Breaking Bad Habits by Changing Your Internal Conversation


Welcome I want to talk about breaking
bad habits by changing your internal conversation I think there’s a lot of
ways that we can break our addictions and I think you should try all of them
but this is one trick that worked really well for me by changing the way I talked
to myself in my head about my addiction now for me personally it was video games
and marijuana but it doesn’t really matter what it is these addictions work
on a reward pathway in our brain they feed our brain chemicals and this
has been developed over hundreds of thousands millions of years for us to be
able to survive it operates on that same reward pathway in our brains that tells
us we got it this is survival and so we binge we binge we binge all the way on
it and then by the time we’re done we’re ready to change right we feel guilty we
feel bad we don’t want to do it again this happened to me so many times I play
video games til 3 or 4 a.m. I’d say I don’t want to do this ever again and
then by the next day I’d be right back into it so we want to change but what
ends up happening is we go through this revolving door of I need to change we
tell ourselves we want to change but it’s always something that seems to be
future tense it’s always I want to change I’m gonna change I’m gonna change
tomorrow I’m gonna change after tonight just one last time and this revolving
door keeps us going constantly back to the same thing over and over again and
it doesn’t work and the reason is because we’re talking to ourselves in
future tense it’s always tomorrow it’s always later what worked for me was
changing that dialogue instead of tomorrow it was now and I literally
stopped playing video games on a dime I started telling myself I don’t play
video games I made it now I made it specific and I made it extreme
completely eliminated I don’t do this so for me I don’t play video games was what
I started to tell myself and it works so what we need to do is change that
conversation inside of us we need to just say I don’t do this I
don’t do X whatever it is that you’re dealing with you have
to stop now and you have to be emphatic and you have to be decisive and you have
to be extreme now I hate being extreme but with some of these issues that we
face in our life there just is no other remedy but extremism they control us
they operate on that evolutionary reward system in our heads and we just we can’t
do it kind of we have to get rid of it completely we have to start now by
saying I do not do this anymore this has worked for me with sugar this
has worked for me with video games and it’s worked with me with smoking
marijuana these are three things I’ve completely eliminated in my life by
saying I do not do this these things control us and if we really want to get
to that next level in life if we really want to get to that place where we can
be more productive we have to completely eliminate these bad habits and we can do
this by talking to ourselves in the present tense making it a change that
has already happened and saying I do not do this hopefully this works for you as
well as it worked for me
