BA (Hons) English and Media and Communications at the University of West London

The media and communications part of the degree
is designed to develop students as reflective practitioners. It’s giving students an understanding
of the theories surrounding media and communications, but also helping them to develop the skills
to make media. Creating films, you know, making podcasts, designing your own advertising and
PR campaign. This is the first time we’re joining the media and communications programme
together with an English strand so you’re getting kind of, the transferable skills associated
with English, you’re getting engagement with literary texts and then you’re kind
of, combining that with the digital and with a wider range of media as well. We’ve got
some really great facilities for our students, this is one of them, so this is the Blast
Media studio where students who are doing podcasting or radio based modules come in
then they get to, to use the equipment – it feels so professional, it feels like a real
studio. I think it does have that, that feeling of ooh – I’m doing something really important,
you know, I’m doing something – I’m actually making something real. Yeah well it makes
the transition from university to the professional world that much easier, ‘cos you step into
a professional radio studio after having been trained in facilities like this, and you’re
not overawed, you’re just, you’re ready to go. If you already know that the kind of
thing you want to do is based around communication, if you know that what you enjoy is an element
of creative work, using language and media to project something into the world then this
is probably gonna be a very suitable course for you.
