this has a lot of concern from here to Korea good morning everybody I'm Bill Hemmer live here in New York City how you doing Sandra morning bill House bring the energy I'm Sandra Smith good morning South Korea confirming the North fired two short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast this would be the second missile test in a week and it follows president trunks meeting with kim jong-un at the DMZ just last month that brings us the senior foreign affairs correspondent Greg Powell cop we were back at this now Greg what do we have we are back at this again bill a low bill Sandra in fact yes north Korea has done it again firing off those missiles overnight from either Kim jong-un at the DMZ at that time there was the hope for a resumption of talks to try to deal with North Korea's growing nuclear arsenal but still there been a lot of bad vibration since then finally a bill a Secretary of State Pompeo in the region going to a security conference in Thailand he says he hopes those talks will start soon Hope Springs you turn Thank You Gregg we're watching it closely here great pockets from London today the Democratic divided on full display last night as the second round of debates kicked off in Detroit moderates clashing with far left candidates offering radically different visions for the country here's just a sample of what we saw we're not going to solve the urgent problems that we face with small ideas and spinelessness we can go down the road that senator Sanders and Senator Warren want to take us it'll turn off independent voters and get Trump re-elected that farmer getting hit right now by Trump's trade wars they can't wait for revolution this time to stop worrying about what the Republicans will say look if if it's true that if we embrace a far left agenda they're gonna say we're a bunch of crazy socialists if we embrace a conservative agenda you know we're they're gonna do they're gonna say we're a bunch of crazy socialists I think if we're going to force Americans to make these radical changes they're not going to go along you throw your hands up but you haven't oh boy Kristin Fisher is live in Detroit recapping some of the biggest battles of the night hey good morning Kristin good morning Sandra yet tonight was not the fight between the two leading progressives that many had predicted it was a fight between the moderates and the progressives for really the soul of the Democratic Party and senator Elizabeth Warren had one of the lines of the night in response to former Congressman John Delaney who called her policies fairytale economics and impossible promises I don't understand why anybody does to all the trouble of running for president of the United States just to talk about what we really can't do and shouldn't fight for [Applause] senators Warren and Sanders say Democrats should be fighting for Medicare for all but more moderate candidates like congressman Tim Ryan say it's policies like that that will secure president Trump a second term Medicare for all is comprehensive it covers all health care needs for senior citizens it will finally include dental care hearing aids and eyeglasses but you don't second of all when I wrote the damn bill and the Sanders campaign is already capitalizing on that moment by making I wrote the damn bill stickers another moment and another issue that really highlighted the vibe between the progressive and moderate candidates on the stage immigration Warren and Sanders want to decriminalize illegal border crossings while the moderates argue that that would only encourage more people to do the same right now if you want to come into the country you should at least ring the doorbell now tonight the front-runner and former Vice President Joe Biden will be taking center stage and by his side will be senator Kamala Harris setting up a rematch after they're feisty first debate in Miami and this time Sandra Joe Biden says he's not going to be quite as polite Sandra we look forward to that Kristen Fisher thank you see how it goes then meanwhile another story developing now President Trump taking a victory lap over a federal judge's decision to throw at a lawsuit that the DNC members the Trump campaign hacked over committee documents the president tweeting in part the judge said the DNC case was entirely divorced from the facts yet another complete total and complete vindication exoneration from the Russian WikiLeaks another form of hoax perpetrated by the DNC radical Democrats and others the witch hunt ends there it is Jonathan Swan national political Board of ratios sir welcome back great to see you so many of these cases are finding themselves in dead ends and here is another example of that Jonathan this there's a reason we had we didn't hear much about this DNC case in the news media it never really had a particularly strong foundation and that's very clear in the ruling the DNC never alleged that any of the Trump people on the sub campaign had a role in the hacking of these materials so then it became a question of the First Amendment to that right to talk about it publicize promote alright so you wonder what's sticking collusion doesn't stick the Michael Cohen case against stormy Daniels in its dick and now this is well let's talk about last night here's the president c-span talking about the Democratic field watch here I would think the four or five top ones would seem to have a big edge you have some people that shouldn't even be wasting time but I would think the four or five top ones would be the ones that would be you know certainly have the best chance of