay her rent. was on welfare and was kind of pushed into
desperate measures and started forging literary letters.
And she was really good at it. – [Richard] Oh, it’s about friendship more
than anything else and just what people do to each other. It’s hilarious and
heartbreaking. But to find that in one script is pretty amazing.
We all grabbed at it. – [Amy] We set out 10 years ago to make a
film that put a complicated, nuanced woman at the centre.
And I think audiences are ready to really appreciate that women come in all
different shapes and sizes and this is a really exciting story. – I thought about that quite a bit,
you know, what would any of us do if you can’t support yourself,
if you literally are going to lose where you live, you can’t support…you know,
she loved her cat, but it was the only person…the only kind of companion she
had. I don’t know what I would…certainly would do if I had the gift of writing,
I would…I mean, I know it was wrong, but I still kind of think like she was
really good at it and no one really got hurt, no one was killed, so… – Well, Judge Judy came to the premiere in
New York, and I said, “What would you have charged Lee Israel
with,” a part that Melissa McCarthy played so brilliantly. She said,
“I would’ve given her a light fine because nobody got killed, nobody got hurt.”
Friendship is universal and what people do to each other, love, betray,
and then reconcile is…that happens every day. It’s certainly
happened in my life. – [Man 2] We’re probably looking at some
time behind bars. – What? I can’t say that I regret any of
my actions. In many ways, this has been the best time of my life. ♪ [music] ♪
