THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A FUN EVENT FOR PEOPLE TAKING A FLIGHT ON A WORLD WAR TWO-VINTAGE AIRCRAFT. AND IN A MATTER OF MOMENTS, IT TURNED INTO TERRIBLE TRAGEDY FOR MANY FAMILIES. WE NOW KNOW SEVEN PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN THIS MORNING’S CRASH TODAY’S FLIGHT OF A B-17 “FLYING FORTRESS” WAS PART OF THE “WINGS OF FREEDOM” TOUR. 10 PASSENGERS HAD PAID TO TAKE THIS FLIGHT. THERE WERE 3 CREW MEMBERS. 1 WORKER WAS INJURED ON THE GROUND WHEN THE PLANE CRASHED. THE B-17 ALERTED AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL THAT THEY WERE HAVING A PROBLEM WITHIN MINUTES OF TAKEOFF. THE PLANE WAS IN THE AIR FOR ONLY MINUTES BEFORE THEY TURNED BACK TO ATTEMPT TO LAND AT BRADLEY. MULTIPLE AGENCIES ARE INVOLVED IN THE INVESTIGATION. JAMES ROVELLA, COMMISSIONER THE FBI IS HERE NTSB, THE FAA IS ON SCENE, HOMELAND SECURITY IS ON SCENE. THE CONNECTITCUT STATE POLICE WILL BE ASSISTING NTSB WITH CRASH RECONSTRUSTION AND DATA AS MUCH AS WE CAN OFFER ASSISTANCE ON. SYDNEY: THE AIRPORT WAS CLOSED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE CRASH. NO FLIGHTS COULD COME IN OR OUT BRADLEY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT… UNTIL 1 RUNWAY RE-OPENED AT 1:30 THIS AFTERNOON WITH JUST ONE RUNWAY OPERATING, AND THIS MORNING’S CLOSURE, THERE ARE MULTIPLE CANCELLATIONS AND DELAYS. CIARA: 22NEWS REPORTER HAYLEY CROMBLEHOLME TELLS US WHAT THE HOSPITAL IS SAYING ABOUT THE CONDITIONS OF THE SURVIVORS HAYLEY CROMBLEHOLME: OF THE 14 PEOPLE HURT IN THE CRASH, HARTFORD HOSPITAL RECEIVED SIX SURVIVORS, INCLUDING 3 IN CRITICAL CONDITION THE HOSPITAL SAID THEY WERE WERE NOTIFIED BY MEDICAL EMERGENCY DISPATCH ABOUT THE CRASH, AND IMMEDIATELY LAUNCHED INTO THEIR MASS CASUALTY PROTOCOL, CALLING IN ALL AVAILABLE TRAUMA SURGEONS AND OPENING UP OPERATING ROOMS. IN ADDITION TO THE THREE PATIENTS IN CRITICAL CONDITION, THE HOSPITAL RECEIVED 2 PEOPLE WHO SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES AND ONE PERSON WITH MINIMAL TRAUMA. DOCTORS COULDN’T GIVE SPECIFICS ON THE PATIENTS’ INJURIES, BUT SPOKE GENERALLY ABOUT WHAT KIND OF TRAUMA A CRASH LIKE THIS CAN CAUSE, INCLUDING BURNS, BROKEN BONES AND INTERNAL INJURIES. THE HOSPITAL SAID THEY HAD NO IDEA HOW MANY PATIENTS TO EXPECT, AND PREPARED WELL OVER 100 MEMBERS OF THEIR STAFF “WE NOTIFIED EMERGENCY MEDICINE, TRAUMA SURGERY, THE ORS, THE BLOOD BANK, NERUSURGERY, THE BLOODBANK. WE NOTIFIED OUR COLLEAGUES AT BOTH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AND THE BONE AND JOINT INSTITUTE WE HAD PLENTY OF ORS ON HOLD READY TO GO, EACH WITH A TEAM READY TO TAKE A PATIENT” HAYLEY : WE KNOW THAT TWO VICTIMS SUFFERED BURNS. ONCE STABILIZED, THEY WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO A BURN UNIT AT A HOSPITAL IN BRIDGEPORT HARTFORD HOSPITAL SAID THEY BELIEVE THERE MAY BE MORE PATIENTS BEING TREATED AT OTHER HOSPITALS. AS OF THIS AFTERNOON, THE HOSPITAL SAID THEY WERE STILL WORKING TO NOTIFY FAMILY MEMBERS OF THOSE THEY WERE TREATING. IN EAST GRANBY, CONNECTICUT, HAYLEY CROMBLEHOLME, 22NEWS. CIARA: MANY PEOPLE HEARD ABOUT THE CRASH AS THEY WERE DRIVING TO THE AIRPORT, BUT DECIDED TO KEEP GOING, IN HOPES THAT THEIR FLIGHT WOULDN’T BE CANCELED.