getting in your sense Jonathan from watching The West Wing how much attention he's paying to this it would appear to be a lot but yeah he definitely pays a lot of attention to it he talks to his aides about it a lot he often makes phone calls what did you think of this it's what he does with anything but you know he pays attention I'd be surprised if he I don't know for a fact if he watched the full debate I'd be surprised if he did he probably was flicking back and forth but don't look Donald Trump is always looking at these candidates looking for weaknesses ways that he can brand them for the general election mmm you know what struck me last night did you watch the pregame they had about a 45-minute pregame that was unseeing idea how much the core of the Democratic Party despises Donald Trump that there was 40 minutes of anybody but Donald Trump and that was what I took from that that's definitely true but I think what we also saw on the stage yesterday was the hunger for the the left the leftist policies that Elizabeth Warren and Sanders pushing and they were the ones who really excited the crowd these big structural changes Medicare for all and you know when you saw the moderates like John Delaney tried to go up against them I mean Warren was almost sort of gleeful in the way that she was dealing with it she at one point she rubbed her hands together and sort of seemed to almost lick her lips at the prospect of applying her wealth tax to John Delaney sixty-five million dollar fortune and that was really what excited the crowd so you know you could talk about what's gonna happen in a general election but that's where the energy is in this primary campaign Brad Park out run in the Trump campaign 2020 tweeted this during the debate last night Democrats are fighting to take away private insurance tax you for then convince you that the government will give you better coverage so health care of the Democrats win lines waiting for care and a plummet new doctors lastly taxes for the middle class a skyrocket I would expect him to hear more from that but that strategy you mentioned about moderates trying to take down the progressives and the progresses fighting back what is Joe Biden do with that tonight well the only the only thing that matters from either of these two I don't think anything changed last night I don't think any of the fundamental dynamics changed last night the only thing that matters is if Joe Biden can shake off the rust tonight and have a good performance because people forget he still is the front-runner you know that we we ballyhooed the moment with Kamala Harris when she you know tore him apart on on segregation and she did get a bit of a boost in the polls she's actually dropped down a little bit since then but Biden hasn't really been affected he's still the front-runner and if he has a really strong performance tonight yeah if he has a really strong performance tonight that that's just the undeniable reality just one more thing Lara Trump was almost Andrew last night and she said they would prefer taking on Joe Biden is is that a commonly held thought I can't speak for Lara Trump whether she's being completely genuine there but I could say a lot of the other ones who were just looking at their internal polling would not share that view they would much rather run against Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren interesting it's great to have you back Thank You Jonathan spank you being with us out of Axios in Washington next our brand new reaction here on America's newsroom the DNC communications director Sochi in a hole so she is our headliner today we got a lot of questions for her coming up as well Marit go ahead no I'm listening Marianne Williamson maybe everybody said blows up the Internet what does that mean a blowout a lot of reaction not a lot of react to this watch here you got a lot of it that's right the hamsters are running the wheel around our that's about to come out now gli it had no album it's one of those days or teased ugly it's really ready they said it's really ready roll it this walking this is going to deal with this dark psychic force of the collectivized hatred that this president is bringing up in this country then I'm afraid that the Democrats are going to see some very dark days mm-hmm dark psychic force big question is why there wasn't a bigger discussion having a debate in Detroit why there was it a bigger discussion about the problems there a great question and the economy – I think some dark psychic forces are working against us today so it's gonna be an interesting three hours standby stay with us California putting a target on the Trump campaign saying if the president wants his name on the ballot there he's got to do one thing all we're requiring is people that aspire to be presidents not about one person they have to disclose their tax returns Trump's legal team is now fighting back we're going to tell you how plus there is this watching the US Senate today we expect to vote on a major spending bill want to bring in Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy serves on Judiciary Committee a lot of other things senator how you doing and good mom well yeah I can go back home and explain to folks that you're that you're not cutting and you just continue to spend and we're just adding more to that big massive pile we've already built up how you do that senator well I'm not going to have to because I'm voting no look here's what I've learned in three years about the budget bill everybody around this place Democrat and Republican says we need to spend less but it's like going to heaven everybody wants to go to heaven nobody's quite ready to take the trip and so when it comes time to make a change to reduce the spending they don't want to hear about it last year in the Appropriations Committee I offered an amendment to delay the pay raises for our 2.2 million federal employees I said we can't afford it right now they're 30-plus members of the committee I got votes and and only one Republican voted with me the rest of you pose despite that it read on it and I hear the invocation make him but despite that it's going to pass today yeah probably but how do you break the cycle if ever well it's real simple you just do it the Office of Management and Budget sent over hundreds of suggestions on which I think many Republicans and Democrats could agree to reduce spending consolidation of programs economies of scale stop giving consultant contracts at the IRS to consultants that Oh back taxes duh and none of those suggestions were even considered and that's why I'm voting against the bill I'm not saying everything in the bill is bad I like the part about it good stuff yeah I mean good stuff in there for the military listen there's another hot topic up there because Democrats are hammering John Radcliffe and I don't know if this is real or if it is something that they maybe they don't know him well enough you don't know him I don't know him I'm looking look my feeling is that a president whomever the president is is entitled to surround himself or herself with the advisors that they feel comfortable with but my job is to advise and consent and I don't know mr. Radcliffe I've read the news articles about him but I want to get to know him and I want to do some research in his back hair the play for you is as Chuck Schumer just went off yesterday saying it wasn't qualified watch here he is so partisan and he has believed in so many conspiracy theories that he's exactly the wrong person to handle DNI you need someone to speak truth to power you need someone to tell the president if you do this there's a danger of war or a danger of Americans being killed and Ratcliffe has shown no inclination to speak truth to power now there are Republicans have already run a rack closed defense he has been on eating edge of looking at the investigators of the investigation for all the whole Trump campaign show just a quick answer on that as to how are you think this is gonna go well with respect to Senator Schumer you have to consider the source I suspect mr. Radcliffe will be confirmed I just like to know more about people that whose vote I'm I'm being asked to give before I make them okay or I got that what did you think of last night did you spend any time watching the Democrats to beg it in Detroit what did you think sir well I'm not buying the storyline of progressives versus moderates I would remind you that the the lesser of two socialists is still a socialist and what I heard last night even from the so-called less liberal candidates and I'm not imputing their integrity but even from the less liberal candidates I heard a job-killing soul-crushing socialist agenda the only thing missing was the Cuban national anthem same old stuff socialism illegal immigration abortion socialized medicine or moral Goods free enterprise border security sanctity of life you're on the job health insurance those are all moral Bad's and at the rate my Democratic friends are going the American people are going to have a very stark choice building this election it's going to be growth versus redistribution it's gonna be do you believe in more freedom or more free stuff and my Democratic friends want to pay for that more free stuff out of your bank account yeah it's it's gonna be interesting and we got a long way to go too by the way and all likelihood Democrats will take this nomination all the way there convention in Milwaukee Wisconsin Center I got a run I don't know how it played in Havana strong kid now the White House vowing a legal fight after California's governor signed a bill that would require President Trump to release five years of his tax returns to secure a spot on the state primary ballot California with an obligation of the federal government's not going to act California needs to act Cristina Coleman is live in Los Angeles with more on what's happening here hey Kristina hi Sandra well California's Liberal Democratic governor is known for criticizing President Trump now Newsom is launching another political attack on Trump by indicating that the President may be trying to hide damaging information by not releasing his tax returns the law will require candidates to submit their tax returns to the California Secretary of State at least 98 days before the primary which will be held on March 3rd of next year supporters of the measure say they have the right to know the president's financial dealings all we're requiring is people that aspire to be President it's not about one person they have to disclose their tax returns just issues of self dealing conflicts of interest requiring that regardless of political party you choose to do the right thing you could choose not to do the right thing the Republican National Committee does not require candidates to appear on primary ballots in all 50 states but even without a legal fight Trump could get around this and avoid the tax release requirements by choosing not to compete in California's primary one of the president's attorneys saying quote California's attempt to circumvent the Constitution will be answered in court and a trump campaign official said in a statement the Constitution is clear on the qualifications for someone to serve as president and States cannot add additional requirements on their own what's next five years of health records the US Supreme Court has stopped state efforts to add ballot access rules for congressional candidates before so we'll have to see how this plays out so here we go big day to watch the markets 9:31 now quick check now as we wait the Federal Reserve's decision whether or not to cut interest rates over the first time in a decade soar up a little bit there Smitty you have to remind yourself of that it's been a while yeah I I can't believe they have not they haven't cut an interest rate in ten years this is the law seems like there going up and down economic recovery on record the president has made it very clear he's not pleased with the actions of the Federal Reserve he thinks that they have actually stunted growth he's calling you heard him yesterday when he's leaving for Virginia let's see a large cut he suggested it's anticipated that it'll be a quarter point so we'll see all right okay we can go down the road that senator Sanders and Senator Warren want to take us with is with bad policies like Medicare for all or we can nominate someone with new ideas to create universal health care for every American I am talking about and others up here are talking about is no deductibles and no co-payments and Jake your question is a Republican talking point where the Democrats we are not about trying to take away health care from anyone using Republican talking points are you also quote with Bernie on Medicare for all when it comes to raising taxes on middle-class Americans the patient corporations and billionaires are going to pay more middle class families are going to pay less Wow the biggest issue for Democrats is health care and the candidates that last night's debate were deeply divided on the issue liberals and moderates clashing over how to make it affordable and available to all Americans but largely avoiding the question of how to pay for it or laugher joins us now former economics advisor to President Reagan arkad good morning to you so did any of the candidates on that stage last night answer the question how do you pay for this well you don't pay for it that's why they don't answer it I mean it's a silly silly proposal I mean something like 19% of the US economy is health care and you're gonna give it away free to everyone without any co-pays without anything it makes no sense whatsoever Sandra and it'll be a catastrophe for the US economy Delaney at least pointed that out the critic but then he goes and proposes not quite as bad a plan as the others but you know there were a few there that made some sensible remarks but what I'd love to have you do and rude sometimes is have a whole lineup of the former democratic economists that if they're and have them give their comments I hope they would stick with their economic principles rather than be political acts but you know economists can think of those proposals as making any sense whatsoever some economists have already reacted and said it's really hard to to dig through the numbers and figure out what this would ultimately cost or save anyone because there's very few details offered what Elizabeth Warren said was costs will go up for billionaires and corporations those are her words for middle-class families costs total costs will go down Jake Tapper asked Bernie Sanders you saw at the end of that byte he asked do you support raising taxes in the middle class to pay for medic Medicare for all he didn't answer the question he said that that's a Republican talking point they're gonna be fundraising no question he said yeah was Jake Tapper's good and you know it's not a Republican talking point is called an economic talking point and maybe that's because the Republicans are the only ones looking at economics seriously they also want to get rid of the 2017 tax bill I mean how crazy are they they want to stop economic growth and cause poverty despair but that's what they did it was very entertaining and i thought in bernie sanders with his arms waving and his I wrote that bill it's very funny and very interesting it's not good politics they tackle that tonight because the big question is if your health care costs go down and taxes have to go up how much how much will people end up spending in total on health care and they really have to dig into that because that's what people want to know now to the Democratic a lot of people Sandra go ahead yeah a lot a lot of people aren't gonna get health care if they do that they're just gonna be rationed just like they are in Canada and Britain they're gonna be rationed so long enough to wait twenty eight weeks to get to see a doctor and that's not what anyone wants alright now to the candidates on the green New Deal and how that came up last night watch climate crisis is the existential crisis for our world it puts every living thing on this planet at risk science tells us we have 12 years before we reach the horizon of catastrophe when it comes to our climate we need every country working together if we're gonna really deal with climate change in a realistic way we can create and what the green new deal is about it's a bold idea you heard Buddha judge there and I believe O'Rourke said something similar science telling us we have 12 years before we reach this has a lot of concern from here to Korea good morning everybody I'm Bill Hemmer live here in New York City how you doing sandy I'm Sandra Smith good morning South Korea confirming the
